Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Review: The Best Note?

- I think it's fair to say that I've had a Galaxy Note in my Pocket for the past 10 years. Fine, 9 if we were to consider that I laughed at the first one, but you know you did too. It was hard to even consider such a large phone, at a time when one-handed use dominated smartphone design.. And yet, have you noticed how that quickly faded away after?
Thing is, ever since Generation 2, and even through the fiery times of the Galaxy Note 7, this lineup quickly went from mockery, to the one product I would always go back to, regardless of what phone I was reviewing. I know for some, the appeal of this phone was its size and for others the endurance, but for me it was actually what it could do. See, even if stylus input wasn't new, most companies got it all wrong before the Note. For Palm and Pocket PC it was all about navigation, while Samsung followed on WACOM's ideal of a pen that could either blend with existing content, or help you create it.
Now, what's ironic is that this isn't a video about a Galaxy Note. Sadly it seems that lineup is officially dead. Samsung has spent a good deal of time exporting its Note DNA to its other assets, all while turning a different phone into a more powerful Note. This is the Galaxy S22 Ultra, what Samsung calls a Note-Worthy new look, and what I'm gonna call my favorite Galaxy Note Ever, but for reasons that really contradict its purpose. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and let me explain why in our full review.

When I first laid my eyes on the OG Note in person my jaw dropped. I had a Note 5 and an 8 both great phones. My S22 Ultra though is by far Samsung's greatest phone to date!
I could never bring myself to get a Galaxy Note and always stuck with the S series simply because the Note always launched much later in the year after the S series with the same chipset, only to be followed by a new generation S series with a newer chipset several months later. But now that Samsung launched the newest "Note" as the S22 Ultra with the newest chipset, I finally took the jump! The S22 Ultra is my first "Note" ever, and I am totally in love with it!

S series is the most shittiest smartphone series ever built by Samsung and not making it a Note is just an excuse to keep that shit alive the only thing good about the S series is cameras and that's it.... S series must be discontinued

Last Note was Note 4. I'm loving the S22 Ultra. It's snappier and more stable than my S21 Ultra and the squared off edges are a true joy for viewing content vs the rounded ones from last year that felt I was watching movies on a jellybean.
The edges are one of the many reasons I'm considering it. This design doesn't trigger my OCD as with all others the radii of screen and body are different.
Yeah, first time watching a video on the s22u was a wow moment after years with s10+. I wouldn't mind watching a movie on it.
What about the s21 ultra was unstable. I haven't had any issues

@@timothyxxxpaul heck yeah glad yours is a smooth operator. Just had issues with visual voicemail, wifi calling, switching apps, and scrolling Reddit or news feed would stutter. The S22 Ultra is just snappier but the S21 Ultra is still a beast of a phone

I do wish we had better video quality like on iPhones as you mention, but otherwise it's great! Battery life has also indeed gotten better for me too.
How are the speakers and vibration motor ?

Ive had a note 4, Galaxy s10e and currently the Note 20 U. I'm not going to 'need' to upgrade for at least another year, if not more. However I'm on the fence on whether to go for a 'note' phone or a fold phone when I finally do.
I think it will all come down to the options available at the time, however if I were to upgrade right now, at this stage in foldable development, I'd have to go the s22 ultra.

