- Hunter x Hunter features some of the most compelling characters in all of anime, and in this video I talk about some of my favorite villains from the 2011 anime series.

Yeah, I know "The Little Buddha" isn't exactly the most accurate portrayal of Buddhism or Buddhist beliefs, but it was the best thing I could think of to use as footage. Plus, y'know, Keanu Reeves :^)

Despite Gon's flaws, he's such a fascinating protagonist. He shows the damage caused by absent parents and negligent adults. The saddest thing is how quickly he imitates the behavior of others he looks up to. Example: Kurapika's vengeance and how he negotiated hostages. Gon does this with Komugi later on. Another interesting thing is Kurapika and Gon both grew up in isolated communities.
Whoa yeah, I never realized how Gon was influenced by the people around him. Makes sense since he's an impressionable kid.
It genuinely pains me to see how little views this video has.

@@PrasoonDwivedi08 Thanks man, as much as I'd love to cover Berserk, I don't think there's a whole lot I can add to the conversation at the moment. HOWEVER, I do have an idea for a video that I definitely want to do in the future which features Berserk.
The fact that they are called Chimera ANTS probably foreshadows that the CA are mere ants in the dark continent, which makes me wonder: What is the tiger in the Dark Continent?
Man you're really good at analysis!! To be honest Gon was always a pretty grey character, at least to me, he's a normal kid in a dark world; but I never noticed the similarities between him and Hisoka, that actually makes a lot of sense.
Speaking about the "name" scene I think it makes sense since the undoing of the chimera ants was its human ego. Rather than being insightful and patient Meruems desire to know his name falls into Neteros trap.

As for you mentioning the manga, as a warning: its a little rough looking compared to the anime because of time/health constraints. Also the anime does tell the story pretty much page for page, except for a minor part of the Killua retrieval arc in regards to the big door, chapter 1, 102, 203, and 204. The rest of the differences are just in presentation of dialogue and violence. Also, keep up the good videos.
I've seen some of the more notorious panels from the manga and I honestly don't mind the inconsistency; it's totally understandable considering Togashi's health. I'm looking forward to experiencing the story again with the manga some time in the future, especially after seeing some of the amazing artwork, and it'll be cool to see how Togashi's artstyle changes over time. (The uncensored violence is a nice bonus too). Thanks man, I appreciate the well thought out comment
It's honestly kind of crazy how Togashi's distinct style still shines through in some of the rougher drawings
There's also the kite scene in the beginning of the mangá. About the inconsistency, someone can argue that's a fair trade to have the highs that the art can reach in the Manga

This changed my perspective of Meruim completely, I completely forgot about how much he changed. Thanks for this video.
Meruem is amazing since we can see his entire character arc in the Chimera Ant arc. We can see him develop from a narrow-minded one dimensional character to something incredibly nuanced. And for the reason why Meruem fights Netero over his name? It's like you said, a lot of parallels can be drawn between him and Siddhartha (because both follow the path to enlightenment, Siddhartha for the reason of humanity and Meruem for his self identity). Siddhartha doesn't simply end his journey after one enlightenments, no he goes through several before finally reaching inner peace. Meruem is much the same, and while he understands his role on Earth as a king, he still struggles with his self identity, what is his own desires separate from those forced upon him.
Hishoka is as you said the complete opposite. He isn't the main antagonist, but rather he is an agent of chaos that is so commonly missing in shounen manga and manga in general. SO many manga introduce characters that are either blatantly for or against the protagonist. A new more powerful antagonist, new friend/comrade that will teach or aid the main character, scummy characters that want to take advantage, pathetic mobs that need saving. And yet Hishoka is none of that. He is a multifaceted individual fully self contained within his character. He needs not be influenced by the protagonist or the plot, he doesn't need his backstory revealed. He simply decides for himself what he desires and what he will do to achieve those desires. And through this, he is the walking enigma everyone must keep an eye on as the plot continues, because you simply don't know if he will let story wrap up or change the script entirely.
Beautifully said, I don't think I've *ever* seen someone sum up Meruem and Hisoka as eloquently as you just did. Any more of that and i'll be out of a job >__>

I would love if you covered Berserk. I consider it to be the best written manga ever, and it was my inspiration to pursue the medium. It really is everything Manga is capable of being.
I love Berserk, but I'm not sure that I have much to say about it that hasn't been said already. It's been talked about for such a long time that I doubt I'd be able to really add anything substantial to the conversation; but if I have something particular to say about any future chapters, I'd love to make a video on it.

omfg i enjoy your videos SO SO SO much!!! mureum... hisoka... i can see why they'll show up in a video named "The Genius Villains of Hunter x Hunter", but in no way was i expecting gon, and shit, you made perfect sense!!! how the literal f did i not see gon having no qualms befriending an assassin who has killed innocents while preaching against that sin to chrollo??? how did i not see that gon, the paragon of all that's good in the show, even when killing pitou, was fully prepared to kill komugi??? and by gods, i LOVE how you showed the subversion of the villain and anti-villain troupes through mureum vs gon character development. it's whack, it makes perfect sense, and i love to see it. middle ground hisoka is also absolutely delightful cuz yea he's a pedophile sure he is a criminal and i take pedophilia very seriously and i utterly condemn it but i also really, really like hisoka and you're right, it's funny when he does it for some reason 😭 like he hasn't done anything per se, but it's offensive enough, but even then it didn't make for a tacky and insensitive display when he's around. i just love how his morals are all over the place, and he's not super strong or anything, but he catches everyone's attention like the sigma male gigachad he is. delightful video! i love it!!

