it's funny how old features that everyone deemed unnecessary or impractical are the same things that make this phone so great now. phone companies have taken away so many basic features it feels weird to have them now

Agreed. Man, I don't know when everyone became photographers. The specs on the lowest mid-rangers (I know, an oxymoronic expression) will get you a really nice quality photo. That is, if all you're planning to do with it is to post it on social media or keep it in your phone. Because not many people will look if it's incredibly sharp/crisp, bright, dark, clear or anything... for a shot you took on your phone. Now sure, some people want to use it as a legit camera, and I understand why they want and really need the highest specs. But for most people, it doesn't really matter. This is why I usually don't care about the camera review part on a phone review, because I know they're all at the very least decent. Hell, I have 64mp with 4k60 video on a 200$ phone. So yea... This zenfone is still a beast for me

Yep, the xperia 5ii is currently in the lead in this category in my opinion, but ASUS hopping in is very much welcomed. Wish the design was better with a micro SD slot, but that why the xperia 5 ii is better

@@ahsan.v8 i don't share this opinion, having a three/five times or 10 times optical zoom is sometimes helpful and Huawei Zoom on the P40 Pro+ or Samsung S21 Ultra is very good but yes *if necessary* I also think the zoom camera could be dropped, however what in my opinion can not be dropped it's the wide angle lens, even if the photos are complete bad quality, you are at least able to do wide-angle shots, and even the worst wide angle camera is there better than using Panorama Mode

@@ahsan.v8 Nah the ideal setup is 3 camera system with a main one, a 2x or 2.5x telephoto , and an ultrawide with autofocus(for macro). I know why you dont want a zoom lens on phone and yeah the 60x 100x zooms are not practical but a smaller zoom lens can click better potraits. The same effect can't be manipulated by zooming the main camera lens 2x digitally. I have personally experienced the 2x lens potraits turn out to be better than 2x digital zoom potrait on main cam. It seems like the 2x lens aperture and field of view play a role in framing the potrait shots.
So, basically it is small enough to fit in my pocket, has high end performance and is affordable. So, who the f cares about the look? In my opinion a perfect phone (except the camera which I don’t care about)

This is the most beautiful phone I've seen in a while! The design of this phone is the perfect contrast to the flashy, vulgar and tasteless phones from other brands, which somehow people got used to them being so kitsch. No idiotic notches, no stove like looking cameras, no unnecessary huge sizes, no exterior colors designed to impress children, just a simple, elegant design, with stereo speakers and 3.5mm jack. Superb!

Tbh I love how they squeezed everything in a tiny size. There are people like me who wants smaller phones but also in android. There's also people who doesn't care much about the looks as long as its easy to carry and hold.

This is the man if you ask me... Back then,he don't hv many followers and viewers.. Yet he put his heart into his video.. Everything must be special..the light, audio, editing and every little detail..he work really hard to make his video ultra crisp... And now guess what..? only for several hours..he get million views.. Hard work pay off!! And As he always said, sub to his channel are absolutely remarkable!
They took the name of “Zen” to a pleasant surprise in design. Its sleek, but not too rounded. Basic, but not too plain. Packed with value, but not too pricy. But even if you wanna spice it up, just customize it with a cool case or some nice themes. Although im kinda stuck with Apple due to account reasons, I probably would have thought to get this phone since its cheaper.
Oh and if Dbrand sells skins for the Zenphone 8, you can slap a nice skin on it. So the basic design on the back is a nice touch because if you want a nice design on a phone, you'd be compelled to leave the phone as is leaving it vulnerable to cracks when you drop it which can be mitigated by a skin like from Dbrand or a case.

There's one great point in favor of this phone that you didn't mentioned. It has a DAC (digital audio converter) that converts your digital HIRES audio service (e.g. Qobuz or Tidal) to analog output: this means that you can hook up your audio jack to a high end headset or to a HIFI system or aux car input. The DAC manages to read up to 384 kHz / 32-bit PCM files or streams: this means that this little phone can act as a stunning hires audio streamer. THAT'S the reason for still having a jack audio... A part from this, Great review, as always. :)

💯 It's frustrating when people say the headphone jack is going away. If you do anything with audio professionally or personally then you probably have some high quality headphones. It'd be nice to use them with your smartphone without a pointless dongle.

Yeah, unless wireless headphone/earbud manufacturer somehow magically find a way to deliver wired quality sound with no latency and infinite battery, that jack is not going to go away, nor should it. I mean, I get it. Wireless 'phones are very convenient, but they still can't replace wired entirely yet.

