I'm just hoping this doesn't wind up like X-Wing and Attack Wing, where you end up forced to buy a ship you don't want just to get one single upgrade/crew card you absolutely must have to stay competitive.
Expansions won't be sold by the single ship. They will be "Exploration Packs" of about 5 ships each, with a bunch of mission content. (Technically, ship singles will be sold, but they have stated that these will not have any exclusive content. It's just the bare minimum to field an additional ship of that class.)
At first, I wanted it to be Star Trek Armada, too. But it actually seems much more like its own type of game that brings in all the best bits of Star Trek. I'm super excited to get this on my table. LLAP!
This game looks great. The only thing i dont care for at first glance is the movement, but Armada and Xwing spoiled me for that. I cant wait for Klingon and Romulan ships to be released.
It would be nice if they did a pure combat specific version of it or a pure combat mode, as lets face it, that's what would get most wargamers into i. Of course many Star Trek fans would appreciate all the other trekkie elements as well. The models do look nice, I'd love to see the other factions, like the Romulans, Cardassians, Ferengi and especially the Klingons
Thanks for the video - this wasn’t what I expected in the game - like you I was thinking this was going to be an X-Wing reskin. This looks really thematic for Star Trek fans and the potential for narratives is seemingly unlimited and will get even better with future releases. Great overview of the game. Thank you!
I'm surprised you don't get the whole crew of the Enterprise. It's a core set that definitely makes you want to have more ships and factions to play. I hope it's fun.
Nice review. So excited to get my copy soon. I think it’s all about the expectations. If people are expecting Star Trek Armada, they may be disappointed. But if you come into it expecting a brand new experience then it should be awesome. Can’t wait to see what expansions they come out with!
Have they mentioned anything about Romulan inclusions? They're pretty iconic to the Dominion War period but I'm trying to imagine a D'deridex miniature that's in scale with that Galaxy and it'd be a box unto itself at that rate.
thanks for all the info you’ve putting out for the game! Really cool that you got to try it out with the designers. I’ve got high hopes for and look forward to seeing it on my table… BUT is there a street date yet???? Can’t even pre order on MM either.
I like the fleet makeup more then I expected too but they need some midsized ships for the Dominion and a wider variety of small and midsized ships for both sides IMO. I'm the kind of player who uses swarms of small or midsized ships for the main force of their fleets usually. Also I wonder why the Federation fleet is mostly ships from the TNG series, including one that was long antiquated when the Dominion War began, instead of using some of the ships introduced in the TNG movies? I would easily take a Steamrunner, Norway, or a Sabre over a Constellation and IMO they would make more sense. Honestly did we actually see any Constellations fighting during the on screen Dominion War battles? Edit: Wasn't the Hathaway decommissioned and stripped then reactivated just long enough for a war game before getting decommissioned again long before the Dominion War? (Season two or three of TNG) Also how can it take place during season two of DS9 if it includes the Defiant (Not reactivated until season three's premiere) and involves Starfleet fighting the Dominion when the first battle between the two factions didn't take place until the DS9 Season two finale?
There are plans to at least introduce Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians and supposedly the Bajoran. 3 potentially leaked names for expansions are _Honor and Glory_ , _Rising Tensions_ and _Scars of Occupation_
I loved Armada because it was fleet combat, which was a rarity in Trek. I appreciate your honest review because it looks like I'll be passing on this one, it's just not my flavour.
Great review! I've preordered my core set... I saw on their webpage that the first drop afterward is a solo Enterprise-D? Do you know what the logic behind that is, since it already comes in the core set and is unplayable without it? Would there be any point in getting it since we all will have it by default?
@@ThatBillmanGuy I'm hoping, in such a case, that they have some more "generic" flair to it - making the one in the core box the USS Odyssey would have been nice? They could have sold the Enterprise alone without packaging it in the core set. Painting and renaming the ship model is going to get interesting, otherwise.
I used to love playing Star Trek Attack Wing and then it just got to be too much playing the monthly encounters trying to get the chase ships or the colored bases or special dice, whatever they thought of next for WizKids to get another 100 bucks a month
By the time that big Dominion ship was introduced, Enterprise D had been destroyed for two years. So it being in this set makes no sense from a lore perspective. That said, still nice to have the super detailed miniature available. Thanks for taking the time to explain the game.
