Single-band WiFi is a major weakness in an apartment where the 802.11b/g/n channels are crowded with lots of signals from neighbors. There were lots of buffering delays until I switched to a dual-band unit.
See if you can change control channels on your 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands on your router. I would suggest control channel 11 for 2.4 ghz and 161 for 5 ghz. Those two are typically less crowded in most areas and have much less interference as a result.
@@DatzBunz Modern routers should be capable of surveying networks in the vicinity and selecting the best channel for low interference automatically. Richard, I had the same issues with the Express model due to proximity of neighbors. However, a family member who lives in a free standing house had zero complaints with the Express. So, I recommend dual band models for apartment/townhouse and cheap model for free standing houses. Of course, the higher models have other advantages as explained in the video and may be worth it depending on user preferences.
From unanswered questions, below: Go to Roku's website, to "streaming players", select "compare" and pay attention to: Wireless + connectivity. NOTE: the wifi standards. Your devices and router wifi standards will matter. (is was mentioned in this video) Also read notes at the bottom of the "streaming players" page re: proper HDMI information. I hope this helps.
Nice and informative overview, Philip. You might have mentioned that you can add memory to the Ultra. Also, the remote allows you to set up shortcuts to two channels in addition to the four already on it (3 of which i don't even need). We love our Roku. Originally bought it at BJ's and could never have made an impulsive, take-a-chance better. We are currently on the Ultra. It is worth the $99 bucks.
I am very happy you did this today. Roku Express has no Bella or whistles, and needs a TV remote for volume, and on and off. I have the Premier, and recomend you get this one. If you don't have 4k, go Premier. Love it. Almost 2 years now, never will never go back to cable again !!!
Great video.. I'm a UK user who has all the Roku devices even the ones not sold in the UK viz. Ultra and Ultra LT. For 4K streaming which I do a lot of, I'd recommend using Ultra models as they have ethernet connections and provide the best streaming experience without buffering. With only a 80/20 broadband speed connection into my home, I have to make the most of it.
One thing you overlooked is the solid WiFi performance and range of the Streaming Stick Plus which from my testing is superior even to the Ultra. As an extra gig of RAM and the SS+ could be moved to the #1 position.
Oh thank you. I dropped cable tv a couple years ago and haven't replaced it with anything attached to my tv and I tell ya, it's not that fun watching Witcher on a little laptop :/ LOL really good, clear options for an older, less techy person. I appreciate this one for sure. Especially considering whether I would want something sitting out or hidden on the tv. Thumbs up, man!
huh? you left out the most importantly thing to most cord cutters. who cares if apps take seconds more to load? how did they compare STREAMING? which device has better wifi connection, which buffers less? which is more stable? there ya go, material for another video.
I've found out that the voice remote can be added to the Express to get the voice search and TV controls. And I would think this would work on the Premiere as well. Roku doesn't advertise that but it works.
Really appreciate the effort but all those numbers at the end just confused me more. So far from what I have seen all I know is $30 = bluray $40= 4k and hdr $50= 4k and hdr $100= 4k, hdr plus fast load time, ethernet cable and sd card for extra storage
Hey there, haven't commented on one of these videos for a while. I have Apple TV(s), and Roku Ultras as my primary streamers. The Ultra for me is good so I can Hard wire, and eliminate wireless issues for the best performance. The Apple TVs are mainly for local streaming of my movie collection I've ripped to MKV, so I can watch them at full quality and don't have to worry about transcoding. Infuse for Apple TV is a great solution for that, I also have a Plex Pass, and love Plex, however with the Roku, it's hit or miss with codec support without transcoding, especially when it comes to audio. Either way I'm happy with both platforms because they complement each other very well. While this video isn't specific to this, want to mention I've added HD to my Amazon music unlimited subscription, since I also picked up an Echo studio. Music sounds extremely well through the studio, and my echo plus 2nd gen. The dot 3rd also sounds good, however the sound isn't as full, being it's the smallest device. Love catching up from time to time with these videos. Have a great day!
May I ask a question of you? The USB port was not mentioned here on the Ultra. Do you know if a hard drive can be plugged in, powered through the port and used with SPMC, or whatever, to play backed up movies? Thanks! Not sure I want to buy a second Nvidia Shield.
@@CaveWyatt I don't think there is enough power for a bus powered drive, but I can't speak for sure. I know USB flash drives work, and a hard drive may work via a Powered hub, with it's own power source. There again though, I can't speak for sure as I've never tried it. I have used flash drives, however since any media i would have on a flash drive / hard drive is on Plex and other sources from the computer, I usually just stream. I have the local bandwidth needed to stream the content I have at full quality. If you have an external hard drive with it's own AC power source, that will probably work, as long as it's formatted with a supported filesystem.
@@macinman Thanks! I’ve tried Plex and it was ok. I prefer the portability of the hard drive but, holy cow! I don’t think I’ve seen an externally powered hard drive since the ‘00’s! ☺️ I’ll keep searching and another Shield wouldn’t be that much more, I guess. Thanks, again!
@@CaveWyatt WD makes the Mybook and other models of powered external drives. Amazon sells a good selection of enclosures as does other vendors. Just get the size of 3.5" drive you want in capacity and buy an enclosure, and make your own. It will probably be cheaper than buying a pre built model. Just some thoughts.
@@macinman Yes, I’ve done that using OWC parts. I use WD...Passports, I think they were called (for Mac, HFS+ formatted so they’d work with Roku) and they don’t seem like power hogs. I’m reading in Roku support (I realized my 2011 Roku is still listed as my primary device!) about the potential power problems. For the extra $50 for the Shield, it may not be worth messing around with the Ultra. I have to go into town to the same Best Buy to get either one so maybe I should just go with what I know will work. I’ll check a few more places, obviously Best Buy and Sam’s aren’t open right now.

My 5 year old Roku boxes still work like the day they came out of the box. The only app that is no longer supported is Hulu which I dont have anyway. I see no need to upgrade just to save a few seconds on load time. I wont upgrade until my boxes dont work anymore.

This video doesn't mention the difference in wifi capabilities. The Express uses an older less powerful WiFi system versus the Stick which uses a more up to date WiFi system that supports higher speeds and greater distances. This could be a factor depending on how far your roku is from the router in your home.
Thank you very much for your review. Im planning to purchase my 1st Roku and need your recommendations. Can I plug a Hard Drive and use it the Roku as a media player that can support .mkv ? Appreciate your comments and more power to your channel.
do you have any thoughts on the new products that are releasing this month? Should I buy an older model on sale or wait a couple weeks for a slightly more expensive version? I'm looking at either the new express 4k+ or the streaming stick+.
