As a young 18 year old growing up in Nashville I had the please of doing many gigs with your Dad Rex Peer. What a great player and an even better guy. He was always the nicest cat!!!
My mom and dad left on the second row ! Was 1 year old at that time and my dad was crazy about Benny Goodman. My mom just recently stumbled on this footage. Miss my dad, he learned me so much ! Footage taken in 1958 at the Brussels World Fair.
One of our colleagues often has referred to Rex Peer as "the tastiest trombone player in the Solar System." I agree, and it's such a treat to see him soloing in his tuxedo with the great BG's orchestra, the same year I started trombone lessons with him in Atlantic, Iowa. :-)
With all due respect to Count Basie, it seems that every Benny Goodman rendition of One O'clock Jump swings more than anyone else's !! This is no exception. Roy Burnes is one of the greatest, and certainly most underrated, drummers ever. Thanks for posting, you have a most enjoyable collection.
Agreed, Todd. And, for my money the best BG rendition ever is the one I first heard as a teenager in 1955 in Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert album.
That's my dad! The skinny trumpeter next to the drummer. And John Frosk is next to him.
…..and Roy Burns on drums swings!

That's my dad, Rex Peer center Trombone. Miss him so much.
Cynthia my dad Bill Hodges spoke very highly of Rex. Great vintage clip.
Cynthia, did you know there is a small town near the northeast of Belgium called Peer? I used to work near there in the early 90's.
Cynthia, My dad loved your dad. He looks 12 in this video.
i played several gigs with Rex - such a good player and great guy.

An outstanding video here. I wish there was more bands like this.

Sounds like heresy.
Jimmy Dorsey is in there pitching too. A standard stands up to varying treatment.
Wow! Incredible music! This is absolutely fantastic.
nice tenor solo by zoot sims
Tremendo. Como me hubiera gustado vivir en esa época para verlos en vivo
….the jazz pianist? Wow
The Carnegie Hall version is so much better to me.
Aj
Mm
Who’s the trumpet soloist?
Taft Jordan is the trumpet soloist.
Great piece. One O'clock Jump is less of a tune than a mostly organized jam session.
