Actually, The Parting Glass has been around in Ireland since at least the 17th century or even earlier. It was the traditional song to sing at the end of a gathering of family and friends before it was succeeded by Robert Burns' "Auld Lang Syne"...

One of my dad's best friends posted this song on Facebook a while back following a firefighter tragedy. The song instantly made me think of my dad, who passed away at 7:17am on Christmas morning 2012 from cancer. I felt apart. This song speaks metaphorically to so many levels. I feel absolutely blessed to have found such a beautiful composition.
After I began playing this song for him, my little boy, Declan, requests this song almost every night before he goes to sleep. He just turned 2, and he knows almost the entire song. Warms my heart.

from WiKi - "The Parting Glass" is a Scottish traditional song, often sung at the end of a gathering of friends. It was purportedly the most popular parting song sung in Scotland before Robert Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne".[1] The song is also popular in Ireland and amongst Irish communities.

    • @helenaville5939

Probably because the Irish took their culture to Scotland and it thrived. The two Celtic nations of Scotland and Ireland share much in common culturally with endless cross-overs down the centuries.

I know one day he wont be able to cut wood or have a drink with me and when that day comes, I'm going to cry because I won't be able to work with him, watch Comanche Moon with him or drink with him... but when that day does come, this will play and I'll raise my glass and drink for the both of us. Alas, it was to none but me
And all I've done, for want of wit
To memory now, I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night, and joy be to you all
So fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health, whate'er befalls
Then gently rise, and softly call
"Good night, and joy be to you all"
Of all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But since it fell unto my lot
That I should rise, and you should not
I'll gently rise, and softly call
"Good night, and joy be to you all"
Fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health, whate'er befalls
Then gently rise, and softly call
"Good night, and joy be to you all"
But since it fell unto my lot
That I should rise, and you should not
I'll gently rise, and softly call
"Good night, and joy be to you all"
So fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health, whate'er befalls
Then gently rise, and softly call
"Good night, and joy be to you all"
Good night, and joy be to you all

Thank you very much for this amazing song. I knew it from a movie where is played from another artist, but is so expressive and hopefully that I love to listen to it in various version. For me, an italian woman, is beautiful for his origin that make it universal. Good life to all!

The Irish do indeed have some magnificent songs - but this is NOT one of them - this is a Scottish song from the early 17th century 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I'm not even Irish, I'm Italian/American, my in-laws are Indian/Dutch, we played this loud at new years just after midnight. I never heard it before. We were all swaying and singing with our drinks. The music swelled and the bagpipes came in, I couldn't hold it in any longer, I started crying tears of joy. I'll remember that moment in good company for a long time!
