Only Mike would use old newspapers on this project. Younger masons would put some overpriced material from a box store. That's what separates Mike from other masons, he knows what works. No substitute for experience!
Thanks James, Mike
Agreed James. I always marvel at the cheap pieces of paper, plastic or styrofoam in an 8 dollar packages at the big box stores.
Thats b/c you NEED to use EXNEWS 5000 ...
Its 99.99% recycled newspaper with a 0.001% "proprietary, patented, trade secrete blend of vitimens, minerals and antioxidants" that make it 5000 times more resistant to unicorn damage then standard newspaper... Its ONLY 99$ a square foot. ...
If you dont use it you concrete will explode, your houses warranty will be void and the unicorns win!!
Very nice! Love your old school mentality.
Tanks user, Mike
Your an amazing mason, Mike. My grandfather was a mason and I remember as a kid watching him work. Back in the day he use to do field stone foundations. I am in central NJ and I can't find any one to do my front porch steps. Your customers should be grateful they have such a great craftsman, like yourself available.
Thanks Joseph, I hear a lot of people remembering the old stone masons, the old days are gone, I appreciate it, Mike
If I was chipping the stones with a hammer like Mike you’d soon see a stone with cracks everywhere except where I needed them to be.
Mike as always, you did a stellar job!
Thanks Clint, I guess a bit more practice, lol, Mike
I liek to score with the grinder then chip them.. b/c i havn't yet graduated from the MHSHK
"I'll cut it with my big saw", hammer...hammer...hammer...done
Thanks Sam, I try, Mike
I wish more people were as interested as you, in doing a proper job. No matter the task or size of any job, you always deliver an handbook result Sir.
Thanks Richard, Mike
Turned out quite nice Mike. Thanks for the video.
Paul
Thanks Paul, Mike
Thanks for the information Mike!! Great video!
Thanks Scott, Mike
Looks great! You always look like an expert using your hammer to form rock and concrete blocks.
Thanks yoga, Mike
Looks nice Mike! Enjoy your video's, can't wait for the next one. I repointed my stone chimney myself thanks to your youtube video's😃 I'm a machinist but it came out really nice.
Thanks TK, that's a good thing, Mike
Beautiful work Mike!
Thanks Ken, Mike
Mike, i dig the way you lay flagstone. I typically lay mine with tighter mortar joints, but you did a great job of making sure all your joints are relatively evenly spaced so it still looks really good 👌
Thanks Jon, Mike
Thank you Mike 🌺🌺🌺
Thanks Eman, Mike
You are the real deal. Excellent old school mason. Excellent content
Thanks Frank, Mike
Mike, what do your friends say when you tell them you are a UA-cam star? Not sure if you ever talked about your success.
Hi dfur, I don't think it's a big deal but I get some howdys when I am about, so it's a good thing, thanks Mike
Always good Mike...I try and soak up a few tips and I get to have a little laugh along the way! Thanks Mike.
Thanks Juliet, Mike
nice smart pitch! good job
Thanks Brian, Mike
I hate those jobs where you have to use a ton of cement like that. I learned so much from these videos over the years. Thanks Mike!
Thanks Lee, Mike
geat job Mike brings back old memories with the newspaper put hand up to old school is best way but you never stop learning Mike 👌👍
Thanks Tom, Mike
I subscribe to this channel for help with the wimmin as much as help with masonry. Thanks for the advice, Mike.
Thanks Brian, lol, Mike
Thanks, Mike, for this video. Cheers!
Thanks Francisco, Mike
I laughed out loud when you hand cut the stone at 6:48. Reminded me of my step-dad, back in the day. I love your videos!👏
Thanks JD, Mike
THANKS MIKE
Thanks Don, Mike
Beautiful! I have learned so much from you!
Thanks Deb, Mike
Awesome job
Thanks Mtec, Mike
I love watching these videos! If you told 10, 12, 16, 25, he’ll even 30 year old me that I would enjoy watching a mason from PA explain his work, I would have laughed in your face! I have been watching these since I built my outdoor oven three years ago and I love em! Makes me want to find another project to get my trowel out for. Lots of knowledge packed in along with a master craftsman telling you to relax “it’s no big deal.”
