As long as you want ! I run mine 24/7 all summer never have a problem
Thanks for this. I live in Tampa Bay FL. My inground Pool gets lots of UV from direct sunlight. I run a Dolphin Robotic cleaner that has a fine particulate filter every night for about 1hour. I run my pool pump through the pool filter for 6 hours a day. Two chlorine tablets per week. No liquid chlorine ever. Maybe once a month a cup of baking soda. Strip numbers are always within tolerance - water crystal clear.
That's great, I see so many people on UA-cam telling people to run their pools at least 12 hours a day. Not with our electricity rates.

It's been so cool this month that I'm turning my customer's time clocks down a couple of hours now and a couple more by Thanksgiving.
I have an update to share.
Pool is 16×32 faces north/south has integral hottub, and an offset of stairs to walk down.
Have 2 chlorine floaters holding one 3" tablet each. Placed 1 in hottub other in pool.
Have a wall climbing robot pool cleaner, ran daily. The robot was cleaned weekly. I buy pool socks for the skimmer replaced weekly. I have a tall cartridge filter cleaned monthly.
I check my water daily, all numbers within parameters.
I ran my pool pump for 2 hours overnight (2 a.m.-4 a.m.) for all of this winter. That is all.
No yellow, crystal clear.
I think it is possible that improvements in chorine tablet effeciency + the robot turning up the water daily + load factor from the sun may be the reason for water quality vs pump hours.
Just my $0.02 but there may some old rules of thumb regarding pump hours being applied to systems where technology has impacted performance.
For the coming summer, I am interested to seeing if increasing pump hours from 2 to 5 will be sufficient or if a higher number will be required. i.e. what has always been done vs what is actually necessary.
Spent some time investigating the water chemistry of these systems. Think the main reason I am able to run such short pump hours is the robot.
The robot prevents the organics from accumulating as well as churns the water around and ensures uniform chlorine absorption.

Ridiculous- run 6 hours winter, 8 hours in summer. Without circulation yes it will turn green.
Not sure where you live Rick but when water temps get down to 52 F algae can't grow unless your chems are a mess. Make sure you get rid of phosphates and keep that conditioner closer to 50 rather than the 100 most pool guys like it to be. Add some enzymes on a regular basis and you can cut those hours down during the off season. I just try to save my clients money, here in Southern CA electricity is outrageous. I, almost never, get any algae in my pools.
