I just started watching your videos and they are really helpful with the flash art I've been trying to put together. I haven't taped off an area for a background before. Looks good. I have always used coffee for a background. I threw salt all over the coffee while it was still wet and it created a really textured look. The shading video you put up was a big help as well. Thanks.

Cool yeah I'm saving some other tricks like the salt for future videos. No problem i want to make videos that are going to help point people in the right direction

When painting in acrylics, we often use taped areas to make crisp lines, and to help ensure no leaking under the tape happens, after it's laid out, we paint along the edge of the taped areas with clear gesso, which helps create a seal to prevent the leaks.
So, QOR (Golden) makes a watercolour ground that will transform just about any surface into something that you can paint on with watercolours. I am wondering if you couldn't try that ground along the edge of the tape to achieve a similar seal? The only difference is that it's white, so you need to do it before anything else, so your paint covers the ground instead of the other way 'round.
    Just a thought. :)

Hey man! Really nice works! Did you try to stain with just coffee? Also I used to mask with masking fluid and tape. Cya!

Do the watercolour inks dry permanent? Or do you have to worry about them mixing with the colours you paint over top?

Nice technique man, thank you for sharin'. I have a question, when you put your design over the background and paint it with watercolors... does the new layer of watercolors of the design blend with the background? I mean, how can i prevent that? I wanna paint it like you showed in the past video (putting water first and then the indian ink and then the watercolor) but when i put the water the background fades a bit...

Hey, Yeah i know what you mean with the background not being waterproof like. If you see this painting i did Tattoo Flash Watercolour Speed Painting Illustration Weirdo" Time Lapse i didn't seem to come across any problems using a light wash. I tend to make the full area I'm painting a little wet even if there was no colour in one part, this just can help prevent those watermarks you can get sometimes if you leave water to dry in a spot you can sometimes see the outline. Only other things failing that i can suggest is use indian inks for background this way they are waterproof or maybe try using coffee or tea for the background see how you like that. If you're looking for that brownish look you might prefer using tea or coffee (without milk haha) to stain the paper. I prefer just using the ph martins but you can always experiment and see what works best for you. Hope that helps.

What paper are you using here? I really struggle to get masking tape off without ripping/damaging the paper. Even when I blot it on material or something first to take a bit of the stick out of it. Can't believe how firmly you've pressed the tape down yet you can still peel it off with ease. Any advice? Thanks

I'm having trouble when removing the tape.... I'm using low tack and 300gsm paper... some of it comes off fine but I keep having it rip off the surface of the paper.... very frustrating! any tips /ideas anyone!?

+BowerBomB make sure it's painters masking tape. I use the orange one for automobile painting (my boyfriend works at a body shop and he gets it for free) but I've also tried the white and blue kind from home depot I have left over from a paint job and they all worked fine. The blue one was harder to keep down but with a good finger press like he showed worked out fine too.

+Michelle Meireles oh, I forgot to mention that I paint with sumi inks and Chinese watercolors, I've never used the dr. Martin's ink like the ones he's using but I think it should be the same result as they're all water soluble pigments and dyes.

BowerBomB this is an oooold comment haha but I tend to remove painters tape without any ripping of the page by using a blow dryer with heat on it while slowly peeling it off!