I don't know if it's just me, but I'm not sure I can use a phone that's not a note anymore. As simple as it looks or seem, having the pen inside, waiting to be used anytime is one thing I think about whenever I consider using other none Note phones. Maybe the foldables will succeed the Note for me one day. And this is coming from someone that started with the Note 20 Ultra. What about those that started way back?
Back in the day I had the LG V20 and after not being satisfied with future V30 I switched to Samsung and got the Note 9 in dark blue. That phone was a beast in its day but with one short coming. It had just 2 cameras and neither was the wide angle lens which the V20 did have. Sammy followed Apple and Google and went with a Telephoto lens. Both of which were dealt the ire of their fan bases. Somehow Samsung didn't get the heat like Apple and Google did but Sammy was taking notes. I sat out the Note 10 line even though it added the wide angle but when the Note 20 Ultra 5G showed up I pre-ordered and traded the Note 9. The Note 20U5G was dominant except the cameras didn't live up to the hype. The 100x zoom was unusable and you could not use the Wide angle or Telephoto lenses in video mode. I use the cameras quite a bit and it just missed hitting my expectations. When the S21U came out and the touted Note like features I was disappointed that it was simply a clunky case swap with tacked on Pen to get Note like features. Samsung finally got their act together and gave us the S22 Ultra and traded up the Note 20 U5G. The pre-order was great. Snapdragon 8, S-Pen, 512G memory, fixed cameras and $200 in credits and I walked away paying $400 out of pocket. Very pleased with the performance and cameras. The one thing it lacks that would truly make it the Note heir is the uSD card slot and a headphone jack... but technically its not a Note so all is forgiven until the Fold Note 1 comes out and then it's preorder trade-in time again. A bigger screen would make it easier to use the S-Pen. Don't disappoint me Sammy. Upgrade the Z-Fold with S-Pen silo, add the S21U cameras and throw in the micro SD card and I will upgrade.

The thin handheld slab is already a mature form factor now and it doesn't make any sense to trade more profitable product category, like cars, for this (we have tried getting those, but failed to do so). You will, however, keep getting those arcade cabinets, home computers and miniature forms of arcades, that don't use Intel and arm technologies. Investors should be looking for new form factors that change the way people interact with technology rather than wanting to have other companies replicate what successful companies have done in the past. It's simply not possible to do that. If you want to make Intel PCs or ARM smartphones, invest in companies that already have the necessary permissions to use the technologies developed by those companies. At the same time we're always open to providing chips to companies that come up with their own form factors.
I have always the same question: WHY SMARTPHONES MUST HAVE CAMERAS?!

Hi, Recently bought this Beast & I'm facing this weird camera issue, When clicked with 3× times optical portrait, the face looks slightly fatty & when clicked with single zoom face looks slightly thin & vertically stretched, visible when compared side by side.
Other issue is display colors are less saturated & not color pop out when compared to 3 time cheaper devices like ONEPLUS, POCO F3 GT & Moto G82,
Tried Vivid mode & all but there's no other option to tweak the more saturation.
Let me know if there's any solution for camera issue.
I would definitely own the s22 ultra if i didn't already have the s21 Ultra. I hope they will continue with this line. I might get the s24-25 Ultra 😜 hopefully we will have a complete AMD chip and a monster lens worthy of picture taking.

The software technology and feautures used with the Spen on a note can not be replicated with just a galaxy s22+ with some random stylus that's a fact

Pretty happy this time as we get Snapdragon version in India. I think I could keep my phone this time for atleast 2 years without any hiccups.

@@Robin007George we have got the early update. It's working absolutely like beast as if now.. Good gaming, good battery, great camera performance and no heating issues.
A good deal considering the processor. Exynos ones kindof got 'tired' after the warranty ran out.

That's exactly what I did. I got the note 20 ultra and 2 years later I traded it for the S22 Ultra. Very happy with this phone as well. It far excels the note 20 ultra in my opinion.
Being someone who doesn't mind putting an eight-inch tablet along my face to make phone calls, no, I didn't laugh at the first Galaxy Note. I just hate that Samsung didn't sell the Galaxy Tab Active 3 in my country. That would have been my primary smartphone.

Me too especially that SD card expansion I had a feeling they would remove it from future note ish devices and they did im glad the A series still has it though that does confuse me that they don't fit it in the premium line

Yes, two things I used to love about Samsung phones were the replaceable battery and SD card slot. They really shake you down for every last dollar they can get from you these days.
The only change that the S22 Ultra needs is a Flat display as using the S-Pen on the Curved display is often cumbersome.

