Nice job Professor! I'd be scared stiff to tear into a RTR. BTW, it seems the large reel of tape is suffering from surface delamination. I read that guys have been baking the tapes to re-adhere the magnetic stuff to the tape. Old tapes will totally gunk up the rollers and heads.
This is dust- it’s been sitting around for a long time, the entire deck was covered. Yeh- I had a lot of mental back-and-forth about cracking this open. I always look for a service manual before grabbing the screwdrivers, but they don’t always show everything- the manual for my CT-F850 shows an easy disassembly, but none of the wires and cable routing. I really *don’t* like tape deck servicing…
