I'm not sure P40 Pro could be so much better than my P30 Pro. Maybe next gen 2021 Huawei phone could be a quantum leap. Anyway I don't change phones every year, so... it's fine.
@@evil_xsimon3639 I won't buy anymore a phone without Android, unless someday Huawei will be able to mount again Google Services or thir Harmony OS will prove to be a serious contender of Android and iOS. Anyway, having already a P30 Pro, honestly I'm going to wait another generation of phones or two, before to change mine.
Mobile phone photography has come a long way. One of my favourite images which I actually framed and hung in my living room was shot from a Samsung Galaxy S8+. It is as you say it...it absolutely stunin'.
Have had the P20 Pro for nearly 2 years and been fairly happy with it. Just wished the Pro mode setting allowed the zoom function to work but other than that been solid and battery life especially has been great
Totally agree. I have been using the P20 pro for about 1.5 year, and happy with the battery life, the photo I take with it and happy with the whole phone in general. I'd get another Huawei phone anytime. I'd rather have China spying on me than Facebook and google and the whole silicon valley.
I only sold my Nokia Lumia 1020 last year. The 40MP DNG files from that were amazing. Unfortunately the processor was so slow that it took an age to take shot. Some of my favourite photos were taken with it though.
I watched this video a few weeks ago before I bought my P40 Pro (which arrived a few days ago) and I wish I had paid more attention of your dismissal of the raw files around 8:00, and in particular, your attempt to get rid of the green tint around 8:14 where you wiggled the mouse pointer around the tint slider, which was already maxed out at the magenta side. I now understand that wiggle of frustration a little more. I feel that if this video wasn't promoted by Huawei then you would have mentioned that all the raw files have a green tint. The camera uses a RYYB sensor, instead of RGB and essentially has twice the amount of "green" pixels (captured as yellow), which (I assume) is the reason all the raw files have a massive green tint to them. I feel that you definitely glossed over the fact that the raw files are essentially unusable, although you did slightly kind of lean that way. I think it's a bit devious for Huawei to claim that the phone will shoot 50MP raw files, but they don't tell you that they are basically a gimmick. Maybe Lightroom, in the future, will put out a better profile for this phone, or maybe increase the range of their tint slider, or something, but at the moment raw files are useless. Still, the phone does shoot great jpegs, but I did feel a little bit hard done by when I opened all my lovely raw files in Lightroom only to find they were useless, and that nowhere in any of the reviews I watched was it mentioned. Reviewers generally just say "it shoots raw" but never bother to give any more info than that.
for me its no surprise that Lightroom isn’t prepared to process pictures from phone sensors. the processing in phones today is so much more sophiicated, and of course specialised. its callled computational photography for a reason
While the green tint issue is real, I find that I can get rid of the issue by correcting the tint and the saturation of the greens. The raw files from the P40 Pro have a very natural look to them (in terms of detail).
You have to try the Silky Water mode under Light Painting. It lets you shoot long exposure jpg images at day without using any filters, and the results are great. You need to mount the phone on a tripod though.
Really impressive that this phones beats the Samsung S20 Ultra that costs around 400 euros more (shows that the 108 megapixel is just a number and the the P40 Pro takes better pictures with 50 megapixels), so happy I bought it, no problem with apps, just get alternative apps and use shortcuts to websites :)
I purchased the P30 pro after a fellow photographer friend showed me some of the images he had taken with it. Superb! My Sony RX 100 series cameras now see little use as the p30 pro is of course always with me.
@Bobby Brady "Far better" is a stretch if you consider the high end phone cameras from the past couple years. Also, a mobile phone has huge, high resolution (and in some cases, even HDR capable) viewfinder - the display! Compact cameras are a mostly unnecessary product these days
Lot of haters on here for the Huawei. I have the P30 and the main benefit is that it is always on me, so I always have a camera. I do struggle with some of the modes, but the AI is amazing. OOH I have a Fuji XT-2 and an Intrepid 4x5 both of which I used today. The P30 also acts like viewfinder, exposure meter, DOF calculator, Shoot planner, route planner too for my other cameras. So it is something of a photographic Swiss Army knife.
