Same here. They did a good job thinning out the handles / grips on the underside almost to a triangular shape, where the ps4 controller handles are kind of fat and bulbous.
Oh dear lord, the 5200. I had one of those. My two favorite games were Joust and Moon Patrol. Those rubber buttons on the side were actually kinda hard to press and often didn't properly register a button press. Even on a brand new controller. For Moon Patrol it wasn't such a big deal but in Joust you had to constantly keep yourself afloat by pressing those buttons and it was just not that great. I'm surprised he didn't mention the extra functionality of the number pad, though. Some games would come with this thin, plastic overlay that you could put over the number pad. It had tabs on the top and bottom that allowed you to slip it into slots on the controller. I honestly can't remember any of the games that used it but I remember having them around. :)
Stop it. Just stop it. Also you may want to seek help if you have conversations with your brain like it's a separate part of you. Also also, that's not even kind of funny.
I quite agree Xbox one is the best controller out atm if i could make one change though it would be to duplicate LB and RB on the back of the grips for those who dont claw grip the controller
Great, comprehensive video. May I suggest another topic? How about a video on how control methods evolved through the years, basically how we started with the digital D-pad in the 2D platformer era and then went to using the left analog stick, how the right analog stick took its camera control function, how the action buttons such as fire, jump etc. migrated from the ABXY group to the shoulders/trigger, all that kind of gradual change?
Me too. I commented that one time before in another video, (specifically about how this dude says "iterative" or "iteration" and how he uses a long I sound), and he was just like "go look it up in the dictionary. That's totally how it's pronounced". I was just like "... Riiiiiight"
Very cool history of controllers! I enjoyed the video, thanks for putting this together! (Don't forget the Xbox elite controller with the under-mount paddles) Incoming Grammar Nazi: 13:55, 16:59 => iterative vs eyeterative 17:29 => ergonomic vs erganamic 19:24 => When something is countable, use "fewer" instead of "less". Less water. Fewer water molecules. e.g fewer buttons. 20:19 => "How far we've came" => "How far we've come"
The Steam Controller is the best controller for PC gaming IMO, the thing is, is a totally different design and use from a regular dual stick that as the video says hasn't change since the ps1 era, so you either adapt and learn how to use it and love it or you get frustrated on the learning experience and hate it.
I'm looking forward for Valve's knucles for VR. I think we will see a similar "controller war" for the VR space as there was one for consoles before and i hope companies start building on each others work.
Loved this vid. Glad to see the intellivision mentioned. I tell people about that as one I had played growing up and theres not a ton of people that remember it. What was cool (or I thought as a kid and do slightly now) is that the games had a plastic slip that would slip over the number pad to tell you what buttons to push. I heard ya mention memorizing button presses in there later and figured maybe some people didnt know that. Like if you wanted to play pitfall, ya slipped in a plastic slide over the keys and boom. Then its football, ya grab that slip and play. I havent thought to ask at my local old gaming store but I'm sure these plastic slips are mostly gone over the years. They tended to get holes eventually pretty easy after over play so I'm sure 30+ years itd be hard to find solid ones for the games lol great vid though, always like seeing these histories of gaming
My mind was blown when i had a Microsoft Sidewinder 2. It had force feedback, as well as having varying degrees of resistance. It only activated when you were holding it with an IR beam and Mechwarrior 3 supported it! Programmable buttons too.
The only thing I have to say about controllers now, is that I fully believe the Xbox1 controller is the most comfortable. I jumped to PS4 (blame the Micro-CEO), but I seriously miss that controller
I agree whole heartedly. I have both, prefer the Xbox control ever so slightly, and play the PS4 more because it has more and better games. Microsoft fucked themselves hard this generation before the console even came out. Still love the XboxOne, just not the selection of games for it.

*underrated. Keep
I'd say the Switch Pro controller is actually my fav now over the Dualshock
Same here. They did a good job thinning out the handles / grips on the underside almost to a triangular shape, where the ps4 controller handles are kind of fat and bulbous.
The Xbox is best Tho then nitendo
The Gaming Snake yeah you’ve got to give best controller to Xbox
I can never not see that cute little dog whenever I see a switch controller.
