  • Tom Stoppard in conversation with Leopoldstadt director Patrick Marber. A passionate drama of love, family and endurance.
    --
At the beginning of the 20th century, Leopoldstadt was the old, crowded Jewish quarter of Vienna, Austria. But Hermann Merz, a factory owner and baptised Jew now married to Catholic Gretl, has moved up in the world.
We follow his family’s story across half a century, passing through the convulsions of war, revolution, impoverishment, annexation by Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. A company of 40 actors represent each generation of the family in this epic, but intimate play.
Filmed live on stage in London’s West End by National Theatre Live, ‘Tom Stoppard’s masterpiece is magnificent’ (Independent) and should not be missed.

Had the good fortune of meeting Sir Tom outside Chichester theatre in 2015. He was a bit taken aback at first by this random 17 year-old boy tapping him on the arm gently to get his attention. He looked down at me, quite stonily, and I immediately felt a huge rush of anxiety and felt i'd made a terrible mistake in interrupting this famous playwright. But then his expression softened, which, in turn, softened me, I stuttered a little, he explained that his son had a stammer as well, which was hugely kind of him to mention as it put me at ease. We had a brisk but friendly conversation, shook hands and that was it. A true gentleman. I was kind of hoping i'd pop up in a future play of his, but no word on that yet.

A great story. Until the last line. If you ever did pop up in a play of TS, you'd never recognize yourself, or if you did, you might well, at the least, be chagrined.

@@MrJohndoe17 If I were to be subtly defamed and lambasted by anyone, it'd be Sir Tom Stoppard :)

Well at least I have one thing in common with this genius. I also liked Johnnie Ray and Frankie Laine.

Stoppard would approve of the following : editors not that in the subtitles you have 'lead' where you mean 'led'.

Screening date for New York? (And please don’t say “soon”, which is what the NTLive website has been saying for ages now.)

I love TS. He is progressive but not Progressive. EG, history exists. He is not in the cult of Self-Improvement, not an automaton of the Therapeutic Age.
