Hello I'm an extreme novice to any musical instrument. My heritage is Cherokee but many years ago. I'm part of a ministry called The House of David in our area. This past month, I was at our service and a lady there walked over to me and she placed one of these flutes into my hand. She said she had been carrying it for 22 years waiting for God to show her who it belonged to. She placed it into my hands and said The Holy Spirit will teach you how to play this. I'm so thankful that I have found your videos. I hope I can contact you for help when I'm ready to start playing. God Bless

👍 Hi Clint - I have two Native American flutes. Unlike my concert flute, fife flute and to a certain degree my pan flute, the Native American flute is very easy to play, and requires very little if any embouchure. And one can make up tunes as he or she goes along.

My flute sounded the very same as yours did, but I have that dreaded whislting sounds from time to time, but guess that is just practise, practise and practise some more! I wish I could come to your get togethers but I think you are at the East Coast and West Coast, and I in the middle, there are now gatherings in my area, I've checked, but I will keep listening to your videos!

Getting out of a "rut" is one of the up-sides to new techniques. Also ... finding a new rhythm and playing a new scale are great paths out of a rut ...

These really are great videos, and you are a great teacher. You mentioned that we should not play the flute for more than 15 minutes, but I can't afford more than 1 flute, so that won't give me much time to practice or play. I would need 4 flutes to play an hour?
You might consider an inexpensive plastic flute as a practice flute. Northern Spirit A minor flutes might suit your needs ... they can be purchased assembled or as a kit (even less expensive).
Hello Clint. I am thinking about learning how to play the Quena Flute. Could you recommend a good quality Flute.I am 83 years old and love the sound of this flute particularly the middle and lower mellow tones.Tried the B Flat clarinet but found it too hard.Thank you

Great video, glad I've found your channel. I've always loved these flutes, but have never learned to play. Would you have any advice on where to buy your first flute from? There are so many on the web that without advice, you never know what you are going to get. HighSpirits Flutes by Odell Borg looks very promising, but I'm not sure. I'm not a rich person, but I also don't want to skimp on tonal quality. I'm working on building a couple of different flutes using a 3D printer, but I really need a well made instrument to learn on and to gauge my building success by. What key/frequency should a beginner look for in their flute? I am looking to purchase and I am not sure what key to get it in, or what frequency to have it tuned too! Any help would be super appreciated!
We find that most people can reach a mid-range A minor flute, so that might be a good place to start. If you find that is comfortable and you are looking for slightly more "mellow" tones, then move down to a G minor or F# minor. If you have really large hands / long fingers, you might find an E minor flute comfortable.

@@RunnerThinHey, not sure if you have a flute already. Just noticed that you never got an answer from anyone. I would suggest an A or G flute. It’s still easy to cover the fingerholes but its tone is fuller and lower than a C tuned flute, basically a nice midrange flute. There are some fabulous flute sellers on Etsy with good prices for their instruments, that suit beginner and novice alike. After playing for a while you‘ll probably want another flute. Usually deeper or higher tuned than what you already have, just to experience and play around with it. And for that purpose I would suggest buying a reasonable priced flute on Etsy again. Only then I‘ld buy a flute in the key that truly speaks to your heart and is from a well known flute maker - e.g. spirit flutes.
Hi Clint, Quick questioin, you say only play for approx 15 minutes a day, if I practice for longer will I ruin my flute? 15 mins a day is nowhere near enough, I want to play for hours lol I suppose the only answer is have an arsenal of flutes, but unfortunatly wallet strings wont allow more than one.
It does depend somewhat on the construction and finish of the flute - the key is how moisture-resistant the instrument is. I find that swallowing before I play also helps reduce moisture. However, at some point you are risking expansion of the wood and a possible crack if you play too long. Most players have a number of flutes and switch off while playing to keep within these time limits.
Other than "one hole", what's the difference between a 5 hole and 6 hole flute, AND, what is the most popular key? New subscriber thanks you in advance!

