this mission epitomizes why i love halo 3's campaign. Its a combat sandbox. No other shooter just lets your ai teammates potentially go to town on your enemies while you stand back and enjoy the show. God dammit halo 3 is one of my all time favorites. Thanks for these vids Hokie, i used to apply the same ideas when i beat it on legendary. I wanna go back and do it all again. love you man

This is one of the handiest game walkthroughs I've ever used. The first time I ever finished this one on Legendary was a number of years ago on my RROD 360. It took two frustrating sessions to complete, and the Broken Path bit was a couple solid hours of teeth gnashing.
Your shooting gallery setup with the Marines at the bunker makes the firefight section so manageable that I finished the level in one sitting, in less than an hour. Major props Birdman!

Thanks to the MCC on PC, I'm finally playing Halo 3 and I just tried my first mission on Legendary. I chose T'savo Highway thinking it would be easier than others... Well I was very, VERY wrong about it apparently.
Still made it through, but the funniest thing is that I then came here to see how a pro deals with this mission and one of the very first things Hokie says is: "Unlike Halo 2, Jackal snipers are far less likely just to one-hit-kill you in a vehicle" which is exactly the first thing that happened to me as soon as I found the first two of them!

Tried the Quad-Rod Hog. You can do it and make it work, but you're really gonna miss that chain gun for the Roundabout, and even moreso for the two Brute Packs at the end. Saturating the air with Fuel Rod Missiles only accomplishes so much if the Brutes just evade them all.

Hey man, first off, thanks for your videos. Half a year ago when I started the MCC I never thought I'd be doing legendary campaigns. But I've now done 5, 4, reach, odst and partway through 3 on legendary thanks in huge part to your help. I don't always follow your tactics to the letter but they're always useful. In the hardest part of this mission (and the game) my marines wouldn't follow me from the broken bridge. And all the marines in the big area were dead already! It took me an hour just to crawl through the area on my own, eventually running for my life from the bunkers to the right side, pausing only to do a mental fuel rod wraith kill. Utterly horrific but wanted you to know it's entirely possible even if the game screws you! Keep it up mate anyway:)

I actually managed to get a scenario where I got the troop transport hog, warthog and all the marines alive on a playthrough For keeping the troop transport hog and warthog alive I didn’t get in the warthogs rather I just had them follow me and I consistently equipped them with fuel rod guns and beam rifles so I got the marines in the hogs, plus the marines on the broken path after doing everything in the video correctly and the marines that arrive with the pelican I also managed to get marines in a wraith, two in choppers, a full transport hog, and two regular hogs against the 8 choppers and the wraiths I ended up getting through the whole mission without any marine deaths or any of my deaths it was the most hilarious play through I had

  • @pixelpanache

    Hey Hokiebird,
I recently discovered your channel and I've replayed all the Halo games using your ideas. I especially like how you use the marines; I always try so hard to keep them alive in spite of all the efforts they make to get themselves killed.
Tsavo Highway is one of my favorite Halo levels because of the mix of vehicle and ground combat and the amazing siege section. Thanks to you, I've been experiencing the level in a whole new way.
I have done a few hilarious play-throughs of this level following your techniques as shown. The last play-through I wanted to see what I could do with the troop transport, after seeing how well it did on its own in your video.
I got through the first few few combat areas at the beginning by swapping back-and-forth between the transport and chain hogs. After I got it loaded up with marines toting beam rifles and a fuel rod, the troop transport really kicked ass. I tried hard to keep both warthogs alive all through the early sections but was never able to do that.
A huge advantage of the troop transport is that you can bring four marines with you to the Broken Path, where you meet two more as soon as you arrive. With a little pre-planning and some creative swapping, this gives you six heavily-armed allies at the beginning of that battle.
One reason I tried so hard to keep both hogs alive was to see if the second hog would follow me through the tunnel after the first chopper fight; that would be an extra three marines.
Even though the troop hog worked really well during the first brute chopper fight, I think that was because the choppers were distracted and the lines of sight were interrupted by obstacles like trucks and buildings. Even loaded up with fuel rod marines, they simply did not react quickly enough to fight off wraiths and choppers in the later portions of the level. I'd get behind a chopper and set up perfect shots for them and they simply wouldn't fire, or would fire too late. Often they didn't seem to notice a chopper unless we were getting shot at, even at point-blank range. After getting killed more than 50 times I gave up and swapped to the chain-gun hog, and finished it pretty quickly.
This was playing on Legendary. Perhaps it would have worked better on lesser difficulties.
Thanks again for your videos and for breathing new life into Halo for me.

I thought it was very clever of you to take full advantage of your marine allies, by giving them very powerful weapons they can use to support you to the maximum. I've always thought the marines were useless, but now I realized that if they are properly equipped with effective weaponry, they make a truly formidable ally in the game.

The Broken Path phantoms kind of remind me of a sequence in Gears of War 3. You clear out a mortar nest on a bridge and then, you notice enemy troop carriers in the distance. The carriers are basically giant blimps filled with a fictional gas that I can only assume is lighter than air and highly flammable because one of your squad mates says: “wow, a big, floating target filled with gas! I wonder what we can do.” You’re standing next to a bunch of mortar launchers when he says this.

