This is superior to the standing calf raise in my opinion. Once you get decently strong calves, the standing calf raises causes a lot of fatigue because of holding the load on your spine. The leg press loads entirely your calves without systematically fatigueing the rest of your body. Its like what the chest suppourted row is to the barbell row.
It depends on your machine and the length of your legs. Some machines safeties interfere with the range of motion. If you have the option of keeping the safeties engaged, please do 😀
You can maintain a slight bent but personally i feel the stretch better in my calves when i lock the knees. Make sure to focus and stay for 1 or 2 seconds on the eccentric motion.
We coach a soft lockout at the top of the exercise. This means never fully locking out the knee. There are some really scary videos of people locking out their knees on heavy leg presses and the knee going the wrong way.

BRB oiling that baby up
Thank You, Really Helped!
Hi there
It shouldn't be necessary (or wise) to release the safety on a leg press to do calf raises?

Wasn’t there a study that showed the upper part of the calves raise were not useful? Just the bottom stretched position mattered?
Do you bend your knees a bit or do you lock them?

@@SeriouslyStrongTrainingya i never lock for this reason and i've had mcl acl recontruction so i dont fully trust my left knee
I bend slightly because my knees don't like it when I lock them doing these calf raises
should knees be locked
It should never be locked
A little bend in legs would be safe
It isn't put pressure on our knees?
Keep the knees bent just slightly
Doesn't bending the knee shift most of the tension to the soleus?
Mine is 270 lbs (6x5)
How much is it now?
@@SeriouslyStrongTraining Just now 340 lbs
