Our Daughter was ATTACKED BY A CAT in Fes Morocco

  • This week’s video is one that we really didn’t want to make. It was genuinely one of the worst weeks of our lives & definitely the scariest experience we’ve ever had on our travels.
Whilst leaving a restaurant in Fes Morocco, a cat came out of nowhere & launched itself onto Ady’s head. James pulled it off as it was biting & scratching her & got attacked too. There was lots of blood, lots of tears & it was absolutely terrifying.
What follows next is a few days of chaos as we do our best to navigate foreign medical services in a country where we don’t speak the language. Emotions are running high as we try to ensure James & Ady get Rabies & Tetanus vaccines in the time frame required.
Tune in to see how it all turns out.
Thanks for watching, catch you in the comments.

We watched your Fes video today. My husband is actually from Fes. During your video, he paused several times to show me that near the front door of each pharmacy you passed, there is paperwork listing all the pharmacies in Fes, their location and when each is open, so if the one you go to is closed, you can see which is the nearest one that is open and go there. He says that this is true for all Moroccan cities. There are 24hr pharmacies that have doctors who can give an injection right there on the spot as well. He had been to some of the pharmacies you stopped at or drove past. The problem is that no one bothered to explain this to you, which made you go on a scary wild goose chase. This is why he is telling you so that others will know in case an accident occurs. If you let us know how to send it, we can send a screenshot showing where this official paperwork is by the pharmacy front doors and what this paperwork actually looks like. He is sorry you missed out on Fes because no one told you how the health system works in Morocco. As far as stray cats go, they are everywhere looking for food. In fact, although we ourselves do not have any pet cats here in the US, he feeds strays that come into our yard.

First of all I'm sorry that you had to experience that, it's totally out of anyone's control, could've happened to any of us, and I've never seen a cat behave in that way in Morocco, all of the cats are friendly but i think I'll have to watch out more from them next time...thank you so much for sharing and i hope you're doing fine by now, please don't let this bad experience overshadow your love for the country of Morocco, bless us with more visits and videos in this wonderful land❤

Poor you - what a scary experience! Being a Morocco-lover myself I am glad you emphasize that this has nothing to do with the country.. However - as a parent we do get terrified when something like this happens! I have seen dogs with rabies in Morocco - but never cats.
My instant thought was that she had kittens close by... Still - well done on keeping us posted on the progress.
Hope all is well with you all now - thank you SO much for your positive and personal posts from Morocco 😍

I undertook a whistlestop tour of Morocco and visited many of the same sites as this family visited. I had a brilliant time, but as someone who has not travelled beyond Europe much before, I was shocked by the number of stray or semi-stray cats and dogs.
In my village in England there is not a single stray. Not one. If someone notices a new animal, particularly one that looks unkempt, they post the picture on Facebook and there's a fuss.
This is a huge cultural difference between the UK and Morocco.

Sorry for you all. Hugs all around! You are both amazing and wonderful parents. I am seeing this about 6 days later than the post. You did everything right to take all precautions recommended and available. For the future when it comes to cat BITES (even if its your own cat and you are playing ) it is probably a very good idea to use precaution and oral prophylactic Rx to prevent infection. This is even more the case if you are somewhere where medical care is not so easy. Cats mouths carry some nasty stuff :-( . When I was traveling the world with my baby daughter my medical travel kit was very extensive. I had some broad spectrum antibiotics, fluid (electrolyte) replacement packs, and lots of other paraphernalia :-) There is also a book I always had with emergency care instructions (simply described and with pictures). I also had a book titled “Where there is no Doctor” which I used several times over the years. I am talking 30 years ago, my daughter is now 30 years old. Glad you made it through all this and Bravo on how you held up and managed it all, Ady has a great set of parents and is a very lucky girl. And just so you know, my daughter feels like she had a very privileged life and is grateful for all experiences in her life with all of our travels. XXOO

I’m so very sorry this happened. I hope your daughter is (or has) healing well from the attack. The issue is in Morocco health care system is not supported by citizens. While in UK government force it citizen to pay extra taxes which is how NHS is funded via their National Insurance tax. In the other hand Moroccans does not pay a single penny to hospitals, hence why healthcare is limited because it’s supported by government pocket money and not the citizens

Wow guys that was crazy! I’m so glad you got everything sorted eventually, but flipping heck what a bonkers situation. The main point is (obviously) that Ady and James are physically ok and healing now.
We had a similar situation in Portugal when we visited a farm we were invited to on Instagram near Tomar. We arrived and it wasn’t really what we thought it was going to be but the farms and their children were nice so we thought we’d stay the night. Our daughter who was 5 was then bitten on the head by their German Shepard ☹️ She had teeth marks on her forehead by her hairline, and under her jaw - it had fit her head in its mouth pretty much. We spent the evening trying to find a pharmacist and then they said we needed to visit the hospital.
I’ve got to say hospital was amazing! A&E with no one in it, no queues, no drunks or worse. And immaculately kept, the doctor spoke English and she was incredible.
It’s a nightmare you had to go through this as it was easy to see how distressing it was for you. I hope the rest of your journey is still adventurous and exciting but safe and a bit more chilled ✌️

Vaccination against diphtheria (D), tetanus (T) and pertussis (P) are part of the basic vaccinations started during the first months of life followed by a booster dose in the second year of life, one between 4 and 7 years old, then one between 11 and 15 years old.
Precautions had to be taken before going anywhere.

