  • Neon Genesis Evangelion pulls from many different sources and one of the biggest influences on the series is classic tokusatsu like Ultraman. Let's look at the show in a tokusatsu light and see what it has to offer.

      That's actually Matsumoto Hitoshi, one of the greatest japanese comedians and he himself a big fan of Ultraman. He even directed and starred in the movie Big Man Japan, itself a tribute to tokusatsu and kaiju movies.

    Anno's depictions of the background activity of NERV and civilian casualties with Evangelion, and how he wants to shift Shin Ultraman's focus onto the Defense Forces feels very much in line with his political disaster/satire of Shin Godzilla. Keeping the worlds of his projects grounded in their human errors.

    • @KKAkuoku
      @KKAkuoku 2 роки тому +1

      That’s honestly what I hope to see from Shin. I honestly never felt that in any previous attempt to “ground” or Ultraman (Nexus, The Next, the Marvel comics), rather they just aesthetically “mature” the Defense Force while keeping a lot of the trope-y nature from the past.
      I’d be happy if Anno and Higuchi explored the minutiae of monster attack force in Shin; it would go a long way to make a reimagining of Ultraman more believable.

    • @_GeneralMechanics_
      @_GeneralMechanics_ 2 роки тому

      @@KKAkuoku He's really grounding it into being a part of the larger defense force that seems like it's a department that likely doesn't have the support or importance it deserves that will eventually *become* something like the SSSP. I wouldn't be surprised though if like in "Shin Godzilla" he's making a political statement about Japan's military, parodying the United States' kind of spending going to waste when their best defense against alien threats is a guy with the Beta Capsule.

    While not my favorite, I’ve come to appreciate Ierul as despite not being the most flashy Angel, it’s honestly one of the most efficient Angels. Also imagine if Ierul took over Jet Alone? How would that go?

    6:11. The actresses for Rei and Asuka are these background characters.
    A quirk of the original performance; some of the seiyuu played extras throughout. Most dubs did not have this problem, but this utilitarian approach in performance is just interesting to know about.

    I'm not sure I have a favorite angel, but do you know what an evangelion looks like without it's armor?
    The angel it resembles the most would be Sachiel, the first angel in order of appearance, with it's humanoid body plan and massively exaggerated shoulders and tiny waist.
    Intentional or not, this feels like some powerful foreshadowing for many revelations later in the series.
    The best bit of lore would have to be the evidence suggesting that Kaworu took on the appearance of Misato's father because he injected his own DNA into Adam for similar reasons; it creates a powerful resonance between different parts of the story.

    Favorite and best Angel has to be Ramiel. It's appearance is so unexpected, different, and incredibly powerful. It throws any preconceptions about what these things are and what they can do out the window. An entire episode is devoted to defeating it, and NERV has to channel massive resources into its destruction, only barely doing so. Then it's "corpse" looms over Tokyo for episodes thereafter

    Great video man! Zeruel and Lilth God Rei were definitely my favorites. Zeruel was a powerhouse and God Rei was beautiful but terrifying at the same time. One of my favorite story developments was finding out that the Evas are living flesh beings cloned from the angels. I remember being so invested with the story that I binged it all in like 2 days way back in 2008 lol

    Eva definitely borrows heavily from Tokusatsu, but the concept of giant monster vs giant robot is that of classic 70s super robot anime shows à la Mazinger Z. In Mazinger you have doctor Hell's mechanical monsters attacking Tokyo, and the Photon Power Laboratory sending their robots from the underground to protect the city; in Eva you have Nerv's Evangelion fighting the Angels in Neo-Tokyo-3. Anno said in a discussion with Yutaka Yuzubuchi that the original intent for the series was that of making a modern version of classic super robots. Of course, he also took inspiration from many other works, especially Tokusatsu, and then turned the series into something else.

    About the Angels: they're actually called "shito" in Japanese, which translates to "Apostles". Many things in the world of Eva that are called differently in Japanese than they are in their English counterpart, which adds a sense of mystery. Part of that is lost in translation, as the linguistic dualism is taken away in most localizations of the series.

    • @Blunovain
      @Blunovain  2 роки тому

      Correct. Though allegedly it was an Anno/Gainax decision to use "angels" for English translations.

    • @frankjaeger2565
      @frankjaeger2565 2 роки тому

      @@Blunovain yes, that was explained in the old commentary to the first episode of the series in its first American dvd edition. There seems to be no such request from Gainax for other localizations, yet the "shito" are called "angels" in every other language, as far as I know. The only version which kept the linguistic dualism of the series was the first Netflix Italian dub; too bad that localizion was god awful for a plethora of reasons, forcing Netflix to remake the dub, but that's a story for another day.

    Evangelion is likely one of my favorite if not the favorite media ever (although it fiercely fights that spot with Dorohedoro), for many of the reasons mentioned here, I see it less as an anime and more as an animated tokusatsu
    As for favorite Angel, it gotta be the two major game changers: Ramiel and Zeruel
    Ramiel effortlessly shows that Angels can look like literally anything, be unassuming even, while still being incredibly deadly and unpredictable in how they perform, something that is later escalated with Leilel, Armisael and Tabris; it also helps that Ramiel is almost successful in its mission to reach "Adam"
    Zeruel in a way follows in the steps of Ramiel, being the second most successful in its main goal and mission, but bringing back the mindless brutality of the likes of Sachiel or Bardiel, but amped up to eleven, not to mention that its attack also leads to one of the most striking, shivering and absurd moments of the TV series

    I decided to rewatch the whole series before I finally go into the fourth Rebuild film, got to episode 3 as you upload this. Sure it is a giant monster show! What really is the difference between a giant robot show and a giant monster show? A giant robot can fight a giant monster or a different giant robot. Maybe I'm oversimplifying things but to me the point seems redundant. Not saying its a bad video - some of the best things in life are redundant! I can't really get tired of discussing Evangelion.

  • @mrhypnagogia

    My take on the specific narrative sctructural action part of evangelion: every battle is short. Which makes every action taken by the opponents very important and with high stakes but also: every fight is unique. What is needed for each enemy is different each time. Sometimes more based on the tropes of giant robots and dai kaijus (specially on the first episodes) and more experimental in other instances. This is for me a very classy aspect of the show. Like a gourmet restaurant giving each taste its own moment and space.

      Yes, Evangelion is primarily a psychological case study, but just like the religious symbolism, just because the monsters aren't the point doesn't mean the production crew half assed it. They put a ton of effort into the monsters-of-the-week, and I like pretending Eva is just a "really good giant monster mecha" so that the spiral in the second half of the series is a surprise for new people.