The lack of narrative play is what destroyed x-wing and Armad for me and my play group. This game may have those cool play elements where there is more to do than just blow up ships. But the play elements, movement and combat, seem awkward and wonky and and may be this games Achilles heel.
I don't know why by I've always had a thing for the Excelsior class. She's a big fat beautiful ship. I can't wait till they have one in game! I am excited to get this game. If the delivery date is accurate I should be holding my own Enterprise D in a day or two!!!!
I get the feeling this game is trying to blend the feels of TNG one-off mystery stories with the epic feels of DS9. I wonder if that might be too much to fit into one game. I really just want a Trek space combat game where I can field 6-12 starships for an all-out brawl, but I think they’re trying to draw in those TNG fans where epic space battles just didn’t really happen.
Those are infact still photos of the cast, which have been painted over to give them that look. I guess it technicslly qualifies as art. But is really more like tracing. Still looks nice. Very common thesedays for thumbnails as well, which is curious, might help best copyrights by being transformative.
I don’t want to be overly critical, but it seemed like in the demo play video you did with the designers the ships all just clumped together in one spot and didn’t really do much maneuvering afterwards. Do you think this was mostly due to the tutorial mission you were playing or will this be the norm?
I think that was more indicative of the combat aspect. Once you start shooting alot, you have less and less power available for movement - so that was the portion we spent much of that time on. The game as a whole is actually FAR more about movement, exploration, and diplomacy than I showed - but I also know that alot of my audience would want to see the combat - so that's what we focused that first video on.
I want to like this so much, but am intimidated by all the symbols and such. I could learn it, but will i ever be able to teach anyone enough to learn the game? Most encouraged about the Ferengi symbol, hopefully a ferengi expansion in the future!
No mention of Elim Garak? is he in the game? seems he would be great for covert diplomatic missions??? and does Sisko get God like powers in later expansions? So he can just totally Nerf the Dominion in a wormhole..lol
So even though he's an "outcast" in the show, Garak would still probably end up being included in a Cardassian expansion - probably a dual faction character though for sure.
Um, the Enterprise-D was destroyed within a couple months of contact with the Dominion. The war didn't start until well into the Sovereign-class -E's service.
What I don't understand is why no one is addressing the goose in the room... That these are just enlarged, reprints of Star Trek Attack Wing, which itself was a reprint of Micro Machines: Star Trek? Sure, they look great and I want them-but it's just repeating what they already made before. It's nothing new. Honestly I just recommend getting Attack Wing over this. 5:53 - That, may just be the dumbest tool I've seen in a boardgame.. 10:40 - This 'pad' looks interesting but, again. Eh.
These are not enlarged reprints of Attack Wing. And Attack Wing Ships were not reprints of Micro Machines. All three have distinctly different molds. There are numerous reproductions of Star Trek ships, from scale plastic models to die cast collectables, Hot Wheels and even Xmas ornaments. They are not all reprints of one another.
The core set mostly is. There is also a standalone Enterprise that has a metallic paint job, but it has no new game components. It's mostly just for collectors.
I really like what the game designers are trying to do, but there are things I am seeing that give me pause. They picked the biggest and smallest ships and put them in the same box which gaurantees you are going to have scale issues. Phaser range of 6" and scanning range of 2" when your ship is 7" shows you the scale compared to the table space is way, way off. It doesn't seem like engaging gameplay to pick the very best crew for a particular station. Seems like there is always a clear choice. The turning dial slotting into the base seems really fiddly and uneccessary. I am going to watch this closely. If they come out with a huge line of ships, I am in. I will just purchase medium and smaller and make it work because ships that large on a 36" playing space give almost no tactical maneuverability. On the plus side, that Constellation class would look awesome in my Attack Wing collection.
The movement tool is the only part of this that I'm not so impressed with. I'm guessing they needed to have something different to X-wing, Armada or Attack Wing to avoid IP issues
Can we get AMG to hand Armada over to wizkids? No interest in the star trek IP for a tabletop game really but if they can do prepainted ships let's get some more Armada
This Looks Like a REALLY Cool Game! I really want to Play it! But... I'm Going to be THAT Guy who says "Um Actually..." The Enterprise D Crashed Some time in Season 4 of DS9. Worf Comes and joins the Ds9 Crew and Sisco Conveys His sympathies for the Loss of the Enterprise. The Dominion War did not Start Until the End of Season 5 of Ds9.
