In an interview Stephen Fry said that he'd seen many actresses play the role of The Queen but that none were better than Miranda Richardson as Queen Elizabeth.
Baldrick has a fair bit of cunning in the first series, a little left in series two, and then starts to decline in wits (and ascend in comedy) in the last two series.
Of all the actresses who played Elizabeth I, Miranda Richardson is my favourite. Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren, Judy Dench and Bette Davis eat your hearts out.

It took 2 hours to put less than edited 30 minutes in the can, which is moving fast as you have to include technical setups (blocking and light checks, etc.) in that remaining 90 minutes, and the union crew is not exactly overly obliging if things are running long.
I love the childishness, craziness, silliness and emotion of her. She's so funny. There was a woman at my college who acted like this, one minuet she's all happy, the next she's in a psychotic bizarre rage. She's such a good character and one of my all time favourites in a comedy like this. Just the way she speaks and acts with such emotion and flamboyance. Definitely the best character in the programme. Marinda Richardson is such a good performer.
I can only imagine how long it took to record one half hour show with writing this superb and the actors constantly bursting into laughter trying to get the lines out. Particularly when dealing with a slip of a girl with absolute power. Blabbing on way to the block. Priceless
Trivia; Sir Walter Raleigh was played by Simon “Arthur Dent” Jones , and Captain Rum (not seen in this clip) was played by the immortal and infamous Tom Baker (the Fourth Doctor)
This episode contains one of the greatest lines in comedy history. Raleigh: Why around the hope the rain beats down so hard it makes your head bleed. Blackadder: So some sort of hat is probably in order.
As an Aussie I always thought it was hilarious that the paradise they went to where their captain was eaten by cannibals and they brought back a “stick” was clearly Australia
Loved Raleigh's face when she said that "He blubbed on his way to the block". It might have happened that way too. He eventually went to the block in 1618 during the reign of Elizabeth's heir, James I, 15 years after her death.
The second incarnation of Baldrick was easily my favourite. The moments where he and Bladders were on the same page, and Baldrick actually managed to keep up with Bladders’ wit (‘Well I chopped his head off, that usually does the trick’) are among my favourites in the series.
+Marteen Lake I like 2, 3, 4. 3 was with Hugh Laurie as prince, and I did like it. 4 with Hugh as Georgina and Rik Mayall as Flashhart were hilarious, also Stephen Fry! Rowan Atkins always a pleasure as Blackadder. Didn't really relate to Mr. Bean compared with Blackadder, but younger crowd unfamiliar with Blackadder like Mr. Bean.
@MumblingMickey sorry, but Elizabeth was NOT bald. Many history books I've read on her - 14 at last count - talked of her having long greyish red hair under her wigs. It's Hollywood that protrayed her as being bald.
@rwos14 dunno about that... if you consider that painters usually give a monarch a 'flattering' look then you still have to say Elizabeth was a bit of a car chaser! Plus she was bald (like most Elizabethan nobility). My guess is the reason she never married was all the men she could marry were too dangerous, and all the ones she wanted to marry weren't noble. She also might have been infertile OR this could have been a rumor that stopped suitors. Either way she was a brilliant leader.
It’s hilarious that Blackadder was gone for over 2 years, and survived being killed and eaten, only to almost die by the queen being insane. Luckily Baldrick was there to save them. Showing how much this version of the character is more resourceful than his counter parts.
I remember when I saw the first episode of this season for the first time when it was repeated on BBC2 in 1998, and loving Miranda Richardson's Queenie, and being really disappointed at the end of the episode, because I thought she was a one off character, and we wouldn't see her again. Imagine my delight when the next episode was shown the following week.
I always loved Queenie and Edmund's relationship.

The best ever Queen Elizabeth l
A historian on the Rest is History podcast said its probably the most accurate representation of Elizabeth I.
I've just realised how much Liz Truss sounds like her... 😱
Perhaps Una Stubbs in Aunt Sally mode?
Completely BONKERS!!
She was absolutely terrifying, the spoilt child tyrant but played for laughs.

Nobody combined insanity and hotness like Miranda Richardson.
Yeah, she'd therefore have been superb as Commander Makara, if there'd been a live-action Star Fleet.
Kate Williams is very similar... even has that slight speech impediment (cant say "W" words)

Helena Bonham Carter can't hold a candle to her.

Emma Thompson was brilliant in Upstart Crow, a sort of Blackadder relative show.

It's rare after the first series, but it's nice to see Baldrick have a stroke of genius at the last minute.
Might be his first and only actual cunning plan.
that was how Blackadder 4 ended. Baldrick had a cunning plan but didn't get the chance to try it. Or tell it.
That seasons Baldrick was a gap filler between the first outing's brainy Baldrick & the later dunderhead ones. The Baldrick here was a mix of both.