As impressed as I am with newer smartphone cameras, I'd still go for a point n shoot if I was worried about zooming. My 8 year old point n shoot still works when I get nostalgic....which isn't very often. My iPhone camera gets used almost daily for reference pics. Awesome image.
Just wondering if you might use this as your vlogging camera too when out on your adventures....just thinking that in selfie mode, you’d have a large screen to help frame yourself & the background that you’re going to shoot I have had little interest in mobile phones, I have an emergency pay as you go one, that was given to me by a friend around 2013, and it was his wife’s cast-off three or so cameras before her latest, so I don’t know where that puts it, maybe 2008 ish?
Thomas Heaton ....pity, I was watching the video and thinking about your efforts in other videos to keep weight down for your hikes, and saw this phone as providing you with mobile mapping capability, plus the potential as a blogging cam, and maybe even as a back up camera to your mirrorless/dslr in a worst case scenario.
Wow! Thomas that beach photo beautiful. I must say you live in a beautiful area and thank you so so much for still producing quality content, it's very much appreciated. Can't wait to see another classic camper van adventure. Hope you and the wife are well and keep safe.
Phone photo quality now a day is absolutely stunning and you don’t need shoot raw at all as the jpeg are already beautiful . Phones have much more versatility than cameras and most of the time you can’t see much difference especially if photos are just for social media purposes. I want see phones technology where will arrive on the next couple of years
Pretty much agree with most of what you say. Previous user of P20P, M20P and nowadays P30P. What I do not agree with is obsolence of RAW. Albeit 50MPix is not really 50MPix of dataworth - it is a QBayer sensor so one has to be very carefull when processing the DNG (artifacts). For most situations 12MBit file have plenty of detail, however for high demands (I am retired PRO photog) you cannot beat the DNG just because of rendering (sometimes digi-look, sometimes watercoloring in smooth areas, sometimes oversharpening etc. Whatever HUA and the rest done so far, the rendering, smoothness of transitions between detail and out of focus areas and quality of Denoising (meant areas with details vs areas without details especially transitions) is just not there. And DNG (to an extent even 50MPix JPG) can eliminate this. Obviously you have to use as best as possible tools for managing this as there is no AI help. Nevertheless until going beyond 800ISO the quality of output (using Topaz AI Denoise and Topaz AI sharpen) is so good that my 20MPix mirrorless is having a hard time to beat it. This is not gonna happen with OOC JPG. Well being so demanding - you might say- use real camera - but no, I cannot take my Panny mirrorless everywhere unlike phone - precisely as you said. What holds me back with this camera is lack of Google services and lack of true macro as with P30P. Because 20MPix macros or closeups frome let´s say 10cms and using DNG are truly amazing. The same has to be said about 125mm lens when used in DNG mode - outstanding - no match for OOC JPG. But - although you have OIS here and there depending on mode you use - you do not have it in PRO mode (P30P) and that sucks. Is it different with P40P? You have something like EOIS but that takes time to take a shot and you can easily miss the moment. And that is another problem - as HUA cameras can take 6FPs with a buffer of around 100 pictures - and is something very important when you try shooting action. To cut the story - I am still tempted by this phone and had it Google Services I will probably switch immediately - until then P30P does as good for my needs and in autumn there will be M30P with new fluid lenses tech - so maybe wait is my best bet so far.

I am using the Huawei P30 Pro now for half a year. The image quality is also fantastic especially in low light situations. The funny thing is that I come to the same conclusion for the Pro Mode. After testing the Raw mode and comparing it to the jpeg, I thought I don't need the Pro Mode. Also the filter function - smooth water etc) produces good results. The phone doesn't replace my mirrorless but in fact it will replace my RX100.