I'm looking to upgrade my phone and I've been torn between the S22 Ultra and Pixel 6/6 Pro. Interestingly, this has also made me realize that, at least here in the states, there are only 3 real options for smartphones now: Apple, Samsung, and Google. Really starting to feel the absence of LG and I'm sad at what OnePlus has started to become. Hopefully Nothing puts out a phone in the same spirit as those early OnePlus days.
I'll let you know the true difference between the 6P and S22U. I have the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6 and have the S22 Ultra on order. I absolutely love everything about the Pixel regardless of all of the BOGUS reviews.
@@juvonycool awesome! I'd love to hear your opinion later when your Ultra comes in. Yeah I've always been a fan of the Pixel lineup (Pixel 2 was one of my fav phones ever when it came out). I played with Pixel 6 and 6 Pro at Best Buy recently and the 6 was smooth and blazing fast while the 6 Pro was stuttering noticeably. Tried to replicate it in the 6 and couldn't. Granted they are floor models at a store but it did show kinda what some people were talking about. Regardless, I'm still leaning Pixel. Just haven't decided if telephoto is a must or not for me.
@@CodyDavisGuitar yes the floor models at BB or any store are usually slow and laggy. My wife and I bought the regular Pixel 6 and absolutely love them. I had no intentions of owning the 6 Pro bit was able to hey a basically new one for one 600 so I couldn't pass it up. If I'm being honest I wouldn't post the 300.00 for the 6 Pro over 6 but they're bit incredible phones. I'm trading a Fold 3 for the S22 Ultra but I honestly plan on using that phone as a backup to the Pixels. But you never know I may enjoy the S22U....

Exynos version is some cheap crap, phone lags so much, random freezes, overheating , throttling. 1200€ flagship Ultra with this horrible processor is just unacceptable, don't BUY this phone!!!
Great work as usual. Always love watching your content. The note line wasn’t any different from larger phones in S series, so it’s a good move by Samsung, imo. This phone does truly justify the Ultra naming for a phone.
Nope it's a total shit movie the S series should be discontinued and the Note series should live on...not as a shit merger..... S series is not even a Note worthy device.... note and S series were way different other than spen support
@@adithyansunil1153 they were different until the note5 and S6 Edge plus were released. From that point on the differences started to diminish. Since then the note series was jst a boxier S phone with s pen capability. That’s y it was a smart move frm Samsung to merge both. Also they need to focus more on foldables which r rlsd in the 2nd half of the year wch was previously dedicated for note series.
I have the S22 Ultra 256. The only thing I'm disappointed about is the speakers aren't as loud as the Note 20 Ultra or the S21 Ultra.

Commenting from S22 Ultra indian version which first time got snapdragon. Earlier S series and Note always got exynos processors here... which weren't that good in power, heat or even battery life. Pretty happy with s22 Ultra snapdragon. But only 512GB version is available in India (256gb is also available but). No 1TB version here. (I guess neither 128gb rom & 8gb ram version)
being a fan of Samsung phones here in America, it makes me happy to see your comment. on all these videos you'd always see the exynos complaints. sucks that some regions still have to get it, but at least you guys in India are finally getting snapdragon.

In india exynos experience was worst with my last samsung device (s9+)
Indian phones has dual sim and everyone normally use 2 sims. And if I'm travelling then exynos battery drains like I'm gaming... (only one sim with 4G data on and other with just 4g volte)... It was nightmare... keeping data on became sin 😅😅😅 whenever we travelled my phone was always remained plugged in car for charging literally relentlessly when i had s9+... that even affect battery life...
But one plus phones were good for power and battery both with snapdragon.
Yesterday almost whole day i travelled with new S22 Ultra... (morning 6 to evening 6) Even after using moderate gps, maps, messaging app, continuously connected with watch 4... it drained 75%... 20-25% was still remaining... (although while travelling i always keep sync off.)
That I never expected from Samsung...
It is almost like one plus and any other snapdragon device...
So the earlier samsung phones has only one issue which is exynos. Which cause all the battery heating, draining problems. 😪
I hope samsung will not use the exynos processors till they figure out how to make it like bionic chip... as own samsung chip, it should be more powerful and tweaked than snapdragon but it is completely opposite... the exynos is nightmare in every way...
No one clearly address this in exynos and snapdragon comparison...
3 things that got downgraded from Note 20 Ultra that is very unfortunate: 1. Expandable memory. 2. Much poorer speakers. 3. Dropped the ability to pay with credit cards using the slide function. (Don't remember the exact term.)
I have an iPhone 📱 but this is the phone that I can’t get over. I think 🤔 about it all the time. The Note is just the KING 👑 of phones. Damn I miss my Note 📝
It is an amazing phone. I picked up the 256gb version a few weeks ago and love it. I had the s20 and s21 ultra before that and this one wins hands down. I missed having the note series. I had owned several in the past and missed the experience and the Spen. I also have the tab s7 plus 256gb and they make an excellent pair for productivity and media consumption.