Dear James & Sarah, I feel your pain and the inconveniece 😢😢😢
It's unusual for domestic cats to bite someone, may be Ady was a baby and the cat was very dangerous.
Vaccine is a must, you could contact your embassy for more ingormation, in Casablanca there is a center for these treatements called Pasteur center, and there many vaccines for dogs and cats for sure.
Best recovery to you James, Sarah and the adorable Ady, we feel your pain, and I hope this experience did not let bad memories of Morocco and Moroccans for your journey in Morocco.
    Best regards.

So glad to hear that you guys are doing ok. We were worried about you. This must have been an emotionally draining experience, especially that it happened in a foreign country with a language barrier.
The docs here in the US have told me that tetanus shots are good for up to 10 years. So, your biggest worry was getting the rabies shot because stray cats and dogs could carry it, and you managed to get the shot. You guys are street smart!
I'm originally from Fez... you have to know how to navigate the health care system over there in order to get prompt and adequate medical care, which could be a challenge for foreigners.
As stressful as this was, a few years from now, you'd be laughing about it. It's a bummer, though, that you didn't get to explore Fez. It's the oldest city in Morocco, and it has so much herritage.

    • @TheWholeWorldorNothing
      @TheWholeWorldorNothing  Рік тому

Thank you, yes we think that in time we’ll be able to look back on it differently, it was definitely emotionally draining as you say. We’re all good now thanks and would love to go back to Fes in the future to actually see it, we’ve heard so many great things about it! ❤️

I'm sorry for what happened to your family. we wish a prompt recovery to our lovely Ady, we are very sad.
But that has nothing to do with having a negative impression about Morocco. there are animals everywhere in the world and you can't control them. Australia for example is full of deadly creatures, and you can die at any second but still people go there.
if I go to the Uk and get attacked by a bird I won't have a negative impression of the country, it's just a misfortune.

Sorry for your troubles. That was bit of bad luck to happen on the weekend in a foreign place plus lack of language and advice which could have been misunderstood.
From my experience when I camped over nest of fire antes at 1AM in the middle of nowhere. I got bitten everywhere and I was in terrible pain. I drove to the nearest town (Agadir) I got advice and met one gentleman who accompanied me to a clinic rather than public hospital , I got seen straight away and didn't need to look for chemists and off course thanks to the insurance, I got sorted in first clinic I walked into around 2:30 AM.
GLAD ye got all sorted and soon it will be good grand dad life lived story to the grand children 😅

Sorry to inform you something of paramount important about Francophonie specialty in Morocco. Moroccan is not only a French speaking country, but it is a country English has been purposely and politically marginalized! Simply because there are a set of a bilingual french speaking countries and even that English is not marginalized: Algeria, Mauritania, Tunisia, Linoleum, Belgium and Switzerland..
Before 1990, English has always been taught 5 years before acceding to university, and ESP, scientific and technical or business English has always been taught in all different studies, and during along university years! After this date, 1990, where many world changes occurred: The end of cold wear, beginning of globalization.. all countries have switched from 7-8 to 12-14 years of English teaching before acceding to university. And even these foresaid set of countries (bilingual french speaking of) have increased from 5 to 7-8 e.i. from beginning of middle school. And their students still learn business English during their studies.
In Morocco, we waited 16 years for a small little change to occur! switching from 3 to online 4 years 😢. And ESP, professional English, is not being taught yet! (No English at different branches of studies). This is a peculiar situation in the world 😥. We could understand such fact If Morocco was an Eastern country. If it marginalized the language of Western... While Morocco is :
    - The first country which recognized USA
    - The first economical European partnership for decades
    - Is a capitalist country
    - had always played with great powers during centeries diplomatically speaking..
    So what's the intrigue?
In fact, Morocco is a sheer francophone forteresse 😢.
They are not more 3 or 4 countries all over the world where English is taught only 3 or 4 years before acceding to university: Morocco, Guinea Conakry, RDC of Congo, and before that was Centre Africa. And even Guinea and RDC CONGO have lately increased their number of English teaching years up to 7-8 years.
Result : They aren't more than 3 or 4 countries where university teachers can't speak English 😮..