Thanks Chris, I appreciate it, Mike
Great job! Good detail with the newspaper. I used paper towels as a speration for a brick detail one time. I thought I was being so smart.... apparently I'm not as smart as I thought. Lol. I like the joints installed the same day!! Great job
Thanks Gibson, we might have learned from same guy, lol, Mike
That looks great! Nice job
Thanks Sue, Mike
Beautiful
Thanks ajaz, Mike
Looks good! Would love to have you come up to western NY to do a front set of steps like that for me.
Thanks, I appreciate you asking but overwhelmed with what I got, thanks again, Mike
That homeowner sure sounded like your plumber friend.
Hi Jon, they do, local language I guess, thanks Mike
Mike wasn't sure if I did my patio floor (16' x 8' in Vermont slate) correct. I set stones on 2 ½" of a
3 to 1 Portland sand mix. I didn't do joints at same time ,which I should of. I placed about 6 stones to 8 a day. Joints done with a 2 to 1 portland to sand mix. 4 years later no cracks. NY/NJ area. 🙏
Hi JD, you should be ok, Portland was the right choice in my opinion, thanks Mike
Great stuff, really enjoying watching and learning from your mastery.
Thanks ghos, Mike
Hey, Mike! Beautiful work! Would you make a how to video to create a dutch oven in a fireplace, while you're building it? Thanks for your terrific videos!
Hi Anna if I had a call for it I would, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck Rats! I'll just have to do a crappy job without your help
You do beautiful stone work Mike.
Very clean and nicely done!
Thanks again, Mike
Perfect!
Thanks Adam, Mike
Mike, that looked like an uncomfortable spot to work in, on top of that stoop. The angles you cut in those stones made them fit together in a great-looking pattern. I've kind of gotten the hang of breaking and facing stones from watching you do it. It isn't as hard as I thought it would be -- I just decided to not make a big deal of it and try, and with some practice I was able to do it. Thanks!
Thanks Bill, that's great, Mike
Beautiful work...I wish I can have my stoop done like that with your help.
Thanks Noel, Mike
I ♡ the way the cut limestone comes out flush with existing brick. And the Pennsylvania Boys know their onions!"◇Psalm 118:22◇
Thanks Tod, Mike
Are you getting out on your boat this summer? All work and no play.......
Hi Hopper, was on a friend's last week, thanks Mike
My day's house built in 1962 has a terracotta colored tile broke up just like that for a stoop. It's bordered with brick. It and his stairs are flawless to this day. It's in AL. I always wonder what old timer tricks were used for it's longevity.
Thanks Mikey, here the winters kill it but down there you should get a long time, thanks Mike
Self healing concrete is an interesting technology Mike
Thanks Mike
Looked great! When you make the joints as you do it, do you make the joints proud of the slate? Im just wondering if you do, if they flatten out as it dries? Do you do it that way to direct the water away from the joints? If they are flush or low, would the water tend to puddle in the joints? I remember you saying that the cement isn’t water proof, so I was wondering how does it keep, or limit moisture from getting under the slate?
Hi Joe, I keep them as even to the stone as I can, I want the water to run off fast, thanks Mike
Good morning Mr. Haduck. Just want to know if you recommend sealing all the projects with a sealant.
Hi Al, in this case I know the owner plans to do it, the thing is in our area especially winter, sealers could be slippery, thanks Mike
Your videos should be mandatory curriculum in masonry school (if such a thing exists).
Thanks for the kind words, Mike
If I tried cutting the stone like that, I would probably ruin the entire thing ... lol I mean with the hammer ...
Thanks Super, is just practice, thanks Mike
I have watched a couple of your videos and it’s killing me every time you use that black rubber mallet.
Thanks MrBig, Mike
fantastic project .. you make it look sooo easy Mike! Maybe I missed it .. were those first stones put in and the cement dried before you installed the rest?
Hi Thor, yes, I was using the days cement up, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck thank you!
Can anyone order concrete truck or only masons? Thanks, Mike. Your videos are awesome.
Hi Marni, anyone could , what they have a tendency to do is put you on the back burner for deliveries, but I usually call and let the owners pay for it, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck Thanks so much, Mike!
Hey Mike, for your parge mix can you use play sand? I thought I heard you mention play sand in one of your videos but majority of your videos you mention you use masonry sand.
Thanks in advance Mike, really appreciate the content you put out!
Hi Joe, I have used it in the past and never had a problem, Mike
Paint back of stone with Portland cement for a better bond.
