Great video, back in the 80s there were a couple of us that switched from fishing perch commercially with 2 rods 4 hooks with bait to fishing 1 rod with grubs. Grubs normally catch those small to medium size fish 3/4 to a pound which IMO was the best way to keep the fishery sustainable because we weren't taking those big breeders. The grub technique actually evolved from using a 4in motor oil curly tail worm rigged with two hooks. I fished grubs on a double rig for years because being commercial it was all about numbers and efficiency. In fact my buddy and I were working on a long line conveyer belt type setup that involved a couple tire rims placed out in the hole at low tide that we could work together and split the catch. It looked really good on paper but anyways....😂
@@Hook2Cook Ha! I did write a history book there!😂 Your surfperch vids make me long for those days spent living in sync with the tides. I'm sure your father and I did cross paths if he fished the Oceano/Guadalupe beaches. Looking forward to seeing some striper action soon, they are around. A friend got a 24' last week.👍
Love the video and the music score and footage! It was a pleasure meeting you again today. I’m glad your channel is doing well. It is some of the best content on UA-cam! Keep fishing! Come see me in Tennessee anytime. Greg
I’ve always ran a double rig from 1979 till today …. Works great , multiple times a year you will get doubles buddy .. sorry would have said something sooner but didn’t know Cali rules … fishing Washington and Oregon … love watching though 👍
Been thinking about this rig for 2 weeks. Going to try it this weekend for bass using zman slam shady on 3/0 1/8oz belly weighted ewg hooks so they don’t float up too fast. Never seen anyone do it until this video. Thanks for sharing.
I used double Carolina rigs a lot the last couple years and have doubled up a few times. I’ll put a plastic paddletail or swirltail grub on the end and either a sand crab or Gulp sandworm on the upper hook to see what they’re biting on. That said I find the double rig much more likely to tangle up in wild or rough surf. Not always good to leave out there for long, keep a steady reel-in to prevent the twisting/tangling up.
Edward, always the innovator! (try that fishgum) I am going to try this next time I hit the surf, I have had success with the little paddle tail baits, I tip the hook with a pea size of fishgum and the redtails love it!
You can fish them either way, I enjoy casting to find the crappie, then I float the bait. Guys here in Bodega Bay are using slip bobbers for lings, cabbies and perch, from the cliffs. @@Hook2Cook
Wonder if it would work to set it up the a double soft bead set up for steel head. One leader 2 hook set up. Second hook is just tied to first hook. 🤷 maybe I will try it this week.
Not sure if you mentioned this in any previous videos but how would you compare your double Carolina rig with a High Low rig? I rarely get tangled up on the High Low rig. Sometimes I still double up with the High Low rig using a live sandcrab (if available) and a sandworm.
hey i get extra different gauge washers to adjust vertical throw on my penns, your van staal might have some too. worth a look before you ship it off again.
The beauty of the egg weight is the fish can pull line and you feel it through the sinker. Depending on how it’s rigged, the torpedo might make bites harder to detect.
The wheelerking has been throwing the double Carolina rig except attaches the split rig on the back swivel and attaches a offset hook Texas rigged… With both hooks offset and T-rigged it can get doubled uped and snag proof (95% 😂) Now that I’m saying it out loud, I guess it’s 1/2 Carolina 1/2 Texas rigged not double Carolina 🍻

I used that rig today on the pier after watching your video. It worked great, no double up but I caught two surf perch. Great video!

Haha thanks for the detailed history lesson! My dad was commercial as well. You probably crossed paths with him. It’s fun to experiment

Thanks again!
Just saw a video of a guy on double Carolina rig from 11 years ago. Doesn’t matter though I saw yours first lol. Subbed
EDWARD, COULD YOU TRY LIVE BAIT ON THE DOUBLE Carolina rig? Try sand crabs and possibly try cut Macarel like your dad uses.
I’ve always ran a double rig from 1979 till today …. Works great , multiple times a year you will get doubles buddy .. sorry would have said something sooner but didn’t know Cali rules … fishing Washington and Oregon … love watching though 👍
Nice video! I will definitely try this setup next time I target perch 👍

Thanks for the input Rich! It doesn’t tangle nearly as much as I thought it would!

I usually do a double dropper loop when fishing for BSP, have gotten doubled several times
That's what I was thinking, like a double crappie rig...
Kinda like a bait n wait setup more than retrieving?
You can fish them either way, I enjoy casting to find the crappie, then I float the bait. Guys here in Bodega Bay are using slip bobbers for lings, cabbies and perch, from the cliffs. @@Hook2Cook
Use a one ounce torpedo weight and retrieve like a Carolina
@@Hook2Cookyes, I have hooked up doubled multiple times on that set up

Used to use a double rig like that for trout. One hook had a floating bait on it and the other had a worm or salmon eggs.
We use that rig a lot in P.R. And you double almost on every cast.
I catch doubles on Carolina rig multiple times
Nice! I was just thinking about doing this the next time I get out a few days ago! You expected more tangles or less than imagined?
I expected more and worse tangles.
Not sure if you mentioned this in any previous videos but how would you compare your double Carolina rig with a High Low rig? I rarely get tangled up on the High Low rig. Sometimes I still double up with the High Low rig using a live sandcrab (if available) and a sandworm.

Thanks for the offer but I sent it in and got it handled already. It’s perfect now
Hi, I like your videos and please!! Can you share places to go fishing. I live at south Orange County. Thank you !!
Have you tried a dropper loop part way on your leader for a second bait? I may try that.
Maybe it is better to use a dropper loop? Might tangle with high power waves
I’ve used the donkey rig at the surf before, but not with a 3-way swivel like your rig. Do you use a loop knot, as well?
I have a question about using a torpedo sinker instead of the egg sinker. Will it work the same?
The beauty of the egg weight is the fish can pull line and you feel it through the sinker. Depending on how it’s rigged, the torpedo might make bites harder to detect.
@@Hook2Cook thank you makes much better sense.
I fish 2 jigs but with the weight at the bottom.
Nice . I should of stayed another day when I was there. But no I decided to go home and go to work the next day.. 😂
Next time! Yea this was the Wednesday trip
where was this at?

This was interesting maybe use a spreader bar instead of a three way swivel that way the baits are further apart as well as distances
link for your preferred spreader bar?
@@VINCEGOESFISHING Luhr Jensen spreader bars should be available in most shops
I'm not seeing the wave power link you mentioned at the beginning of the video. Did I miss it?
Oh I’m sorry, it’s www.surf-forecast.com
Been doing this for a long time , with gulp sand worms
Nice video. That VR50's given you some issues over the years. 😢
Tell me about it, but at the same time, I fish so much. Turns out The company that did the service on it forgot to put the washers in. Really sucks.
was this video taken wednesday? :)
Yes :)
I have tried it before, but somehow the rig tangle up a lot
Were you using the owner 3 way swivels?
👊👊👊🤙🤙🤙
