Vintage Psychiatric Interview: Hysteria, Neurosis, Pseudopregnancy in a Tired Mother

- Subtitled in English. This patient seen is seeking psychiatric care, although it appears that most of her complains are physical. The case, however, is presented as an example of hysterical neurosis, and even she herself attributes her condition to "nerves"
My mother looked pregnant when she had ovarian cancer. It was leaking fluid into her abdomen. I hope this woman discovered her diagnosis, whatever that may have been, and was cured
The way she described it, it is not ascites hence not ovarian ca, likely pseudocyesis
She eventually gave birth to a beautiful baby queef 💨 😅
What sort of doctor assumes a woman is pregnant just because her abdomen is swollen. Or diagnosis her with "pseudo-pregnancy" caused by hysteria, when clearly she knows and tells them she is NOT pregnant. She's not mentally ill, she's sick. It sounds like an intestinal blockage (constipation, bloating, weight loss, pain, etc.). The low blood pressure, weight loss and fainting are because her digestive problems made eating impossible.
Ibs symptoms.
Gastroparesis is thought to be caused by damage to the vagus nerve. (High likelihood of adverse childhood events, and poor diet). The nervous system is so weakened that digestion slows down, causing the contents of the stomach and bowel to ferment and swell up rapidly after eating. It is not a mental illness, or a fake pregnancy. It is painful, embarrasing at times, and does tend to happen more often to people with diabetes or blood sugar issues. It is a chronic health condition that can be managed with a special diet, stress reduction, regular rest, and avoiding cold /raw foods. It isn't terribly common, and if treated incorrectly will lead to vitamin and mineral imbalances that lead to more health issues. Poor woman. Misdiagnosis affects so many people.... What a shame.
Thyroid! It began after a pregnancy!! This woman should be examined by an endocrinologist, not a psychiatrist!!!! SO SAD!!!!!!!

It is always like that for women. When it happened I had often nausea in the morning, that I couldn't even go to work. My boss asked if I did a pregnancy test in an ironic manner. It was actually my liver enzymes high due to my undiagnosed thyroid disorder. And when I get to the hospital abdominal pain, they asked me if I am pregnant. Anytime you mention belly pain or nausea, it's automatically pregnancy.
Sounds like this poor woman had a serious GI or reproductive disorder and no one took her pain seriously. There's definitely a real thing going on that requires treatment , not "pseudo-pregnancy" or hysteria
Endocrine disorder- thyroid! Yes, agreed very very sad for her children who were deprived of her care because these morons these monsters these demons entrusted to diagnose and heal her had their own evil agendas

What an absolutely lovely Lady. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her despite it being in negative medical circumstances. I sincerely hope that She went from strength to strength and found pure happiness. Blessings ❤

This looks to me like a case of severe malnourishment, caused by stress or by an eating disorder. The repeated fainting at home, extreme weight loss, anemia, the frequent use of laxatives and the abdominal swelling all seem to point to this. She's not delusional, thinking she's pregnant. She knows she's not pregnant. This seems like a woman with a bad eating disorder who's trying to control her life by controlling what she eats.

So sad. She is probably suffering from post partum cardiomyopathy - heart failure. She has all the symptoms; weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite, anxiety, confusion and dizziness etc.

Thinking the same thing. Sounds more physiological than psychological. I can't speak for France but in that time women's symptoms (unless they were obvious) were considered as "all in their head" in the US. We've learned a lot in medicine since.
I was recently diagnoses with heart failure, this woman has nearly all my symptoms except shortness of breath. smh

“Hysteria” was an old way of not taking women seriously or looking into their conditions- whatever this woman had, I hope she survived it. It was physical- not “hysteria”
Yes, it looks like an auto immune disease due to stress and hormonal imbalance... It often begins after a pregnancy... It's quiet sad how doctors used to treat women...

Well, it's obvious now, not back then. We don't know = probably "nerves". Not like we can do anything about it, even if we knew what is the cause. It's like wondering why Roman Empire used horses. They could've used planes! Oh, they're so dumb 2 thousand years ago.

