    Cool video Jonny, thanks for sharing. I use my phone tuner app and also my guitar tuner. They come in very handy when you are not sure of the key you flute is.

    Great video, Jonny! Now you can catch those unscrupulous and shoddy flute makers who claim that their poorly tuned flute is just "not tuned to a Western scale..." as an excuse. If your flute seems out of tune, but you just don't know how it is out of tune... In addition to the phone app you feature on this video, you can just use an electronic tuner.

    Cool video, but you didn't explain how to determine what key the flute is in. You indicated that your root note is G, yet did not proceed to demonstrate how you know the key. :}

      Good point! On a modern Native American flute, the root note, the fundamental is the key. Most flute makers will mark the flute somewhere on the flute body too, as an indicator, maybe even just inside the barrel of the flute at the foot.

      When you hold all 6 fingers down, that is the key the flute is in. On the app, the note registering when all 6 holes are closed is the key of the flute.

    Two questions …. Totally unrelated to this although I am going to compare your tuner to the one I have….. BUT…. 1) Any chance you’ll be at Native Rhythms 2022 in November? And 2) your flute racks … where did you find those?? And those look like metal … are they? And do I remember correctly that you also have acrylic ones? And if so, those can be found where???

    Hey Jonny! Good video..... I do have a question though on the recommendation of following your Chromatic Scale chart to help find the key of a flute that may be in question. Doesn't that chart assume that the flute is more of a Modern NAS Flute? If we have a flute that doesn't match note for note... it could very well be tuned to a different scale (Diatonic, mode 2/5, and what I'll just call "Exotic Tuning" flutes), or given some of the flutes made by Butch Hall (some older ones required different fingering is what I had read somewhere) or the Amon Olorin Flutes by Ken Light need different fingerings on the octave note don't they? Granted... I haven't sat down and studied your chart extensively, but it doesn't work for two flutes I tried that were "a little different", but not tuned incorrectly.

      That is absolutely correct, Brent! Thanks for pointing that out. Alternate tunings, exotic tunings have their own progression of notes specific to those scales or just the flute itself, and the Chromatic Scale Chart that I offer is for the common modern NAF in the pentatonic minor scale. That being said, there are alternate fingerings offered on the chart for when the usual fingering does not fit a given flute. That is where the beauty comes in, especially on those upper register notes. There are several alternate fingerings to which need to be tested. This is a good way to be sure that a flute is not written off as a "bad" flute. Just works a bit differently. I tell my students to "know" their flutes and I offer sheets for documenting those unusual flutes so that they can be played with modern music.
