I love your playing and your talent. Your lessons are very valuable even for pianists who are not advanced. This lesson particularly was especially wanted, and I will study it often. You're showing some of the most mysterious techniques in jazz. Bravo!
@@blaineamartin No, that's not what you should do. Be careful with how you practice and don't harm your hands in the process. Playing the piano well is more about improving your coordination and accuracy. It's not about stretching your fingers. Most people can easily stretch their fingers far enough to play most piano music with little effort. So you don't need to do stretching exercises or anything like that, and doing so could be quite dangerous for your fingers and, ironically, leave you unable to play because of injury.
You're such a boss, I love seeing a new video in my notifications. Any chance you can do some comping based stuff? Just general backing behind a soloist
You are fantastic! I so appreciate the time and effort put in to transcribe, play, and video these licks! Yes the 5 chord could be called V7altered, and is really relatable to the notes in a C#dim chord using the dim scale tones as you mentioned. Thank you again!
I really appreciate videos like this because it helps me learn more about Jazz Piano! I especially like how you put the sheet music on the video so I can watch and follow in real time. And the behind the scenes in the back is very entertaining and provides us an interesting glimpse of the work you have to put in to create these wonderful videos :D One of my new favorite channels, thank you. Will keep coming back :)
Outstanding. Very useful to me. This is exactly what I'm working on. I'm a drummer, not really a piano player and playing fast is profoundly difficult. I'm making progress but it's a brutal journey.
Im just started to see your videos and im in love with your channel and the way you play! Im studing piano and your videos help a lot! Thanks for this channel!
This is unacceptably incredible for the amount of views/subscribers you have. All your videos give unbelievably useful insight. Keeping them coming. Thank you.
This was the sort of jazz I was exposed to when I was still a high school student. Regrettably, I hated it with a passion since I was so accustomed to only listening to and performing classical music which had 'easier' harmonies and a distinct melody that I could relate to. Fast forward 12 years later, I simply LOVE listening to and playing technical licks such as these after having studied jazz piano in college. I actually play through all Jimin's II-V-I and I-VI-II-V exercises as a warm-up before I move on to the heavy classical stuff. I hope she offers online lessons in the future.
@@malifraz8945 start with understanding basic theory and chord progressions!! tons of tutorials now on youtube. it'll make a lot more sense than just to start practicing intensely by brute force. easier on your brain
@@malifraz8945 learn the licks, break them down into small chunks, practice those chunks in different modes, scale degrees, keys etc. Then you just use these chunks when you improvise! Practice to songs you like (does not have to be a jazzstandard) and use these vocab chunks. You can also split them up into chord type vocabulary so you can apply them in any setting if you hear the appropriate chord. Also try to sing the lick first and then play it. This further helps to develop the connection with your inner mind when hearing melodies. From there learn theory etc. Check out a channel from Jens larsen, he really is an incredible teacher who is able to explain these things easily. Btw this advice I gave is something which is very rarely talked about. There arent many who talk about how to learn improvisation effectively or for example to play what you hear in your mind. This is one step towards that, so understand the value of the things above.

I love these fantastic licks! Keeps me busy for hours and hours practicing, too.. I just wish you would have played through each one just once ( and only once ) very slowly so I could see your fingerings because that is where a lot of people can mess up the point of these etudes. Thank you again for all you do.
There are many cuts! The ones I noticed were between the licks around 2:18, 2:31, 2:58, 3:46, 3:54, 4:10, 4:21, and 5:04. I'm still outrageously impressed by Jimin, but I wanted people to know even she didn't do this all in one take!

All diminished 7 in this video should be changed to dominant 7 b9! Sorry I got confused T.T
diminished 7 - whole half diminished scale | dominant 7 b9 - half whole diminished scale

These licks are SO TASTY!!! And your playing is so even and beautiful. Very well-articulated phrases!

I thought diminished chords written as Go7 was the whole half, as opposed to a G7b913 which is half whole? Or can Go7 be either?
oh my gosh you are right haha thank you for letting me know!!! I'll write in comment section thanks!!!
Mindblowing
altered 9ths means half whole, but if there is any 5th alteration then best to play altered over it
Is G7b913 the same as the altered scale/7th mode of melodic minor?
@@ericchen6803 No, G7(b9/13) usually refers to dim HW but in melodic minor you have a b13, so it would need to be G7(b9/b13).
