Good God. They're breading!! That's a beauty. I have always wanted to get one of these from the Lionel postwar but they are still too expensive. Nice addition.
Congratulations Ray on your new EP-5!! It’s a beauty. Just an F.Y.I. for you. On older MTH Trains with PS-1, they utilized a NiCad 9volt style battery (Actually it’s a 7.2 Rechargeable) inside the locomotive that was needed for the sounds. You’ll have to open up your locomotive and replace that battery with a new one. And even though this locomotive is a NEW locomotive, those older rechargeable batteries don’t last that long and will not hold a charge anymore. When you replace the battery, you should be able to get all of the sounds it originally came with. I hope this helps you. Keep us posted and let us know how you made out! Tom
I'd advise replaceing the battery with a BCR, I've done it with all my MTH PS-1 and -2 engines and have never had a problem with them. Not cheap but money well-spent. One thing, some of the older MTH engines may not have batteries in them at all, the only way to know for sure is to take off the shell if it's a diesel or open up the tender if it's steam.
A fine aquisition Ray, that's one good looking engine! I did a little research for you and found that MTH RailKing EP-5 30-2170-0 dates from 1999. Let me tell you, for a 25 year old engine that thing looks damn good! I suspect it's had very little run time. The " -0 " RailKing EP-5 is really the "no-frills" version with just the electronic horn. I suspect it's strictly a conventional runner, it's got QSI electronics and the MTH webiste said nothing about it being DCS capable so I wouldn't assume it is. Hopefully you've got the owners manual that came with it which should explain the specifics. Any way you look at it it's a great find, especially for someone like yourself who's got first-hand memories of Metro-North engines with that wild McGinnis New Haven paint scheme. Thanks for posting!
@@RaysTrains I'm planning on it Ray! I'll be driving up Thursday the 17th and MAY hit one of the halls depending on when I get there and IF I'm not burned out by the drive. The movie "Dr. Doolittle" had a double ended Llama called "Pushmepullyou". That could have been the nick name for this engine. Nice "rig" I dig the details. Thanks for sharing Ray. This is Scale Rail Ray heading back to my corner of the Round house...
Ray I have a question. What size fasttrack switches are you using by the Coal Country building? Just wondering since I have a similar setup, and I don’t have a lot of room. Seems like whatever size you are using would work on my layout. Thanks, joe
Cool locomotive, Ray. To me, the Rail King line is a perfect size for almost all layouts. I don’t care to run the big, scale stuff on my layout, really. It’s just too big for most layouts, unless you’re Jason or Chris Montagna. As far as which way you run your trains, I’ve never paid any attention to it. Your videos are fine, just the way they are. Either way, you can’t go wrong with New Haven stuff. It always looks good on any layout. I’m looking forward to catching up with you at York. An excellent video, as always.
I have to second you on the "too big for most layouts" observation. I had a RailKing N&W Y6b I sold last year because even though it was a RailKing engine it really was too big for my layout. Not that it didn't run on it, it just looked ridiculous so I hardly ever used it. So I'm staying away from articulateds until the day ever comes when I can do a larger layout.
Nice engine, Ray. I had a similar experience buying my first and only Rail King set. I bought the Rock Island E8s. I thought they contained PS1 as it indicated that it was optionally equipped with this as per the description on the box. This is just another reason I haven't bought another MTH model. Besides their higher costs, there's just too many little iffy, risky things that can go wrong with their electrical systems, like Is the battery or BCR good or charged blowing out the boards if there not, and does it have the 3 volt vs. the 5 volt systems and on and on. It's just too much for me to think about when all I want to do is run trains. It's just as well because I run conventional anyway, but I thought I would have all the PS1 sounds. My E8s have that same crappy sounding horn. Apparently, the description just lets you know it can be upgraded to PS1 sounds, but the catalog number that ends in 0 is for the crappy sounding horn only. In the end, we probably dodged the bullet as the PS1 equipped engines are probably the most likely to have compromised electronics, yet still, in my opinion, are overpriced. I'll be sticking with my ultra reliable Marx, Lionel, Williams, and K-line models. Oh, and my one set of conventional Rail King E8s with the crappy sounding horn. They are super nice-looking and running engines.
It's like you're slowly changing into an MTH guy Ray! That engine is cool, very much like the lionel post war version, that lionel post war version also let you convert it to work off the panagraphs. BTW running engines in the same direction is cool too, leads to some great shots as they come around parallel curves together in sync.
As a kid I used to think NH was for New Hampshire, which is where I lived when I was a kid. Found out our state doesn’t have its own railroad. Nor do New Haven lines go into New Hampshire lol mostly Massachusetts 😅
Nice NH electomotive engine way to make a guy jealous 😅 now ur going to have to string some over head lines have fun 👍 guess ur not a adams family fan u might b to young to get that train safty joke if so sory
Congrats on the EP-5 Jet! Unfortunately all the originals are now razor blades 😢 The MTH EP-5 is still my favorite O gauge engine. Your engine is the budget version with only a horn, it does not have protosounds. But for longevity that may be a good thing. As you have found they are great performers and sharp lookers.
I think you need a 12 step program. I would be happy to sponsor you. Our first meetings can be at Gryzboszkies. Spelling those eastern names is tough. Lotsa consonants.
The joys of filming for videos. I feel ya Ray. I try to keep it interesting thinking of new angles.

Nice One Ray! It looks just as handsome as the Lionel 2350. The horn is pretty basic but I have no complaints about it at all.
I just looked at my classic toy train magazine and I see the ep5 locomotive 377 from classic tot train magazine was September 2000 .