That's where those wired earphones/headphones shines. A good quality will last you minimum 5 years some even 10 or more. The way Arun just comfortably makes jokes in his videos now just shows how much he loves his job. He was quirky here and there back then but now he's just more himself and just enjoying the process of making the video. The kind of wholesome real stuff you like to see on this platform.

Just got mine here in Brazil and I am really impressed with the overall quality, specs and price. I wanted a smaller phone that didn’t compromise on specs and performance. Coming from my second Asus (Zenfone 3 zoom), can’t say I’m disappointed. Stellar job from Asus. Don’t think it looks boring or prototype like. It’s elegant and discreet. Some people like to show that they spend this or that much money on their phones, but not me. Cheers.

Yep, it seems to have been reviewed by the wrong guy actually. I love his videos (at least the ones I watch) but Arun doesn't look like someone who's into minimal designs and finishes. That's evident from the finish of his house's floor to the thumbnails of his videos and texts used on his videos.
@thatCapN Crunch I'm sure you can always forgo using the case they provide for something heavily detailed (though probably not like their teen+20-something-oriented ROK phones). Or the Pixel 6 might serve you well. It's ~US $500 and about as loaded at that price point as anything I can think of... I keep looking at the xperia phones... but they're out of my budget for now (still $800 for the 5 III)... I don't like Samsung's photo processing OR Apple's for totally different reasons (Samsung oversaturates and makes photos lose nuanced details in doing so as they process the info; it can make painting-like vivid sunsets, but they don't look authentic). iPhone does that with skin tones and facial features where suddenly people who are neutral tone and not richly pigmented are golden and tan with color bursting out but mostly stays neutral for scenery... my issue is that in trying to look oh so sharp it does this oddball crayon-like edging, especially noticeable when there are shadows behind or under that it tries to lighten when there's any detail and the color is pretty uniform but (take plant leaves) might have some brighter spots from light... iPhone cameras (well, the top iPhones) have a lot of potential but the software screws over details of such weird things that it turns a lot of pics into something that looks like it was in a coloring book, not a real object, because of the fake edges and odd shadow handling/oversharpening things that lack features in the real world view of it. Sony stores the raw files and has solid sensors... I think they use Carl Zeiss optics, too, which my most beloved cell phone of all did and it had pictures better than "top" phones 5 years newer just because of the legit lenses and optical zoom (I miss the sound of the thicker but so worth it camera when it would do its zoom down tiny bit by tiny bit and save it as a full file unlike all of these that compress everything so much).
A phone that fulfills all your needs and most of the desires. I m using zenfone 5z for the last 2 years without any issue. I find zenfone 8 to be the perfect upgrade.

2023 and just ordered one, because this is just what I need, a powerful phone with compact size and minimalistic design without fancy fragile features, and saved few hundred bucks from purchasing the newer Zenfone 9. (I use a Fuji X camera for photos) so not fuzzed on camera performance
Your review actually made me buy the phone. Waiting for it to release after pre-ordering it. It's pretty much everything I want in a phone, down to the form factor and jack. The only downside for me is the camera system, but I think it's still going to be miles better than what I have currently (OP5). Been waiting for a phone exactly like this for 2 years.

Battery life is absolute dogshit (I can get maybe 2h of SoT at most if I play, and I have to charge the phone during the day if I just use it normally, which is kind of a low usage for most ppl), and the phone heats up like crazy. It's very snappy and comfortable to use otherwise. Photos aren't all that great.

To the point that I fell asleep one night playing a game and got woken up a few minutes later because it was burning my face. I had to take it out of its case to run water on it to cool it down, I was really afraid it would just die. They've updated the system a lot of times though reducing energy consumption and it doesn't get too hot now, and the battery survives longer.
@@ThatRandomNova I really wanted a Spigen case like I had on my oneplus before because they are really strong and nice looking cases, but they don't do them for asus phones. I've bought a rhinoshield one instead, they're not too bad. More expensive and less nice looking though than the spigen ones.
I was recommended this, when asking for an android with a smaller screen and the fact that the design is simple and it doesn't have a million cameras, I really like that, as a 20ish year old boomer.. Also, the AUX is great, I love that

Tbh I love how they squeezed everything in a tiny size. There are people like me who wants smaller phones but also in android. There's also people who doesn't care much about the looks as long as its easy to carry and hold.
Most people go for big phones since there is no other choice, while most women use their men's salary to buy the iPhone which isn't that big.