This seems to be possibly from the 1950s. Even if I take 1955, it makes this atleast 66 years old. This lady even if was 30 years then is 96 years if alive, naturally possible to an optimist but unlikely.. it really very sad to hear about her childhood days possibly in the WW2 era. But it's a kind of surreal experience to watch this, its evidence of people like us who lived in what is our space, had their own views of the world and their own moments of joy and sorrow. The world has changed so much and the public memory is too short lived. It won't be long before we too shall pass over and forgotten

Hysteria was the blanket term that covered ptsd, anxiety, adhd, postpartum depression, sexual frustration and panic attacks.
It was interesting that hysteria was a term used almost exclusively for women’s mental health issues and was quite a dismissive and derogatory term. Men suffering the same issues would be termed as ‘manic’ or other. It was not manly to be called hysterical.

Hysteria is derived from the Latin word for uterus which is hyster. That is why all of these conditions apply to only women.
What was worse was that, up until the 1970’s, in a time when most women were uneducated and ignorant as to their sexuality, many physicians would use a vibrating tool to induce orgasms in their female patients in the name of relieving stress and mental pressure. Pure sexual abuse and grooming. Thankfully this practice was exposed and stopped in modern medical practice

This interview was devastating to watch. Our minds affect our physicality as we know know. I dont know if or what the hospital did to help her . Ive heard of hysterical pregnancy but only stories told in a sensational way. I pray she is at peace now , live or dead. Im going to look into this now . I am interested in what we do currently about thos situation. I work in geriatrics. So i havent seen this syndome in my work. Thank you gor this information
Women still get diagnosed with mental conditions when their health is failing.
I was experiencing anaphylaxis after telling the doctor I was allergic to the medication. I went to the E.R. because I knew I was dying. I told the doctor I was in pain and he said I didn't know what pain was because I had no children. He told me to stop being so dramatic. I got a steroid shot a few hours later, and he sent me on my way. The allergic reaction severely damaged my kidneys because they took too long to treat it. Considering I was covered in hives, I still can't believe the doctor said I was being dramatic. I have no trust for doctors now.
When I was complaining of pain in several places. Dr. wrote in my report: It is not related to musculoskeletal problems. However my wrist was broken, and according to my PT I had thoracic outlet syndrome, which was never properly investigated and my fracture never healed. And to my excruciating period pain they told: Sometimes it's more painful and maybe fibromyalgia. It is like this even today!
Could have an abdominal hernia BUT we must remember the time period she was living in...all our options for testing AND treating have become significantly advanced with or without the internet AND most people could not afford it even had it been available.
Poor lady hope she wasn't in the hospital to long and got better soon to be back with her husband and kids
At the end of interview, She says she was in hospital for 11 years!
It's still happening, they just call it BPD. The narcissystem will always blame the victim.
I am going to throw in the idea of a uterine tumor that has caused a growth in the intestines causing a partial blockage. The cancer is eating her up and that is why she is exhausted. Also may have POTS.
Bloating goes down is painful gas buildup from not farting. I think you could be right or could be heart or chronic anemia

I used to have the same symptomes. That is IBS & Gluten intolerancy!
I think it is a little more serious, I think it's a heart problem heart faliure I had the same symptoms weakness fatigue, bloating from water my body could not get rid of and anemia.
I hope she had been able to see a doctor not to be left in that place. The physical illness is causing anxiety, loss of appetite ect.
It’s certainly interesting to hear from folks who’ve experienced similar symptoms ~ being able to openly share information across the globe helps provide more & more options & solutions. Also we don’t have to feel like we’re alone / the only one like this & this can reduce or possibly eliminate anxiety, yeah. 😀
I also have food intolerances and the same symptoms. Other pathologies may also be associated. These intolerances, which are now called food inflammation, can lead to suffering from autoimmune diseases.

I’m just starting to watch this, why does it sound like me? Two years ago I struggled to stay over 90 pounds now I’m 80 and can’t gain. Bad adrenal insufficiency anemia I have so many issues and Covid hasn’t made it easy to get the care I need. My teeth need to be done too!

