Required Cybersecurity Skill: Understanding Basic Networking Concepts

- In this video, I'm taking it back to basics. I get asked ALL the time where to start to get into cybersecurity. Understanding how networking works at a fundamental level is critical. It is a required Cybersecurity Skill: Understanding Basic Networking Concepts If you don't know how computers are suppose to talk to each other, how do you know when they are doing it in a malicious way, or how to take advantage of weaknesses. The OSI stack is the model modern networks use and it is paramount to "get" it. I run through OSI, and give practical examples. Then I show you how to use Wireshark to visualize network traffic. It's less cyber this week, but just as important in your career.

I'm 32 with no degree and no prior experience in cyber security just getting my bearings on where to start my career (niche). Just wanted to say thanks for breaking the network down I found it extremely helpful and valuable any suggestions greatly appreciated thanks!
It's been 7 months so by now you should have Networking fundamentals down right? Start learning Linux next, then Python,. Master those 2 and the world is yours!! Now get after it, make 2023 ur year!!!
I'm 35 and I agree with this message lol
I'm 34 with the same question
@@phabeondominguez5971 to oversaturated there are no jobs I’ve spent 3 years learning a lot of stuff and the most I have received is crap contract work low paying

From my understanding of what you need to for networking for cybersecurity or security operations standpoint is the deployment of routers and switches, firewalls, SIEMs, NIDS, HIDS and network taps. How you set them up, placement or positioning of them , how they work within a business enviroment. This then raises the question how do you go about securing this business private LAN from the external network ? The deployment of HIPS, NIDS, or Stateful and Stateless firewalls and can you audit the network and identify any open ports using basic pentesting tools and understand their output alongside understanding of endpoint protection and soild of understanding of network traffic. Once you can understood this your pretty much nearly there.
Most likely subscribers w/ bell for notification may have seen this video in the first hour it was released and realized I uploaded the raw video for this video today by accident. This version is the final product. Sorry for any confusion!

Gerald what I really like about you, is you clarify "what you don't need to know" so many other instructors will tell you information that is helpful for the big picture but do not say "but you don't need to know X you need to know Y"
Thanks, is shows me where to focus my efforts and helps me understand my goal much better!
Thanks Matthew. Love that feedback.
I want to learn but do not have a laptop for studies how do I start

I'm subscribed! Watching this 37 min vid has given me the confidence now to approach my company to move into their cyber security division! I found you a few months ago and then my instructor at the university I'm attending for my masters in cybersecurity referred me to you! I like those referrals!!! Thank you so much for all your valuable content. Stay secure!!!
Of all your videos, this is the one I keep coming back to. So much value here!
Dr. Auger is the best! My professor and still today a mentor I watch every Monday when you upload new vids. Networking was an area I always struggled to understand but I'm getting it. OSI and TCP/IP are awesome topics!
Thank you so much this is my first step into the field and I found your video to be so fun to watch and listen. I appreciate that you took the time to do this !
Good stuff absolutely been abusing your content as a computer science student interested in cyber security. It's a new avenue I had not considered and you are my hero so far.
Thanks, Gerald for such amazing content and for making it so easy to understand.
It’s always funny to listen to someone with so much knowledge trying to explain/teach it to others. It’s so much harder than some think. Like when I’m trying to teach my kid how to do a certain math problem, I’m like yeah it’s easy and then trying to break it down in learning terms is so much harder in some instances and making it understandable.
This! Knowing something is one skill, being able to teach it in a productive manner is a COMPLETLY separate skill!
Hi Gerald! Your channel is truly a blessing for someone planning a career shift, so thank you! I'd like to ask you a few books you'd recommend studying for someone with no IT or cybersecurity background before even trying to get any certification. I'd like to invest my time in building a solid foundation in this amazing field.
OMG this video is honestly a gem. Thank you Gerald.
Thank you so much for making this video! It really helped me understand some concepts that I had issues with as I prepare for Security+!
Sheet Music thank you for sharing this feedback. It’s fuel for me in making content.
Love the sweet and short need to know information so I don't waste my time!
This is absolutely fantastic.
Hi Gerald thank you so much for the effort you've put in to your page. It has given me a good starting point.
Great explanation and tips. Thank you for all you do.
You’re simply the freaking best dude! A comment and a Thank you is not enough
Thanks so much! Very kind of you.
Great job condensing the concept of neworking in less than an hour! On a minor note, at 13:59 when you explain about DNS, it is referred to as Domain Naming Services instead of Domain Naming System. Still, great video Gerald! Just like the other content you create such as the Daily Cyber Threat Brief on Simply Cyber. Your commitment to deliver quality cyber content is a gift to our industry :) Thank you!
@Marcio No problem, DNS can also be called Domain name service as per standards of Comptia! It's just the same thing bro Chill!
You are doing great job! Many thanks!!
Great as always.
Loved it bro thank you so much and please post more videos like this!!!!