I stopped taking photos for 10 years. I got fed up of lugging heavy cameras around. When I picked up an iPhone 3GS it was like a door had been opened and exciting sky had leapt in. It was pure joy to use and gave me new life and appreciation. Sadly the app that I found for the phone at the time is no longer available but there’s always the likes of Snapseed. If I ever am stuck in a rut and need a boost I always turn to a smartphone.
Thomas Heaton, you can also see from the infrared camera with an app called Night Vision by Lubos Vonasek. Works with my P30 Pro, terrible resolution but cool to see what the lens can see, also fun as it's true night vision.
No way. This phone, REALLY, can produced such quality? Your review wow me, bro. My 11 Pro Max can't match this phone. Plz, do, do the video review as well. Great review. I may get this phone, bro.
Huawei doesn't supply pixel binning raw files, so the raw files will have more read noise than the jpgs, no matter whether you downsample. Furthermore the dng files have rearranged the pixels artificially (which leads to artifacts and less detail) due to the different color filter array whereas pixel binning results in a traditional Bayer array.
8:10 The sensor has a different color filter, which leads to much less detail than Bayer sensors. They need to rearrange ("remosaic") the pixels artificially in order to get the Bayer array. This also leads to a lot of artifacts. Fuji's X-trans has a similar issue (Lightroom and Adobe's dng converter rearrange X-trans pixels artificially as far as I know). In Huawei's pixel binning mode the pixels don't need to be rearranged.
Great video Tom! After all the videos I've done about the S20 Ultra, I've gotten 1000s of comments and requests to do that phone, but since I don't have one, I can now defer them to this video! 😄 Also, I'm glad you have a nice beach area to get out and unwind a bit. Cheers from New Mexico!

I shot the supermoon like two days ago with my P30 Pro. It's insane what these puppies can do. I haven't used my Panasonic LX100 premium compact since the P20 Pro. Can't wait to upgrade to the P40 Pro+ in due time.
Thanks for the timely video Thomas, I too was wondering just how good these phones are. Earlier this week I pulled the trigger on a Realme 6, a 64mp wide angle & an 8mp ultra wide angle. Delivery is promised next week. Now I've seen your cracking images I can't wait to give it a go!
I'd lower my expectations. The Realme 6 is fine but it's a budget phone, while the P40 Pro is the best of the best. Also the software isn't quite as good. It's still a brilliant phone though, just don't expect results to be the same as in this video.
I pressed the subscribe button because I always have this idea that a printed image will always be better than images shown in any screen. You seem to look underwhelmed with the quality of the printed image so it made me rethink about the notion that "dedicated cameras like DSLR and Mirrorless cameras are nearing its end because of these advancements in mobile phone photography."
Did you try shooting people? For shooting people, which is a better choice between shooting with protriat mode or photo mode on p40 pro? Are there any differences?
Wasn't expecting to see my hometown on a review for the Huawei P40 Pro's camera. Definitely gave me a better idea and perspective of what it's capable of using familiar sights
The 50 megapixels aren’t true size megapixels like dslr megapixels, yes there’re 50 megapixels, but they’re crammed in microscopic photosites, which is how they get away with marketing bs to make you think that it takes photos like a 50 megapixel dslr
I'm sorry, but I don't think you understand the concept of pixels, or you're not getting your point across. There are no "true size megapixels". If you're referring to the size of the pixels that's fine. If you're referring to the bit depth of a pixel, that's fine. If you're referring to the overall noise a sensor produces, I get you. But don't treat "megapixel" as a measure of quality. Because it isn't and it never has been. It has always been a marketing term to trick you into buying the new and fancy model. And people should understand exactly what it means, to not be tricked into buying a shiny 50 megapixel phone thinking it will be as good as having a 12 megapixel APS-C or 35mm sensor. As always in life; size matters.
The best selling DSLR and mirrorless cameras are cheap APS-C cameras with a kit lens for something like 300-500€. I wouldn't be surprised if this phone can compete with them. It can't compete against expensive lenses and the versatility of system cameras. So the massage to the masses is, before you buy a Canon 2000d with one lens that remains always on the camera, you might be better off with this.