No matter what Samsung calls this phone, it's always going to be considered a NOTE......

hey if you see this after you got your s22 ultra, you think it's worth it? the trade in value is insane on my n20u. 850 bucks. plus my old s20+ which I found out can be added to trade in as well. 256 s22 ultra for 107 bucks. very tempting. just love my n20u and don't want to send it in, so interested in what you think.

Note line was on its way out after the Note 7 publicity disaster. Not a surprise they got rid of the note line. Might be why they jumped 10 generations in numbering their phones.. "The Note 7 was sooooo long ago. They're on 22 now."
@@sg7957 they didn't jump generation 😂 its the number of the year it's in. We are in the year 2022....... That's what the "21" (2021) & "22" is for (2022). Samsung is just being different, That I've grown to like from the master of a company doing different things.
But what do you buy if you liked the S20/S21 Ultra but disliked the Note 20 Ultra? Similar phones not the Note form factor REALLY isn't for everyone.

Galaxy Note 9 is Samsung's best Note ever. Imagine a Galaxy Note 9 FE with exactly same design and features (I don't mind the bezels) but 6.8-6.9 inches, with improved cameras especially the selfie, an ultrawide angle lense, 5000mah battery on Android 12 with OneUI 4.0-4.1 😍❤.

i have just got the note9 and my first snapdragon ever after years of being stuck to exynos in middle east.. u guys arent aware of what we have been debrived of.. i get 8 hrs of SOT and great performance!! i am a note exclusive user
I had the Note 9 and now I have the Note 20 Ultra and I loved the 9, but I love the Note 20 Ultra more! I don't agree that the 9 was the best.
It's the last note that came with expandable storage + headphone jack + no notch/hole punch all in one package....all gone in the next year's note

Thank you Jaime. Loved this video. This device is great. I have had no iOS withdraws, none whatsoever. The battery is the only thing that it's not so great. I came from an 11 Pro Max which was a battery champion. Thank God I work in an office and a charger is right there all the time.
The update that just dropped seems to greatly improved the battery life so far. Check for updates and hopefully it gets better

I was thinking of getting the Note 3 but I definitely had to get the Note 4..my first Note. One of the best phones ever made. What I labeled the s21 ultra too.
I never laughed at the size of the Note, because I first heard of it with the Note 2 which had a lot of reasons to justify the larger size, like the brand new multi window and the new features only with the S-Pen. I then went to the store to check out the Note 1 to see how it fit in my hand, because I wasn't sure how practical the size would be.
Now I must admit that I laughed my ass off when I heard about the size of the Samsung Mega

Galaxy Note was always a flagship model and the best of the best with all the bells and whistles .

Yes it has an S pen and squared off case , but in the last three years we have seen so many features and accessories too go missing from samsung devices , it is a joke.
I'm not going to list them all, but it's a lot , and no self respecting note would ever be sold without the full gamut of features and accessories that we no longer get !

if you are a long time serious real galaxy note person , you would have to agree this S22 Ultra imposter/bitsa/mongrel is not even close to a galaxy note even though it has parts of it.

What a nostalgic review. I've been on the Note train since the 4 (and only got once last year didn't have one and I switched the Z Fold 3). My Lowkey favorite feature that Sammie did away with was the removable battery. I used to love carrying that spare on me and switching out at 10%. I'd take that over fast charging any day of the week.
if only we could get back to removable batteries being standard.

I wanted a Note4 in early 2015 but it was so expensive and got an S5 instead. Loved it but 2 years ago I was like "It's time, this time all out" and got the 512GB Note9 which I love every day :) Don't like how every phone after it removes features yet costs more money. I for one prefer function over 'trend' or whatever. Just cuz others do it don't mean you should too, Samsung.

