This is a dedicated video to introduce you to
the EXOTIC sound of the Phrygian Mode

The following scale diagrams
will help you start improvisation
immediately along with the backing track
Lets start by playing the first half of the scale
it's called 'Jins' in Arabic maqam system
Jens usually has the unique flavor of the scale
and it has 4 notes
Play fret 2,3,5 on A then 1 on D string
this is jins Kurd, you will get its taste right away
The unique taste of the Phrygian Mode
comes from the 2nd interval , it is minor here
Unlike the Aeolian mode and it is the only
difference.
Now memorize the pattern on strings A,D,G
3 notes, 3 notes then 2 notes with the octave
Lets now play that same pattern from fret 2 position
after we move to fret 7. Copy that pattern to this new
group of strings; E,A,D.
Start by playing a simple phrase that matches the feel
of the drum beat and rhythm. Use 2 or 3 notes first to
come up with a phrase then try to play it in the previous
position starting on fret 2
When you look at the scale diagrams in this video, you will
notice that the root note is in a different color.
This aims to quickly and easily help you locate the root
note all over the fretboard.
Visualize the group of notes that follow the root note
and try to play a phrase using them, then try to play the
same in different areas to cover the entire fretboard

Hi, first of all, thank you for the great backing track. I spent a really good time playing over it.
Can we basically use G Major/E minor scale over this backing track right? B would be the mediant in G Major and the Fifth degree in E minor so every note within those scales will work. Also in case we want to use the Harmonic minor scale we just need to play D# to get that "exotic" feel. Is that correct? What do you think? I still have some problems understanding modes and if someone can explain me I would really appreciate it.
You are right. If you think modes, G Ionian (major scale) is the relative parent to E Aeolian and B Phrygian. Since we are in harmonic minor scope here, B phrygian becomes phrygian dominant, exactly the same like phrygian with a raised 3rd.

Yep and although we should try not to think of the G major scale when thinking B Phrygian- it REALLY helps to get you up and running quickly. After that, it is relatively easy to see how ordinary Phrygian really is.
I think this scale is used by Blackmore on stargazer song by rainbow
I find it fun to use b Phrygian on the bm7 chord, but then switch to c Lydian on the cM7 chord.

You are right, Em is the parent scale and starting on B it gives you the fifth mode.