Ive been a fan of Huawei phones for a long time because of the cameras. I have the P20 Pro now and am itching to get my hands on the P40 p[to upgrade asap.
It's the same b.s. with photo scanners claiming to have 6.400 dpi or more - while in reality there's no more detail to be found beyond 1900-2000 dpi. But with interpolation they blow up the image and give inflated numbers.
@@BlackParade01 It does not matter as long as the actual level of detail is way below 50mpx. It might as well have a 5000000 MP sensor or a 5 gagillion MP sensor. As long as the images look mushy and have 0 detail it's just a blown up inflated number without any merit.
It's not laser, it's something more like a "lidar". It's not just about shooting a ray of light to measure a distance, it's about creating a 3D map of the scene.
I know you didn't cover video, but lack of camera2API support in my current Huawei phone means I'm going to be looking at other phones when I upgrade next january unless the P40 has it.
In fact, phones these days are a whole lot more expensive than those far more superior used cameras waiting to be loved again. My first foray to dedicated camera was a used Nikon D300(US$ 180) and absolutely love it. Just recently got a used Fujifilm X100S for US$ 140 and I can't wait to give it a spin.

A few times, to my great suprise, the H-p30pro really shined and I could still document night events without the tripod... As you say, it doesnt substitute dsrl/mirrorless but it surely is a complement..

I use a P30 Pro and the only time I ever use it over the Lumix G9 is when I don't have my Lumix. That's the only reason to use it.
I have the same phone, great camera, best I've used but not comparible to even my ricoh grii though.
Great camera for a phone but not a great camera.
Hey p30 pro user plz tell me about this camera i heard everbody that its camera is amazing superb this is really ....it could beat Samsung s20 plz tell me
Is it any good for indoor real estate foto? Thanks
Awesome video! Could you tell me what photo printer you have?
If i'm not wrong, normally there's night mode in these phones, you should try it out with a small tripod or something, will give a different photo experiences.
Since my Ultra burnt itself up from the inside out, I'm considering the P40 pro+ with the larger Telephoto lens
Nice to see you out with Monty. It would only be my tool of choice in a pinch. Probably fine for social media and scouting. Thanks for the bonus upload. Stay safe! Rock on!
A Friday night video cup of tea time 👍
Have Huawei mate 20 X love it since I have it, never change back to my iPhone XS and galaxy note 9
Useful information and of course amazing photos! Thank you for the video Thomas. You too stay safe.
Thank you for fixing the horizon it was driving me nuts right from the beginning :D
Does it blur the foreground as well as the background? That’s what a real DSLR does in high aperture.
It's still a brilliant phone though, just don't expect results to be the same as in this video.
realme 6 uses a low tier samsung sensor which take blown out photos
Very good review thx
Which printer do you have?
Also für mich hat Huawei einfach die Beste Kamera der Welt👌🏼 ich freue mich auch schon Tierisch auf das Mate 40 Pro❤️❤️❤️
I can't wait for the huawei Mate40, which will be my next phone
i have it and just ordered the mate 40 pro+
great channel, has a cool vibe
The 50 megapixels aren’t true size megapixels like dslr megapixels, yes there’re 50 megapixels, but they’re crammed in microscopic photosites, which is how they get away with marketing bs to make you think that it takes photos like a 50 megapixel dslr
I mean obviously, its less than a 1in sensor. Just like full frame vs aps-c
As always in life; size matters.
mplabs23 thank you, yes, I mean compared to what is typically in a dslr
The best selling DSLR and mirrorless cameras are cheap APS-C cameras with a kit lens for something like 300-500€. I wouldn't be surprised if this phone can compete with them. It can't compete against expensive lenses and the versatility of system cameras. So the massage to the masses is, before you buy a Canon 2000d with one lens that remains always on the camera, you might be better off with this.
Oh, this channel also turned into infomercials, times are hard!
beast.... huawei is the best... i bought mine 760 euros... looking to buy the plus
Please does this same test with the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra
Awesome camera work here in all
You just pop that beast out of pocket
huawei and xiaomi are the best
Great video
Ive been a fan of Huawei phones for a long time because of the cameras. I have the P20 Pro now and am itching to get my hands on the P40 p[to upgrade asap.