The one positive thing - conceptually speaking - about Halo 5: Guardians was the allied commands function. That’s one thing I wished the Bungie games had. Allied firepower is such a staple of the Halo combat experience that it’s a shame when the player can’t use it to its full potential. Halo 3 obviously compensated for that by very cleverly designing the encounters but man, can you imagine how awesome it would be if your allies fired on targets you mark? Especially when you’re driving a warthog. Sometimes, my marines just don’t fire on the targets I want them to fire on even when they have a perfect angle.

Compare this 2007 game AI to a 2019 Call Of Duty Modern Warfare in which on Veteran the AI just stays behind walls and each enemy on the map shoots only at you, your team never shoots their rifle so it's 100v1 and once you take down everyone and advance the team advances too, but suddenly someone appears and they just pass through them without seeing or shooting the enemy and keep advancing, and of course the enemy doesn't shoot them it shoots you who are 100 meters away. And i don't wanna talk about the granade spawn lel, "how do we keep the players moving?" "let's just spawn 4 granades at their location each time they stop running for more than 5 seconds".
    Halo for ever

After over a dozen tries at the holdout section, I got a "perfect" run with 5 marines. Mortamer James, I was having trouble just like you. And I'm guessing its because we are having trouble with the flying brutes but I found a solution. Restart the mission from the beginning but DO NOT take the warthog with the chain-gun like Hokie suggests. Drive the transport hog yourself. The reason is that you will have 2 extra marines to help you out. I gave those 2 extra marines beam rifles. By the time I got to the big battle I had 6 marines with beam rifles and fuel rod cannons. The fun part was trying to get them all to jump the bridge. All off them made it except for 1 dumass with a beam rifle who fell off. But that extra fire power definitely paid off and it pretty much played out like Hokie shows in his guide.

***** If you're talking about a carrier hog with 2 ar's on board, i agree lol, but in this specific mission the carrier hog is godly

My first time seriously playing a Halo campaign on legendary. Have beaten most of the games on heroic no problems. Legendary forces you to get good. Anyways, this level. The part after you ditch the warthog and face all the brutes and the first wraith. My god. Took me 179 minutes to make it through that part but I killed every last fucking brute. That last brute death animation was soooooo satisfying. I died at least 30 times. All my marines were dead after the first wave. I didn't follow any guides. FINALLY found a spot behind a truck trailer where I could snipe them solo with a carbine and a battle rifle. Came to this guide after the fact to see how easy it couldve been. But I wanted to do it on my own first ha

That Wraith fight was so fucking hard. They don't give enough weapons I had to snipe all the brutes and then come in with a plasma pistol to destroy the wraith

Oh and the part in the beginning of the Storm level where you encounter wraith, anti-air wraith, some ghosts and maybe banshees was really painful as well even though with the sniper. I'm willing to see how did you cope with that.

Hmm seems I’ve done everything the hard way when watching this video 😂 I never think about arming my marines with better guns.

My god as much as I love this mission as Hokie does, the broken path holdout section is not fun if you’re marines don’t follow you. More often than not, I’ve seen it happen before where the four marines you had from the warthog and at the beginning of the broken path will not move up with you to the hill where the other marines are and will stay right where the phantom spawns and get obliterated by the brutes with brute shots as well the chieftain with the fuel rod gun. If you get a bad checkpoint at this part, there’s absolutely nothing you can do to keep those marines alive. I’ve also seen it before where the marines at the top of the hill will sometimes all of them are dead by the time you get there. It sucks that in my case it tends to happen a lot and I never really get to experience the awesome firepower

Did you notice the moment when when your marine ally shot two fuel rods at two choppers, with both hitting each one,and one shotting one of the choppers?
Because that is a good shot by your ally.

Man, Hokie, I can never get past the bunker area because every time my marines die even though I try an support the most in danger. But they end up dead way before the first phantom.

The roundabout in this level was the most infuriating part of my most recent play through of Halo3. I had the rocket hog and kept getting killed. Also I don’t think Halo 3 got vehicles completely right. Better than Halo 2 but the Master Chief should never die first when the vehicle takes fire. I watched my marines live for 5 seconds after I died in the warthog. I know it’s Legendary but come on!

13:37 nahhhh something happened in this section where all my fuel rod marines where in one spot and a fuel rod gun brute killed them all and the chekpoint was done JUST IN TIME WHEN THE MISSILE WAS LAUNCHED so yeah there was no way i could have saved them and the chekpoint always loaded when the missile was already launched at them

I found if your marines die hide behind the two huts at the hard bit. I camped there with grenades , carbine and a sniper i cleared them out in 2 tries but the other tactic is very quick too

  • @Hokiebird428
    @Hokiebird428  11 років тому

Actually, that's where you're wrong. Sniper Rifles aren't useless against vehicles, and a lot of times when the Marines carry them, they'll be able to shoot the driver, not just the vehicle. Ballistic weaponry such as the Warthog's chain gun and the Sniper Rifle have an interesting sort of "stun" effect on vehicles, and make it much easier to land Fuel Rod shots when the two are paired together.

  • @wisethought24

the way I usually do the roundabout, is I destroy everything except the wraith on the highway, then I'll let my marines drive the warthogs around to divert some of the focus from me as I climb up the hill and kill the brute on the plasma turret of the wraith then sneak up on it and jack it for myself. After that, you can drive it to the next area and blast the mortar repeatedly. the brutes wont stand a chance. Just my preference lol. On a side note, I've had this game for almost 8 years and NEVER knew about that sniper at the beginning of the broken path area you used to kill the captain with the fuel rod canon in the beginning lol your walkthroughs are so thorough. Much respect.
