That's a neat project. I recall making one similar when I was in Scouts many, many years ago. If I remember correctly we used them to drill through the framing for a canoe to run the lacing for attaching the outside covering. Thanks for the video and for jogging the memory.
Great to see a video where some one makes something , to many bushcrafter's just coping each other and making tarp shelters or duck tape tarp - plastic tents like the forts we made as kids out of junk and sometimes dad's good stuff that was meant for other things. Haven't seen any one make one since the guy from primitive technology did one years ago.
I just watched the version of Primitive Technology channel's on this today. Was wondering about it from more of a modern bushcraft version and you answered. Mind reader.
Pump drills are very cool. We us them with National Park Service school walks. The 4th graders get to use pump drills to make a hole in an abalone shell to wear as a necklace. The kids love using them (after the slight learning curve). The local Native American's (Chumash) used them once they were (sadly) brought into the missions. They were definitely not used by Native Americans here prior to the arrival of the Europeans, who brought over the pump drills. Your take on the build is very nice, I will have to try that out. We have much thinner and wider flywheels on ours, more like a "personal pizza" in size and shape.
I like your wedding-ring tattoo. A very practical replacement for a ring, which could get caught in some of the machinery you operate...and a very permanent declaration! Some might not think it's romantic (because "--tattoo! le gasp!") but I think it's wonderful.
Handy old school tool. I wonder if you notched the end to make it similar to a drill chuck and lashed it you could change the drilling tip for larger or smaller tips.
Dave, I know you are a huge advocate of tarp shelters, what would you recommend for sheltering when in the south west deserts? There are scorpions, tarantulas, and lots of other critters I’m nervous of open air sheltering around, thanks.
you dont need to drill any holes. You can just split small logs and cut a tunnel down the sides of the splits, or you an use two sticks, and cut notches on the outsides of two small logs, used as your counterweights.
Hey Dave. Big fan since Dual Survival...please tell me...how did you become such a master expert at bushcraft? Are you self taught or did someone teach you? It blows my mind your sheer knowledge of so much man. It is nothing short of astounding.
So the pumping action pulls on and thereby unwinds the cord wrapped around and held over the back end of the rod. It’s converting linear to rotary motion
You wind the string that is attached to the crossbar around the shaft. As it winds it becomes shorter and raises the crossbar up the shaft. When you push the crossbar down, it pulls the string and spins the shaft as it unwinds. At the bottom of the stroke the momentum will keep it spinning and wind in the oposite direction. He then releases pressure ast the string winds again. The wide cylender piece acts as a fly wheele.
I really cannot see the purpose of this but the rest your videos are doing damn good. I noticed you cooking over gas a lot now instead of fire like survival mode?
The purpose is teaching simple machines I have video on this same device making fire. I don’t cook on wood much because it’s not renewable quickly and I use fires EVERY DAY wouldn’t be long and I would have no material for the future or for students at my school
That little hold fast is awesome!

The original cordless drill, love it! Love that hold fast too.

Dave, I've been studying your field guide to Trapping, Gathering and Cooking. It is fantastic. Thank you
Fun build.
Good to see Zahn supervising.

That's a neat project, but I'm more interested in your little hold-fast. Did you make that, or buy it somewhere?
New item from our forge will be for sale soon on our site

The ring of the metal at the end was the icing on the cake.
Looks like a handy tool !!! Nicely done! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🔪🪓👍👍

LOVE the “old Dave” type videos.

You didn't really show how you achieved the rotation and the focus was on your arm when implementing the use.
Seems like a lot of work to accomplish what you accomplished at 2:40 with your swiss army knife. 🤷♂️ Still useful applications I'm sure.
It will start fires as well with a bit change I have past videos on this so it is multifunctional and teaches a simple machine
Thanks Dave. I think it'd be wise for me to take this course before my advance survival course. This one or Land Nav intensive (or both someday).
Or more honestly
Hi Dave !! What are those metal things that hold wood ?? Can I get them from somewhere ?? Thanks !

What is that cleat your using to hold the pieces down while you work on them haven’t seen that before.
New item from the forge coming to SRO soon
Nice vid. Ive seen your cooking vids that you drink ski. I live in IL and ski is made in Breeze IL too. FYI.
I'll definitely try to start a fire with it.
Thank you.
That's pretty cool ,I remember you made one something like that to start a fire .
Where did you get that hand auger?
Do you sell them ?
Dave, a little explanation would help as well as you assembled the drill.
Could this be used as a fire drill too? Looks superior to a bow drill but i am not sure if it produces enough pressure against the fire board.
you would just hbave to change out he nail spindle and pot in a solid wood one and yes you will make fire
Have a video in my catalog
I must have missed something, but I can't figure out what makes it spin.

Great project
Awesome video
Gotta link for that vice apparatuse or will i have to make it? What did you use to flatten the nail? I use a piece of forklift fork.
New Forge shop prototype. Making 100 sets for sale now
Great video
So if you replace the nail, drill bit, with a stick of wood, could it work as a fire drill?
Have a video on that exact thing
Do you guys sell that angle iron with pin to clamp wood down? I didn’t see at SRO web page
Soon we are forging 100 sets right now
Hey Dave what's the multi tool model you used here please?
Dave I guess I’m too stupid. I have no idea what you did and why . And the “hold tool” never saw that before. 🤷🏻♀️
💖💖🎉🎉
Thanks Dave
Very NICE👍
That’s cool brother!
i was thinking fire drill myself that hold fast is more interesting though!!!
Nailed it!
Also why in the heck am i the only person commenting? This stuff is gold.
Nice
Ok Dave, I want to know about that holdfast!?
Coming out soon
NICE!!

Dave, as always... excellent, useful content!
I'm surprised Zahn's interested in this project since there's no food involved.
Thank you
I don’t get the purpose of the nail, a drillbit yes but I nail ?
Improvisation of common items
These videos would just not be the same without the cat.
That thing will beat the hell out of an egg...
do you sell the scotch eyes and the small log dog?
The scotch eyes yes log dogs coming
Kitty! 😻
i don't understand how everybody pushes silky saws but all of you's use Bahco Laplander
I use Bachos for Craft work and Silky for Firewood
I need written instructions with diagrams. 😆
Or you could come to a course?
There's the cat.