This is set at the beginning of the “Cold War” period with the dominion which starts at the end of season 2 and ends when the dominion war starts properly at the end of season 5. The idea is chart the progress all the way through that period. “Dominion war is just a short hand way of covering that whole time period. During that time period you have other conflicts like the cardsssian/klingon war and the federation/Klingon war which they will cover too. In terms of of officers, at the moment word and Oberon are playing double duty. They are clearly representing their TNG versions by they can be used in the defiant etc if you want. They have said they plan on bringing out multiple versions of characters. Sisko is his goatee with hair mid season 3 commander version but they will definitely bring out a captain version when they get closer to that timeline.
So the thing about "Generations" is that there is, I believe, a discrepancy between the timeline of when the film actually released, vs when in the timeline those events take place. The Enterprise D was destroyed in 2271and DS9 launched in 2269, which puts them approx 2 years apart, which should make it around Season 2 - ish, but before Season 3?
Arthur C. Clarke said all of his sequel novels to 2001 took place in slightly different alternate universes, to explain the discrepancies between them. That was one author responsible for writing four novels with pretty small discrepancies between them, consider how much worse it is with teams of different writers, across hundreds of episodes and around a dozen films, often having little concern for consistency with previous works. There's pretty big discrepancies in all that, so I'd go with Clarke's excuse when dealing with Star Trek too.
Might not have been the D, but it was a Galaxy class starship that fought the first engagement with the Dominion in the season 2 finale of DS9. It’d be nice if these ships didn’t have the ship name on them but came with decals so you could customize each Federation ship in your collection.
I believe the developers said that down the road they were definitely going to create a system that focuses on combat, especially larger fleet based combats! Which is very appropriate for the Dominion war.
Am I the only person who's disappointed that they paired the box set up like this? Why the Enterprise-D vs. a Dominion cruiser? When did THAT ever happen on the show? It should have been Romulan ships. Dominion ships, while fitting opponents for the Defiant, would have worked better against Klingons in a "Blaze of Glory" expansion.
Well technically the first attack by the Dominion was against a Galaxy Class ship - so it's pretty accurate in terms of the class of ship. But they also knew they had to appeal to the widest majority of fans, so if you're going to make Star Trek, Picard and the Enterprise also had to be included.
@@GauntletGames-r5v i did and did not enjoy it. and it was just a spin off of the D&D attack wing game not a dedicated star trek ship combat game such as this.
@@xxbrkdwnxx I'm not sure how combat heavy this game will actually be. We shall see though. There is always Star Fleet Battles to lean back on for a real game devoted to it.

@ That’s what I had hoped when I got into Attack Wing, but then Armada came out with more advanced capital ship battles and I hoped for something like that in Trek. Attack Wing isn’t to scale - it’s super cringe to put the Defiant and Enterprise D models next to each other in that game because the scale is soooo bad. I loved that Armada has the shield facings and unique weapons per facing. I think Into the Unknown can bring a lot of this nuance to the table, but we’ll see when I get it on the table. I can’t wait!

Looks fantastic. Sadly i’m poor and it lost out to Halo Flashpoint for my hobby money this year. Fortunately Flashpoint turned out great.

I have a feeling that the rest of the Enterprise crew may come with a Sovereign in an Enterprise-E Expansion at some point.
Let's hope so! That's definitely an expansion I'd love for us to get.
Ooooh yes! @@Crabbok
👀
It looks cool but not at $149.99
wow, that movement tool and system looks abysmal.
This is too much crap!
Anybody remember when wizkids was just clix??
Not worth it to me, I just don't like the IP.
Could it have been made any more fidly?
never liked the saucer separation, the movement is ridiculous. So many better ways to do it. I like they finally got rid of stills for the pictures
i hope this can blow up like X-Wing. I'm far and away a bigger Trekkie than SW fan.
You never played Star Trek Attack Wing ? Three ships a wave, 30 something waves, endless prize ships.... You may have missed your golden chance.
What you want is Star Trek Attack Wing, with only a few (or no) cards per ship. That system could handle it well enough, the scale mostly fit that.
@@ajlynch123 Meant scale in regard to number of ships on the pitch and being manageable.
Tiny-prise was always fun to see next to Quark's Treasure and a Solar Sailor...
@ Oh yeah gotcha. You could definitely run tons of ships. I can’t wait to put the new ships next to my DS9 from Attack Wing
