I blew through like 6 Zappa albums at work and holy shit I’ve been doing myself a disservice by not listening to him more sooner. Maybe I just wasn’t ready but god this guy was a different level of genius.
Zappa explains the meaning behind Call Any Vegetable in Absolutely Free: "The best clue to this song might lie in the fact that people who are inactive in a society ... people who do not live up to their responsibilities are vegetables. I feel that these people, even if they are inactive, apathetic or unconcerned at this point, can be motivated toward a more useful sort of existence. I believe that if you call any vegetable it will respond to you."
+Ame Elia TRUE yet his tunes seemed to complement the "getting high" experience even if it wasn't his intention. But then so did certain Disney animated films and we know Walt was not pro-drug. ☺
Ame Elia ~> TRUE! I remember all the folks getting stoned when going to see theatrical re-release of Disney's Fantasia in late 1960s/early 1970s hyped as "The Ultimate Trip" though I'm sure Disney never meant it that way and never would've approved of that hype. But then there were the twits who'd debate/discuss the "deep" meanings of Simon and Garfunkle lyrics. OMG were they ever annoying. ♣

He was the H.L. Mencken of rock music. There will never be anything like him again.
Keep listening. You've barely gotten started.
Back in the 70s after hearing this I was never the same
I listened to this all the time in high school. No wonder I'm so deranged!
Nice video.
I too devoured the early MOI in the late 1960s.

They kicked me outta high school just because of this tune!

A prune isn't really a vegetable. A cabbage is a vegetable.
Why is a vegetable something to hide?
Yodeling vegetables! 1:08

Always liked Zappa. My cat named Vegetable (Verdu) walked by and I thought of the song.
Sounds like an advertisement for vegetables
The impacted fecal matters measurably less or equally lacks an image visually yet in solid state becomes replete with veggies.

Dat potato. Is it a heart? Is it a butt? Conundrum!
Its a potato
It says ' five minutes ago', but it took me five months to communicate so incoherently-.
I like it, good footage, and also, I'm a green grocer
Love Zappa vegetables!
this is not a song about vegetables - its about fruits
Happy Mothers Day
Its really a strange phenomenon that lead me to this song.
Coincidence maybe I guess. But I never really believed in chance.
Oh and I love prunes
electric prunes =]
And Frank Zappa needs explicit content put on his records... pfft...
I think I know where this build was going and howww could it be cut out from me like this :(
Best early Frank
I can yodel "rutabega" in English OR in Esperanto ("braskiknapo").
Vegetables for world power!
Call the vegetable but ask it something, what is the question?
Absurd
In the good way
why is a vegetable something to hide?
Depends on where you're hiding it?
rutabaga
Tomatoes aren't a vegetable. And an artichoke isn'y a cabbage and seashells ore not cool abrupt endings, in case you have ever gone body boarding.
I have always thought of Frank Zappa as children's music for drug users.
abstractheory Frank Zappa was against drug use and was very vocal about it.... you thought wrong

WytZox1 those are your perceptions not mine or zappa's....

usmc7242 ~> Zappa gave no "2nd chance" to any band member who was ever too stoned to perform. They'd just be replaced. ☺
it is about "hiding the vegetable" where ? lol no vegetables here, only iron sausage
I find this really disturbing and way too personal, this should never have been released and must be muted or removed right away.
By the way my real name is Waters, Roger "The Wall" Waters.
Noise Ninja ha!ha! good one NINJA! why is a vegetable something to hide?
Never. Vegetables need to be called upon.
Noise Ninja
Yeah, well, just wait 'til the Duke of Prunes hears about this blasphemy...