We have found that virtually all adult players can reach the finger holes on a A flute ... you could also check out our video called "The Best Key Flute" on one way to find the key of flute that best suits you: ua-cam.com/video/j1u6eBuxXns/v-deo.html
Keeping your finger over the 3rd hole from the top (from the end you breathe into) is an excellent way to get started. However, after you learn the basic scale, using that third hole (i.e. picking up that finger) will pay dividends later on by adding more pitches (notes) to your repertoire. Flute On!
I brought a native American flute about 6 months ago. I practice playing it often, but I can not get a good clear note on the top hole. Holes are completely covered. Tried breathing hard, easy and medium. It just sounds bad. Could I have gotten a bad flute?
Major differences! The shak is an "edge blown" flute, which means the player has to create an "embouchure" with their lips to create a tone on the flute - and that is challenging. With Native American flutes, you just breathe into the end of the instrument. Shakuhachis have a much wider range (because the player can adjust the embouchure) than Native American flutes. And Native American flutes are "two chambered" instruments while shaks have a single chamber. I hope this helps!

Then transition to tying the sound with the breath. It take a while to build up that connection, but just sitting and noodling (i.e. "playing" as a child plays) builds that connection. It did for me, anyway ... This is not a quick learn, but I think it's at the heart of what we do ...

Check out the Belo Cozad recordings on UA-cam or on Flutopedia.com. That's a good sample. Most recordings are under lock and key because of cultural restrictions. A very few are available. There is a catalog on Flutopedia.com ... Kudos for looking for the real source material and happy hunting!

Kate Annabella check out a site called High Spirits Flutes, I found their market on a trip in Sedona, never played an instrument but liked the look and sound of his flutes and they are so nice and simple to sound great with. They are as low as 70$
The simple answer is to play it just like a six-hole ... i.e. don't pick up the third finger from the top (the ring finger on your upper hand). When playing the primary scale on these instruments, you always keep that finger down anyway. As you get more advance, there *are* fingerings where you *do* pick up that third finger from the top ... and in those cases there are substitute fingerings on a five-hole flute ... but that's for later ...
@@ClintGoss thanks for your reply! My five hole flute has two holes for the top hand and three for the bottom hand-so do I keep the ring finger on the top hand down or the pointer finger of the bottom hand? Or maybe I am holding my flute incorrectly 😂

We think the best thing is to go to a festival that has a lot of flute makers. At the end of the day, it's the sound of the flute and the playability, and you can't really get that long distance - you have to try them out. You could also visit some makers in your area or go to a flute circle that may have some makers or other players that have lots of flutes. Failing that, I might start with a large, reputable outfit - they may not create individualized custom flutes, but the larger outfits tend to be able to produce a line of flutes where every one is reliable and well-tuned ... I hope this helps!!

There is a bit of echo from the two walls to my left and right - they are parallel walls and do produce a bit of a "slap" echo - typical for a room effect. The sound is also EQ'ed and processed cleaned up in post production.

Are the plastic native American flutes any good compared to wood? A lot easier to wash out a waterproof plastic flute?
There are *some* plastic flutes that sound great! The ABS Food-grade plastic ones are washable ...
When I retire I will buy a big bag of weed and a nice flute and just enjoy my days.

Why is it not a good idea 💡 not to play one flute more than 15 min at a time ?
The moisture that accumulates in the first ("slow air") chamber can cause the wood to swell and eventually (potentially) cause a crack to form.

I notice my flute dont have any holes at the bottom ( what you call the 4 directional holes ) will this affect the sound quality of my flute/
The direction holes are not that important for the player ... they are more of a convenience for the flute maker when tuning the flute ...

If this is your very first flute, I suggest you check Jonny Lipford Music. He carries a couple of lines of good beginner flutes.

I have COPD. ..can I still play my flutes?

@@ClintGoss thanks for your reply! My five hole flute has two holes for the top hand and three for the bottom hand-so do I keep the ring finger on the top hand down or the pointer finger of the bottom hand? Or maybe I am holding my flute incorrectly 😂

Where do you recommend buying a flute
We think the best thing is to go to a festival that has a lot of flute makers. At the end of the day, it's the sound of the flute and the playability, and you can't really get that long distance - you have to try them out. You could also visit some makers in your area or go to a flute circle that may have some makers or other players that have lots of flutes. Failing that, I might start with a large, reputable outfit - they may not create individualized custom flutes, but the larger outfits tend to be able to produce a line of flutes where every one is reliable and well-tuned ... I hope this helps!!

Are you echoing the flute sound from the mic?
There is a bit of echo from the two walls to my left and right - they are parallel walls and do produce a bit of a "slap" echo - typical for a room effect. The sound is also EQ'ed and processed cleaned up in post production.