Yeah dude I love Berserk, it's one of my favorite manga! I also really like the 1997 anime
Chimera ant arc is top 3 arcs in all of anime.
That closing but had me wondering how someone who's morality is their ambition would fair. Like rather than someone who believes in their morality to the insane anything goes level the others take their ambitions.
Sidartha lets go of his social and familial expectations and finds a materialistically simple but spiritually rich way of living, it's a story about a man born into privilege and wealth giving up that luxury to find moral balance and inner peace. I don't see much of that in Mereum for most of his story, while he is less antagonistic after his time with Komugi he never moves beyond his instinct he just adopts a slightly more nuanced view of the world and how he will meet the expectation of his existence. If Mereum had transcended and denied his instinct he would be more akin to Sidartha, in fact many of the ants do manage to achieve this by finding their own purpose and balance beyond what they were born to do. Mereum's downfall comes about because he fails to understand and recognise this choice until it is too late.
Fair enough, while I do think Siddhartha and Meruem have some similarities, they definitely aren't 1 to 1 with each other. I find it more tragic than anything that Meruem just could not see himself as anything besides the king of the world. While Siddhartha was simply born into royalty in the political sense, Meruem was quite literally born as the biological king of his species. Being a ruler is literally written into Meruem's biology and mentality from birth.
Meruem's path toward enlightenment mirrors Siddhartha's desire to understand the world around him, but due to Meruem's inherent nature, their parallels ended there.
Meruem does move on from his role as king at the very end ,though.
After he gets " restored " from the physical damage of the bomb,but realises that he's going to die from its poison, he pretty much decides that he just wants to spend his last moments with komugi even if he has to bow down to do so,expectations from his imperial guards and the rest of the chimeras be damned; in his last moments he prioritises his desires as an individual and throws away his identity as king; it was pretty late in the game and he was on death door, sure, but he did do it in the end.
Something I just realized. Hisoka is always a villain but is only an antagonist for the first 2 arcs. The phantom troupe are always villains but are only antagonists for the third arc. Meruem is an antagonist from his birth to death but is only a villain until he develops and starts to respect humans.

My problem with Chimera Ant ark was when the show tried to make me feel bad for Meruem getting nuked.
This guy organized the conveyer belt murder of 495 000 people in order to make the remaining 5000 people into an army. By the point your kill count reaches six digits, your motivations are to be taken with a spoon of salt. And he was about to multiply that number several times! And his beliefs in the fight with Netero weren't ironclad. He's like a few months old, he just changed his mind once, how is he gonna change it when he learns some other thing, like the fact that humans maybe aren't big fans of losing what they earned with hard work just to be equal to people who have less (hi, IRL communism, I live where it happened).
He talks like he has the right to decide whatever because he's just better, but he was proven wrong. Just like a human was better at a board game than he, humans also made a better weapon than he had. Boom, humanity wins, bye.

hisoka isnt a pedophile he acts like one I know it might sound contradictory but what I mean bu that is that togashi leaves that aspect ambiguous in order to make his character even more disturbing.

I'm kind of half joking when I call Hisoka a p3do, because on the one hand, I get that he gets h0rny from strong opponents and that's just part of his character, but like c'mon there was that scene where he was staring at Gon and Killua's bottoms lol
As for long shows, I freaking LOVE Jojo's, but I don't think I'll ever touch One-Piece. The reason I'm able to enjoy HxH and Jojo's even though they're long is because they're broken up into arcs that feel extremely distinct from eachother; different tones, narratives, characters, etc. They constantly change and keep things fresh. However (and please, tell me if I'm wrong about this) with series like One-Piece, you're pretty much following the same cast of mostly static characters throughout the entire journey. Plus, One-Piece is astronomically longer than Jojo's and HxH, so yeah there's that too.

@@SchnozMeister well when it comes to cast you're partialy correct tho even though most of the main cast doesnt get much development as a person each of them develops as a crew member. Tho we dont follow the same characters all the time there are some arcs where we follow only a part of the crew duh theres even a prison break arc where luffy teams up with former villains to escape. on top of that the story introduces new crew members and dozens of side characters that appear throughout the story and some get development comparable to the main cast.
And lastly you said that you enjoyed HxH and Jojo because they're broken up into parts. Dont worry its exactly the same with one piece you can break the story up into sagas and the sagas into arcs where each of them has its own themes and the story makes it very clear when the arc or saga begins or ends mainly because we travel throughout different islands in one piece world and each island is an arc of its own
and dont worry about the lenght because the reality of being a one piece fan is that once one catches up he will say its too short 😂
