Today I learned that medieval hoods look much, much bigger than I expected when they're drawn on fabric. And that cats are exactly as helpful as toddlers when you try to sew things.
Bless you, Bran! I love the eighty bajillion buttons on everything! A .pdf would probably be greatly appreciated by the community, but personally, I draft my own patterns. My partner watched this with me and loved the delicate way you lifted Bran's legs to trace under them.
I honestly have come to really enjoy the types of patterns that just show me the shape of the garment and the seams and then tell me how to draft my own pattern. I especially find medieval clothes to be excellent for this as the tailoring is minimal and feels a bit like "babys first drafting forays" Aaaand in also just. Not really into the old crepe paper cutout patterns I had to work with in school. 🤷 I like a little everyday geometry!
I like early medieval clothing for the same reasons, and also that there is next to no fabric waste if you do it properly. When I'm dropping serious money on wool and linen, I want as little as possible to end up in the bin. The buttons on this hood are genius because they can be made from a square-ish scrap and self-stuffed.
@@rachelboersma-plug9482 oh yeah for sure! My first garment was a project of providence. Found exactly 1.6m of wool and got two discounts on it (store promo and last of bolt) and with some piecing I managed to get a man's kirtle AND a skjöldehamns hood out of it! I believe the spillage amounted to an a5 square in triangles that were going to be gussets but ended up a bit too small. I'm keeping them though as you never know when you might need small woolen triangles!
@@rachelboersma-plug9482 Not a bad idea! not a bad idea at all... i did have to make the tunic with a shoulder seam (modern wool is so delighfully broad it's just more economic to split it in half) so it would certainly help to reinforce the split into the neckhole there

The Skjoldehamn hood is an interesting one, since it’s a lot more tight-fitting than the one shown here, and instead of rolling up the front edge when you want better side vision you tie the braids behind your head to pull the opening open.
@@ragnkja The Skjoldehamn hood is interesting for so many reasons - is it even Norse? It's really popular all the same because it's so quick and easy to make. I made my son an oversized one out of linen, and it did a wonderful job protecting him from the Australian summer sun at a recent festival.

So cozy! I’m glad your friend likes it. (Hopefully) Quick question: the long tail off the hood, was that purely cosmetic? I don’t remember seeing it on your other hood (but I could totally be misremembering). Is it hollow to stuff hair down if you’re keeping it long/down? This was fun and educational with cozy kitty content. Thank you! Oh and PS I absolutely love your music selection, especially the song when you were moving from wool to duplicating your pattern and gores on the linen. Total jam (is that what the kids are saying nowadays?? Lol Idk but love it)
That’s the liripipe and there’s some discussion about whether it’s fashionable or practical. I’ve had friends say that using it to tie to a belt or to hang to dry makes life easier. Hair is generally not put down it just because if long, it’s already in another updo.