Thanks for sharing this video, my first watched video from you was on the topic "How To Ge Into Cybersecurity with no Experience", indeed this is helping me in many ways as I am preparing to venture into this field, thereby making it a lifetime career, hope to get an admission soon from my scholarship application..
Great video. Thanks for this.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Hello Gerald, thank you for taking the time to explain Networking. I'm currently at the OCI Model/ TCP/IP chapter in my ISC2 CC certification course and it definitely put these terms and network stacks in perspective for me. Also, the recommendation of using wire shark to practice? will definitely do. Thank you once again.
Wow, man, everybody has that light bulb moment, and finally, after this video, this is starting to make sense in my brain. I have been struggling to understand how this works, but this was a PERFECT video to explain it. Huge thanks!
Same. I’m only 10 minutes into the video and the stuff I’ve learned in both networking classes that I’ve taken in college finally make sense lol
@@ItsDrSkills Same here! I found this video at the perfect timing!! Thank you algorithm haha
Nice overview... lots of learning.. Thanks a lot...
Thanks for taking the time to comment and check out the video. Networking is so critical to understand to crush it at infosec.
@@SimplyCyber nice insight Gerald. Do you recommend CCNA and higher Networking certs like CCNP?
In Q4 2023, I was laid off. My search for a new career path began and I chose the fantastic path of Cybersecurity which I had been tapping at a personal level for years. But as a manager, you tend to focus your attention to other aspects of the business and I want to move to a more technical area. Why I am saying this? What Gerry is saying is absolutely true. You need to understand how systems interconnect. I did my post graduate degree in 1999, yes a year before the big Y2K buzz and I created a router as one of my projects. I wish I could go back in time and grab that brain and bring it to the present. Oh how I miss that brain, 😂.
Thanks :D
No problem!
I’m starting all my cyber security training now. I have an old CCNA from like back in 2013. I re-went through all the information for the new CNA. I was wondering if it would be beneficial or not needed to retake the exam before taking my security plus and everything else I’m planning.
Also, if anybody’s interested Kevin Wallace who is a Cisco trainer in February is going to be offering a free play three day Boot Camp and the CNA if you sign up now I guess you can get it for free otherwise it will be like $70. He’s a fabulous teacher also in networking .
Thanks for the information I appreciate it a lot. Unfortunately I got really bored and had a hard time following. Just me but really appreciate it 🙏
Thanks for checking out the content. Either here or somewhere else, learning basic networking is important in the IT/infosec space.
Cool video, definitely learned some good stuff from it. Kinda annoying that it's in 720p, it's very difficult to read some of the text on the screen. Thanks again
Thanks! On my way to a new career in cybersec at 49...So, i'm a beginner, and i begin with this network basics, like the OSI model here.Even just for me, should i go straight to the N+/Sec + certifs, or will it be too complex with my beginner knowledge, and begin by A+/ITF?Many thanks.
Crush it Marc! you got this.
Thanks for the great content. I'm looking to get into the industry and just cannot seem to decide if I should go back to college and get a degree in cybersecurity or go the certification route. What would you suggest?
It really depends on your career goals and urgency for money. College degree should give you a more grounded, wider exposure to the field, but costs money/takes time. It will help long term, but if you get certs and compliment your resume with labs you should be able to get access to the same opportunities. There is a great cert chart here that can help you zero in on certs that apply to where you want to go: pauljerimy.com/security-certification-roadmap/
I am a software developer and i am really interested and have ambition to get a job in cybersecurity especially in ethical hacking. I have studied about general networking stuff, such as WAN, LAN, TCP/IP. If I’m not mistaken, I also taught about to calculate the subnet but until now, I still confuse about it. I also have a background in programming and among of it, I am more comfortable to Python and sometimes I quite struggle for some Python basic, I can reached out to the documentation. But since I only want to know, or to be honest, to re-study the networking basic, is it enough for me to have these foundation and start playing around with the tools such as nmap, wireshark, then start to apply the job in the cybersecurity roles?