Infrared focus assist has been used on Canon cameras since long time ago. And I believe other DSLR brands use the same technique as well.
Its a Time of flight sensor, DSLR's do not have this..
@@Lectrosoul DSLR cameras have RGB+IR sensors for the same purpose which gives the camera PDAF. And ToF can't even come close to that.
@@eniscc you are mistaken if you believe that pdaf in dslrs have anywhere near the capabilities Tof sensors in modern smartphones
New subscriber cause of this video!🙂
can you give a review of your Fuji Camera? I am about to buy that Xt30 but would love to hear how you like your Fuji camera.
Does it compare to pixel 4 xl computational photography? Thinking about switching to this one over the pixel.
Does using a tripod greatly increase clarity/sharpness at night with P40 Pro?
(in night mode)
Wow 😍
It's the same b.s. with photo scanners claiming to have 6.400 dpi or more - while in reality there's no more detail to be found beyond 1900-2000 dpi. But with interpolation they blow up the image and give inflated numbers.
The P40 Pro has an actual 50MP sensor. But there are already phones with 108MP sensors.
@@BlackParade01 It does not matter as long as the actual level of detail is way below 50mpx. It might as well have a 5000000 MP sensor or a 5 gagillion MP sensor. As long as the images look mushy and have 0 detail it's just a blown up inflated number without any merit.
have you done a drop test for the phone?
Do you know about the 108 mp Samsung/Xiaomi camera? And also Samsung is making 150 and 600mp sensor
The huawei p40 pro sensor is physically larger, even with less megapixels the sensor is better.

Awesome review!
Hi is you're book been taken off pre order?
I would love to see you try astrophotography with this phone !
Yeah!
The Lg G6 has laser guided focusing as well. Its awesome
It's not laser, it's something more like a "lidar". It's not just about shooting a ray of light to measure a distance, it's about creating a 3D map of the scene.
Great review
I know you didn't cover video, but lack of camera2API support in my current Huawei phone means I'm going to be looking at other phones when I upgrade next january unless the P40 has it.
just buy a phone with google. Huawei is done with all their spying apps.
@@TheChameleon2008 they have spying apps? Which ones and please give some sort of evidence
@@TheChameleon2008 Google is a complete spying operating system
@@majg9141 True, but i rather have 1 spying then 2 or more. I always hated Huawei with their tencent spyware on my P20 pro. No way to turn it off.
Yes! Photography i can finally do...oh wait....still too expensive..
I'm getting a lot of color noise when shooting in Pro in RAW. For some reason there is no noise in 'regular' photo mode
what printer You use?
I am so happy you printed it to give your final verdict! Now I am going to listen to Driftwood by Travis since you mentioned that word🙂
it's means we don't need camera with standard single shot. right?
99.9 percent I shoot pictures in pro mode end in RAW with my phone.
We do like it raw here
Great phone👍
Did you try using the Lightroom Mobile app to take any photos?
Hii bro how are you?? I. Have one question who is best camera smart phone 2020 Huawei p40 pro plus, Samsung S20 ultra, one plus 8T, pixel 5 who is best please share your opinion
Is it Sunday already?
I have the p30pro and I get amazed everytime over the nightmode. As a m43 shooter, there are times where it falls short or where for whatever reason Im forced to leave the tripod home.
A few times, to my great suprise, the H-p30pro really shined and I could still document night events without the tripod...
As you say, it doesnt substitute dsrl/mirrorless but it surely is a complement..
P30 pro night mode is how plz tell me and thier also camera performance
On the point and shoot front, trying out a Ricoh GR-3 or a Fuji X100 series for landscape work would be interesting to see.
Definitely light enough to make a difference in your camera bag, plus a truly superb lens.
Was wondering what handphone have you been using so that i know what are you expectation level are against the huawei p40 pro?
What camera did you use to record this video?