They took the name of “Zen” to a pleasant surprise in design. Its sleek, but not too rounded. Basic, but not too plain. Packed with value, but not too pricy. But even if you wanna spice it up, just customize it with a cool case or some nice themes. Although im kinda stuck with Apple due to account reasons, I probably would have thought to get this phone since its cheaper.
All of my friends have iPhones, so I really wanna stick with them. Otherwise, I’d definitely buy.
Oh and if Dbrand sells skins for the Zenphone 8, you can slap a nice skin on it. So the basic design on the back is a nice touch because if you want a nice design on a phone, you'd be compelled to leave the phone as is leaving it vulnerable to cracks when you drop it which can be mitigated by a skin like from Dbrand or a case.

There's one great point in favor of this phone that you didn't mentioned.

💯 It's frustrating when people say the headphone jack is going away. If you do anything with audio professionally or personally then you probably have some high quality headphones. It'd be nice to use them with your smartphone without a pointless dongle.

Yeah, unless wireless headphone/earbud manufacturer somehow magically find a way to deliver wired quality sound with no latency and infinite battery, that jack is not going to go away, nor should it. I mean, I get it. Wireless 'phones are very convenient, but they still can't replace wired entirely yet.

That's where those wired earphones/headphones shines. A good quality will last you minimum 5 years some even 10 or more. Just got mine here in Brazil and I am really impressed with the overall quality, specs and price. I wanted a smaller phone that didn’t compromise on specs and performance. Coming from my second Asus (Zenfone 3 zoom), can’t say I’m disappointed. Stellar job from Asus. Don’t think it looks boring or prototype like. It’s elegant and discreet. Some people like to show that they spend this or that much money on their phones, but not me. Cheers.

Yep, it seems to have been reviewed by the wrong guy actually. I love his videos (at least the ones I watch) but Arun doesn't look like someone who's into minimal designs and finishes. That's evident from the finish of his house's floor to the thumbnails of his videos and texts used on his videos.

@thatCapN Crunch I'm sure you can always forgo using the case they provide for something heavily detailed (though probably not like their teen+20-something-oriented ROK phones). Or the Pixel 6 might serve you well. It's ~US $500 and about as loaded at that price point as anything I can think of... I keep looking at the xperia phones... but they're out of my budget for now (still $800 for the 5 III)... I don't like Samsung's photo processing OR Apple's for totally different reasons (Samsung oversaturates and makes photos lose nuanced details in doing so as they process the info; it can make painting-like vivid sunsets, but they don't look authentic). iPhone does that with skin tones and facial features where suddenly people who are neutral tone and not richly pigmented are golden and tan with color bursting out but mostly stays neutral for scenery... my issue is that in trying to look oh so sharp it does this oddball crayon-like edging, especially noticeable when there are shadows behind or under that it tries to lighten when there's any detail and the color is pretty uniform but (take plant leaves) might have some brighter spots from light... iPhone cameras (well, the top iPhones) have a lot of potential but the software screws over details of such weird things that it turns a lot of pics into something that looks like it was in a coloring book, not a real object, because of the fake edges and odd shadow handling/oversharpening things that lack features in the real world view of it. Sony stores the raw files and has solid sensors... I think they use Carl Zeiss optics, too, which my most beloved cell phone of all did and it had pictures better than "top" phones 5 years newer just because of the legit lenses and optical zoom (I miss the sound of the thicker but so worth it camera when it would do its zoom down tiny bit by tiny bit and save it as a full file unlike all of these that compress everything so much).

I m using zenfone 5z for the last 2 years without any issue.
I find zenfone 8 to be the perfect upgrade.

Your review actually made me buy the phone. Waiting for it to release after pre-ordering it. It's pretty much everything I want in a phone, down to the form factor and jack. Battery life is absolute dogshit (I can get maybe 2h of SoT at most if I play, and I have to charge the phone during the day if I just use it normally, which is kind of a low usage for most ppl), and the phone heats up like crazy. It's very snappy and comfortable to use otherwise. Photos aren't all that great.

To the point that I fell asleep one night playing a game and got woken up a few minutes later because it was burning my face. I had to take it out of its case to run water on it to cool it down, I was really afraid it would just die. They've updated the system a lot of times though reducing energy consumption and it doesn't get too hot now, and the battery survives longer.