Throughout my years of experience in this field, I've encountered numerous individuals who lack adequate experience. It is imperative that we elevate this profession to a graduate level and eliminate some of the low-quality practitioners who are pervasive in the IT industry
I already have the Net+ and I'm taking the Sec+ next week, would you suggest the CCNA certification prior to start in cybersecurity or can I go straight to eJPT and PNPT and start playing on THM?
i have / had (dont maintain it) CCNA. I dont think its needed for infosec. CCNA is super focused on how cisco networks work, and while you do learn about different routing and resiliency and such, i think you can get more value puttting your time elsewhere, sepcially if you have network+.
Thank you for this video, My age is 29 and considering to change my career to Cybersecurity. I don't have a degree in IT / CS. But worked as Network engineer for 2 years.
Is it worth taking a 3 year bachelor course in cybersecurity now considering AI in the upcoming years ? How much does AI reduce the jobs in cybersecurity department in future ?
I have a passion in the networking field but little worried about the future. Please clear this.
AI will help make our ability to respond faster, but wont replace humans. Threat actors are humans and they can be clever and trick tooling. Humans will use tooling (and AI) to be more efficient and timely in response.
So would you say that having the N+ or CCNA is too much if we don't want to go specifically into networking? I know the basics of the OSI model as you mentioned in the video but how will employers know that I know that without seeing something network cert related on my resume? Should I just go for the S+ instead? Thank you so much for providing all this knowledge btw. I've been in IT application support for at least 8 years now but I want to move up and have a specialty besides app support.
N+ would be fine. CCNA is a harder examine, more hands on the tech itself and is specialized to cisco hardware. A good chunk of the exam is actually configuring virtualized cisco network routers. Really nothing to do with direct security there. I wouldnt invest time/money in CCNA unless you were going to be very hands on network security person (working at a Ciscoshop business). Sec+ is where I'd start. Alot of people will say get networking+ first than security but i didnt and I was fine ( I have a cmpsci bg though so your exp may differ). Having said all that, the N+ cert wont do much for you other than convey to interviewers that you should know networking concepts. Actually knowing them and folding them into your responses (and your actual work) is where the value shines. Best wishes/
@@SimplyCyber thank you so much for the information and response.
@@chrisr4715 it's been a year now, where you at with all of this now?
@@phabeondominguez5971 haha I actually forgot all about this. But to answer your question I only read through a cisco networking technologies book and was able to apply the knowledge to my job. I'm an application administrator so I really just need to understand some networking along with common ports such as dhcp, static ips, ssh, ftp, sftp, https that was enough for me. I think knowing the information was critical bc I was able to secure a very good pay raise since last year. Good luck!
@@chrisr4715 ahh gotcha, similar situation for me, except I actually do INFOSEC but without a solid networking foundation so of course the imposter syndrome hits, and may actually be legit in my case..
I can earn this job without getting my knees dirty! Awesome!😆
What if I dont like Pyhton and coding at all, can I still persue a career in cybersecurity?
Hi Mr. Auger my name is Mansoor. I wanted to ask you some question about beginners and basically new to the collage and doesn't know what to do!
so Im here for a lil advice If you have time its not its totally fine so lets get to the point what's like a big strategies to be a better at cybersecurity field and what are the thing you should actually focus? Collages nowadays they only teaches from what the book says and most of the time it gets boring I wish they make it like seems fun instead of just giving 3 hours lectures and no one gets the point. I hope you see this message and let me know what are some classes that I should get started with cause if I dont know the basic and jump up to a higher lvl and be like what is going on? I hope you have a great day and good video
Jus get out there and do it moco, don't wait for someone else to tell you what to do man!!
