Hot Potato: 4/23/84, the first ever celebrity episode

Here's the first ever celebrity episode of Bill Cullen's "Hot Potato". Today's celebrities are Emma Samms, Phyllis Diller, Rene Enriquez, and Billy Hufsey. This one apparently never aired in its original run? How about that.

This is the only episode in "Hot Potato" history that only 1 player (Marji) on the same team, whose celebrities (Rene & Billy) have both been disqualified from the 2nd game of the match, and an unsuccessful challenge (from Tracy), came up with each/every one of these answers at the last minute.

I was never a fan of this show becoming a celebrity show. I found it not as exciting as watching regular contestants play and the celebrities weren't that great at playing anyways. In other words, if a show switches to a celebrity format, it's basically doomed.

I don't think the change in format was just because of ratings; it's also probably because the contestant pool was running out too fast.

The beginning of the end for this show. The only thing that made it interesting was the novelty of two teams of people with the same occupation, but seeing celebs (and D-list ones who really weren't that good as game players) and one contestant on each side just made it a boring game. Maybe if they still had two contestants on each side from the same occupation with one celeb "Captain" it would have been more tolerable but this format made me stop watching the show altogether.

The reason for this format right here, two celebrities and one contestant for both teams. On 4/20/1984 was the last episode of the 1st format of Hot Potato, and it last until June 29th, 1984.

The highlight of this episode is Marji winning the second round on her own, after her celebrity partners were benched.
