Refractive index is a measure of how much light is bent, or refracted, when it enters a medium from another. It is a dimensionless quantity that describes the speed of light in a particular material compared to its speed in a vacuum. The refractive index (n) of a substance is typically denoted by the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum (c) to the speed of light in the material (v): n = c /v
The refractive index affects the angle at which light is bent as it passes through different materials. Higher refractive indices indicate slower light propagation in a medium, causing greater bending of light rays. Different substances have different refractive indices, and this property is often used in optics to design lenses, prisms, and other optical components.
The refractive index is also responsible for phenomena like dispersion, where different colors of light are bent by different amounts, leading to the separation of colors in a prism. The refractive index is an essential concept in optics and plays a crucial role in understanding how light interacts with various materials.

Sir n 21 is used when you have to do 1 with respect to 2 and we use n12 when we have to do 2 with respect to 1

Sir light bends because when light enters from one medium to other it changes the inter atomic and molecular arrangement of medium due to which arrangement of electric charges in the medium also changes. Hence we know electric charges are perpendicular to the conducting surface due to which light bends..

No , either it is your your board exam or any other exams .. they will don't give you the speed of light in water , air ,glass , vaccum etc just learn the speed of light in any other medium given in ncert ,you should remember it by your own!

B4 adding the one it was the refractive index of air with respect to water. Upon "adding the 1" (or in other words, the reciprocal), the statement now becomes the refractive index of water with respect to air.
the one is added to make sure that it is the refractive index of some medium (in this case, water) with respect to air. Since that's what 'refractive index' means in the first place