The #GalaxyS22Ultra is Fantastic, but very wide. So the ladies and people with small hands would have liked a regular Note form factor (vs the Note Ultra #BigDog). The simple discriminator is whether your are an Urban Warrior or living in a Grand Theft Auto Dystopian Hellscape. The Galaxy ZFold3 is best at home/office and on public transit, as a media powerhouse with S-Pen goodness. It is thick but narrow, so it is pocketable. You can't use a #ZFold3 in the car open using the main screen. The #GalaxyS22Ultra is also a media and productivity powerhouse with the S-Pen magic wand. It is great at home/office, in the wild, and in a car (major bonus #TheFastandTheFurious). But it is so wide, it might not be pocketable for all, unless you carry a (man) purse. Sammy gave us the best of both worlds, for which we are all grateful. #SamsungKnights
I wish this had expandable SD storage im glad I bought the note 20 ultra in 2021 since it still had that feature.

Personally I'd rather have a s22 ultra without the s-pen and s series styling. I had the note 8 and used it for a while, just not the person to use the stylist much. I got the s22+ for that reason. But hey, what do I know, im still asking Sammy to bring back the s active lineup
I remember watching you guys on Pocketnow when I got my very first Galaxy S with the hard aluminum back and you guys got me into tech. I kept my Note 8 with expandable storage through ATT while using most lately an unlocked S21 Ultra over wifi.
Just upgraded to the 22 Ultra and the word Phatblet started a slide reel of memories over the years going all the way back to Palm OS.

I feel that Samsung left behind the video optimization section.. I generally use the cameras only to take photos but for that price and a high-end model , video performance has to be much better! S7 Edge user btw :)

You have access to third party options thst give you deep control over the camera for video and produce some of the best video from a smartphone.

I love this channel and your insight! I think this phone has some shortcomings, but no phone will ever be perfect. This phone however checks all my boxes, will get better with updates, and because of that, it's perfect for ME. Maybe you're different, maybe you like Apple, that's cool, at the end of the day buy what YOU like because they all do the same things, just differently
ive always used a note i did try the fold 2 loved it but just not practical with 2 young boys however now debating selling my tab s4 my note 10 plus and getting the fold z3 and having 1 device what we think is better the ultra or the fold

Oh, Samsung and their rebranded Note. Face it, the last time we saw people rushing to Samsung stores was to return the twice recalled Note 7's before they exploded on them. So much for feeling nostalgic, as Samsung discontinued the Note because it tanked every year, just like their Galaxy S Series. 💯😂
What about fans of the S20/S21 Ultra? Samsung don't make a phone for these customers because the Note form factor REALLY isn't for everyone and the S22+ to cut down. I sent my S22 Ultra back, the form factor is so jarring. Now on the S21 Ultra, not against big phones.

Agree on the Exynos comments, I can't understand how samsung can get away with that bullshit of setting the same price for an inferior product, Exynos lags, camera is grainy and much worse even in zoom and the battery is non existent, horrible experience. Unfortunately majority of reviewers always praise because of Snapdragon but for real do not buy this phone for that momey if you are getting exynos. Don't do it.
In India new 45 watt Samsung EP- T4510 charger still not available.
Some Samsung retailers advised me to buy 25 watt charger instead of old 45 watt charger for S22 Ultra, because of less heat & better battery health. Is it true ? Or should I go with old 45 Watt charger ?

There will never be another true Galaxy Note if a successor like the S22 Ultra lacks a MicroSD card, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a removable battery.

So the question that was never addressed … did Samsung cancel the note lineup or do they cancel the Galaxy S lineup. Or does ultra mean S pen now. If I’m looking for a note I’m looking for an S pen 🤪 So without saying that there was a Battle. The galaxy S ultra lost before it put on the uniform

The removal of the headphone jack and SD card slot killed samsung for me completely. I was able to somehow put up with no headphone jack, but I'll never be able to have a phone without an SD card.

I am a note user. I have had the note 4 and the note 8. I am so happy I got s22 ultra. I am glad they combine the note and s series. The best note phone. Great Job samsung.

@Carl Gunderson how is note 20 better? The s22 ultra has better build quality (with gorilla glass Victus+ and armored aluminum), better battery life,better connectivity, a better display(way brighter, using lpto.2) a better s pen(reduced latency) significantly better processor significantly better cameras the only thing the note 20 Ultra has going for is subjective design and expandable storage.