Hi ,if Portland mix is rich it's not needed, makes stones harder to clean and leaves Portland lines in joints,, thanks mike
@@MikeHaduck your only doing the back
Hey Mike, just finished a PA blue stone patio using the portland sand mix. Do you normally seal the slate/blue stone and portland with any type sealer? Thank you!!
Hi Lou, that's great, I am not always a fan of sealers as they could be slippery but if I use them I wait about 30 days to let it cure, whatever the directions say, thanks Mike
Can I use Quikrete High Strength Concrete Mix 4000 PSI (which has portland cement, sand, and gravel)?
Hi user, I only use what I showed on my video, it's all my ways and ideas and opinions, so it's hard to tell anybody else how to do it. Mike
Doing a flagstone over an outdoor slab in North Florida would you use 2 sand to 1 Type S or maybe even an extra scoop of Portland? We do get a light freeze a few times a year.
Hi Cbr, I can't say, but I personally wouldn't use anything but Portland, maybe 1 Portland to 2 1/2 or 3 sand, my opinion, thanks Mike
I made forms to look like cobblestone .individual stone shapes using type s with a little regular old sakrete .also made stone shapes like your stones for treads do concrete stones apply the same way as real stone like you have there?
Hi Lana, I never use type S to form anything, it falls apart, usually Portland and sand, I hope it works out for you thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck well thank you Mike but I think I will just trust in your expert knowledge and use Portland LOL
I have about 400 stones to make and I just made one I said Each of our five forms but for the other 290 sounds I will use Portland and sand
That text should read 390 instead of 290
I have a video out called " how I make concrete wall caps" Mike haduck, if I did it again I would have added a trowel full of Portland extra in each bag, thanks Mike
mike nice video, were's your knee pads.
You didn’t see the memory foam from an old car seat? Mike’s old skool
Hi T, yep I use the foam pads when I could , thanks Mike
Great video as always! What mix did you use for this job?
Hi Eric, 2 sand 1 Portland, Mike
Hi Eric, 2 sand 1 Portland, Mike
Did you use your same 2:1 portland to sand ratio for this?
Hi Andrew, yes, in my area that is what I use, thanks Mike
Mike, in this video, at the end, you talk about not using mortar, because it shrinks and instead using 2 sand 1 Portland. Isn’t 2 sand 1 Portland a mortar? I am confused.
I use your videos as gospel. Bought some Rapid Set mortar to play with as well.
And still waiting on that S Mortar video. 😆
Hi Travis, no Portland is not mortar, but rapid set calls it a mortar because of its usage, confusing, I think that s mortar video is coming out today or tomorrow, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck
So mortar is lime and sand and no cement?
I do not use mortar or lime on stone patios. Only Portland and sand, other masons might preach different but that's what I use, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck
Is your 2 sand to 1 Portland like a mortar? What would you call your mix then?
Isn’t mortar just sand, cement, water?
I think that is where I am confused.
You say you don’t use mortar or lime but isn’t your mix a mortar? What am I missing?
I apologize for not understanding. No big deal 😆
Mike cant cant get paid from a job unless he plays an outro for the owner on his banjo.
Hi Zach, good idea, lol, Mike
Hi Mike, enjoy your videos. They are very informative and funny.
What do you think of the new waterproof cement from Rapid Set?
Hi Robert, I am not familiar with it, I will have to see, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck Home Depot sells it here in GA.
@@MikeHaduck I bought three bags tonight to waterproof our basement. They're expensive at $25.00 a 50lb bag.
Surprised you didnt lay the flagstone out dry first
Hi Mark, I did to a point, but it was small, thanks Mike
I have been trying to find flagstone installation videos for an interior room (kitchen). Anyone have any idea if the steps would be similar to this? Do I need an underlayment (something like ditra or just building paper) if it’s in the kitchen?
Would appreciate it if anyone can help with some recommendations or knowledge, thanks in advance!
Hi, Stone patio installation (part 6) inside foyer Mike haduck , might help, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck, thank you very much for your reply and time. I've been watching your videos and have really appreciated the detail in your videos. Keep up the great work!
Cement is to wet. The stones are all floating and moving. Stone should be in a dry pack mortar.
Hi, dry pack dosent hold up in our weather, I would be back repairing it 5 years, thanks mike
@@MikeHaduck weather no different than mine. Actually more freeze thaw cycles here.
One question what mix was your mud for this job?
Hi Barry, 1 part Portland 2 parts mason sand, thanks Mike
First
@@Jack.333 thank you Johnny. May I have another?
