Twenty-two years ago, the leader of Morocco made his first visit to the White House as crown prince.
He came with his father who ruled Morocco for 38 years.
On Tuesday, President Clinton welcomed King Mohammed VI to the White House.
The 36-year-old leader of the North African nation was greeted with drum rolls, trumpet fanfare and a 21-gun salute on a bright, sunny day on the South Lawn.
The young king took power in July on the death of his father, King Hassan II.
Clinton and his wife, Hillary, cut short a trip to fly to Morocco for the funeral, a gesture that Mohammed VI said he would always remember.
With the first lady on the campaign trail in New York, Chelsea Clinton, home from college, took her mother's place at the formal welcoming ceremony.
It was the first time that Chelsea, 20, played the stand-in at a state arrival.
She seemed poised and confident as she shook hands with the king and touched cheeks with his sister, Princess Lalla Meryem.
President Clinton hailed Morocco's new king as part of the new generation of leaders in the Middle East, saying he had distinguished himself by his courage and conviction.
Clinton said King Mohammed the Sixth had touched the hearts of his people, since taking office last year after the death of his father.
The president noted U-S and Morocco had a long history of friendship - dating back to the U-S revolution.
In his speech, the 36-year-old monarch stressed the importance of Africa, saying the world had a moral obligation to put what he called the "stricken" continent back on road to peace and progress.
He also said he would continue the work of his father in helping to facilitate the peace process in the Middle East.
The king ended the day as guest of honour at a state dinner at the White House.
Hillary Rodham Clinton had returned in time for the occasion.
She wore a traditional Moroccan takchita that the king had given her earlier in the day for the occasion.
The gold and white brocade floor-length gown was almost identical to the one worn by the princess.
In an effusive toast to the young king, the President Bill Clinton announced the formation of a scholarship fund in the memory of Mohammed's father that would allow Moroccan students to study in United States.
Mohammed then praised the president for leading the way in the Middle East peace process and said he was "following with great interest" American initiatives in Africa.
Mohammed, a Muslim, drank water at the toast as Clinton drank wine.