You didn't even mention the greatest controller ever made, the Switch pro controller.
Personal preference, mines XboneS controller is the best controller ever made.
No the Gamecube controller is the best controller ever made.
@@antihumor2231 that D stick was not that comfortable.
@@antihumor2231 we could have some of that design back...
Comfy - but it's lacking a few crucial things - especially for a "Pro" controller. Need analogue triggers, and a central Dpad pivot.

My brain:you are watching this
Stop it. Just stop it. Also you may want to seek help if you have conversations with your brain like it's a separate part of you. Also also, that's not even kind of funny.
Thank you Falcon. Vids like this are why I subbed
Microsoft: makes a new xbox elite controller with 4 new buttons
Nintendo: makes their swich a little bit smaller
Sony: hol up
Gameranx is the best gaming channel. I love their passion for gaming
Xbox one controller is hands down my favourite. Say what you want about the rest of the system, but its controllers are mint.
I quite agree Xbox one is the best controller out atm if i could make one change though it would be to duplicate LB and RB on the back of the grips for those who dont claw grip the controller
Bobis32 Commentary buttons are not symmetrical, no touchpad, no leds, fat.
I dont wanna be that guy but the way you pronounce iterative and ergonomic hurts my soul
(Don't forget the Xbox elite controller with the under-mount paddles)
Incoming Grammar Nazi:
13:55, 16:59 => iterative vs eyeterative
17:29 => ergonomic vs erganamic
19:24 => When something is countable, use "fewer" instead of "less". Less water. Fewer water molecules. e.g fewer buttons.
20:19 => "How far we've came" => "How far we've come"
20:20 "Where did you learn to fly?"
(See if you can figure out what I'm referencing)
Superman?
AVGN
@@chimpmonkey7240 Yup
Great overview--lots of detail and good background. I guess you've only ever seen "iterative" written? ;)
The Steam Controller is the best controller for PC gaming IMO, the thing is, is a totally different design and use from a regular dual stick that as the video says hasn't change since the ps1 era, so you either adapt and learn how to use it and love it or you get frustrated on the learning experience and hate it.
@@QuirkyKitsune Well, which one is better, the Steam controller or the Xbox One controller?
that was a real trip down memory lane for me falcon, thanks heaps!
I'm looking forward for Valve's knucles for VR. I think we will see a similar "controller war" for the VR space as there was one for consoles before and i hope companies start building on each others work.
all 3 controllers came from a common ancestor, they look the same but not really the same
2019: wirless Bluetooth controllers that can light up (xbox one)
1970s: numbers and a joystick with a wire.
2019: M$ spent over 300 millions of dollars developing the XBOX One controller
1970: it was made by a guy in his garage with 2 dollars
You forgot about the revolutionary Ouya! How dare you? :)
Tie Claro the Ouya was a piece of shit (no means 2 start a flame war, it actually was)
@@mrsoisauce9017 Still an interesting controller because it's rather contemporary.
Mr. SoiSauce it was a joke
Mr. SoiSauce damn that went right over your head
My mind was blown when i had a Microsoft Sidewinder 2. It had force feedback, as well as having varying degrees of resistance. It only activated when you were holding it with an IR beam and Mechwarrior 3 supported it! Programmable buttons too.
The way you pronounce "iterative" is infuriating, but this video is still great. Really though, don't say eye-ter-ive ever again.
Eyeraq, Aloominum. That's Americans for you ;)
I came to the comments for this reason. WTF is that pronunciation? I've never heard that till today.
I love what you guys do on this channel!! Thanks for all the great content!!👍👍
Still love the XboxOne, just not the selection of games for it.
i use DS4 on PC and its nice to see that more games start to add native support for DS4 controllers on PC
Who came here coz of the thumbnail?
Yoshi 1: do your taxes 2: I dare some to play dark souls on that
I aint gonna pay taxes
CONTROLLER MASHUP! ATTACK!
Me!
The SNES and XB360 are my two favorite controllers. There's something iconic about them that I can't put my finger on.