Whatever you do don't let the medical industry or anyone for that matter gaslight you into believing that you are mentally ill instead of physically ill, as they are doing to this woman in this video. Yes, thyroid and adrenal can cause many mental symptoms but that does not mean that you need talk therapy or any of their stupid mental health drugs, when what you really need is hope for your thyroid or adrenal glands or both whichever are malfunctioning 😮😢
Teeth problems don't happen overnight and many teeth conditions can be hereditary/genetic...
She fell on her face and yes, the broken teeth needed to be replaced BUT, dentistry has come a long way and many countries aren't cosmetically concerned like the US are even back then and it was still a ways away before public drinking water became fluoridated as well water had itsown set of problems i regards to oral health care...the days of this time period did not have many options of dental care so the options were to remove & replace hence the need for many products we no longer have use for as those products were kept in the medicine cabinet (it's even odd to have a medicine cabinet in our current times)
It was simply a hormone imbalance…like insulin resistance, pre diabetes , especially peri menopause

I when ppl have too many carbs they can bloat because it take lots of water to digest carbs
After pregnancy lactose intolerance is common it effects the gut causing both constipation and diarrhea depending on what dairy they have and if it was cheese on pizza can cause constipation, milk can cause lots and lots of gas then diarrhea
They didn’t have to pull all of her teeth making it even more difficult and embarrassing and stressful to eat.
She needed to see a real doctor
No hysteria here in this interview, seems she suffered from a post partum version of an eating disorder, poor woman she shouldve been hospitalized, given saline, some sort of anti anxiety medication to get her sleeping and eating again then a panel of tests to find out whats happening with her stomach/intestines, i dont see much wrong with this womans mind, if anything is off its due to her exhaustion of mind and body....she needs that tension relieved to restart because her body isnt letting go and expelling it....she is just staying wound up. This is a person with a small hospital stay and a simple treatment could be back to normal in a week or two.
This is what i went through before I got diagnosed with celiac disease. Although the correlation of her symptoms to stress also tell me it could be FND. I wonder what became of this woman.
This is gluten resistence (celiac) I have the same issues with my belly...🙄

@@anticlickbait I met someone that was celiac. She seemed to be in constant discomfort and just a trace amount of gluten getting into her system would make her swell up and feel bloated.

Definitely a medical issue! They probably had no idea what it was & were passing her on.
Celiac testing would of changed her life.
Yes wheat was killing her.
The symptoms she describes are those of iron deficiency anemia caused by peptic ulcer disease. The bloating likely was caused by either gastric outlet obstruction from the ulceration or else simply paralytic illius from iron deficiency. She was probably always mildly anemic but decompansation likely occured due to blood loss during child birth.
A differential diagnosis would include pernicious anemia from vit B12 deficiency. This symptoms of which are due to nerve damage to cns and pns, causing amoung other things, neuropsychiatric symptoms as well as thing like bloating and constipation due to involvement of the autonomic nervous system.

@3:33 : the missing name is "stomatologie de La Salpêtrière". The hospital of La Salpêtrière has been famous for being a prison for prostitutes and ill women in the past centuries, and then a testing ground for Charcot (under whom Freud studied) to research hysteria through hypnosis.

I had a very, very dear cousin who insisted she was expecting a child, but I did not believe her, but I listened patiently, because she was such a good friend when we were raising our children....by the way, she never gave birth to a child, and she didn't gain any weigh, she was tiny, but she wore maternity clothes and there was an angelic glow about her. ..she was newly married and I just assumed she was looking forward to new life like any new bride....

I'm having exactly what she is having...I was diagnosed with abdominal migraines, but she and I have some similarities with childhood trama. The migraine meds help, but I know it's my nerves, they've been shot since I was 3.

From 170 lbs to 85 makes me think cancer, or anorexia. As per her belly inflating ascites from cancer causes that. Thats why its sometimes flat and other times bloated. Back then husbands could instituionalize women who got *sickly* Why are all these old interviews calling women hysterical ugh😢
