For everyone that's super pumped about trying this tomorrow for the first time... take it easy! You will hardly feel any fatigue or soreness after workout, but the next day you'll be walking around like a senior citizen. Might even get worse the day after, and last up to 5 days. With slight tendonitis in the knee area. It's no joke! :D
I have terribly weak calves. Went and seen a physical therapist for a few issues i was having and he told me it was because of them, he gave me a few tips on how to stretch and strengthen them. Been doing them for about a week but no dice i dont feel anything in my calves and they just make toes hurt. Figured Jeff could help me out and tried this workout yesterday and the launching calf raise was one of the most painful muscle contractions I have ever felt, it irradiated all up through my hamstrings and up into my hips. Did about 20 seconds of this and couldnt handle anymore. Gonna keep working on this, cant wait! Thanks for improving my quality of life Jeff i'll buy you a protein shake if I ever run into ya.
Pascual Lucas i actually have huge claves, I do 250lbs calves raises on the vertical leg press for 12 reps! Notice that I only could do 185 lbs for 12 reps like 4 months ago and my calves were normal l, the trick is to do full range of motion and do progressive overload each week.

Ok. I have to admit I rolled my eyes when I read the title because so far none of the calf workouts I've tried have done anything. But holy cow, I can barely walk today!! Can't believe a 6 minute workout did that. Totally taking this guy's word for the rest. He knows his stuff!
He actually has two kids (twins). Could you imagine having him for your dad? I can only imagine what he's been teaching his kids since they were old enough to start crawling!
I've been lifting for 30 years. I have discovered you and redesigned my entire regiment in the last 30 days. I realized I didn't know shit and I'm really making serious gains now! Picking up a few of your shirts now is the least I can do to say THANK YOU! -Jay
I used to do exactly what you mentioned in the end and say my calves just wouldn't respond. my calves hurt so bad walking down my stairs now. Very thankful for your channel
I've been doing this for almost an year (only isolated exercise I do for calves) and I must tell you that I can really see the difference! Even though I still have somewhat skinny legs, they feel and look much more developed and fit (more than some Personal Trainers or bigger guys). I do get some stares from now and then since I'm the only person at my gym doing this kind of exercise but the results really show off! If you're starting off this may feel like torture but hey, it's just 6 min ;) Edit: Forgot to mention, I usually have to warm up and stretch the underside of my feet first because I have a tendency to get cramps in the first minute...
Do you feel it always a lot in your calves with this exercise? Because I'm doing it for almost 2 months, I take every 2 weeks more weight, but I only felt it the first 3 weeks a lot.
I cracked the 18" calf mark from 1 minute, 1x a week. I started with 10" sticks...big calves don't run in my family 100% intensity doesn't take much. Each rep has to count...slowly lower to stretch, pause to remove all momentum, then deliberately raise up. Simplicity is where it's at, when it comes to calves. If over-use is the problem, it can't be the solution.
Hey Jeff! I had been training for close to a year now but there was no calves growth at all. But on Friday morning, just before my legs workout, I watched this video and decided to give the calves pusher a try. Oh man...trust me the soreness remained for two straight days and the size bulged!! That was one simple but super effective calves workout. This will be only one from now on for my calves. Thank you Jeff!!
Jeff, thank you for your content. You are my couch and lucky to have UA-cam to find folks like you. I went from 220 lbs to 176 lbs, in around 4 months. Eating healthy and training at home using your Dumbbell videos. I feel stronger and more active now than I ever did in my entire life. Age: 28 Height: 5.6 Thank you once again for your great content that taught me form, how to avoid injuries, how much we can do with what time and equipment we have and nutrition.
I’m a 56-year-old female. Been working out for quite some time. I don’t think I’ve ever felt my calves as sore as I have when I did this work out. I was kind of chuckling to myself thinking to myself, “no way am I going to be sore”. Jeff proved me wrong. I’m crazy sore! But it’s a good thing. :-). Thanks for a great calf work out!!
For everyone saying its genetics arnold Schwarzenegger explained his Calf workout perfectly, the calves carry your weight everyday, if you weigh 180 lbs then doing calf raises with weight under 100 pounds won't do much, you should be doing calf raises with weight close to your body weight, 180 lbs plus 180 extra pounds is 360 all together or 2x the persons body weight so that's the amount of weight someone who weighs 180 lbs should be holding when doing Calf excercises, roughly 3×8. Heavy Weight, Low reps are optimal for building for mass.
If you have no calves then simple calf raises without any weight will grow them pretty quick. I've been doing that the last few weeks and now I'm hitting the point where its not enough and I need to move on to other exercises/adding weight. I've already noticed my calves are gaining definition.
John Pithers yeah that's a really expensive toaster too! heavy and makes the perfect toast everytime! And did I mention it's battery powered and can't burn?!
Hi there Jeff. I’ve been following you for a couple le of weeks now, and today I I worked out legs. I did this today and my calves are on fire. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

For anyone wondering this is a great workout👍 I personally have seen significant changes in the strength and looks but I'm not working for size so I didn't monitor it
A bodybuilder once saw my mum at the shops. He asked my mum "how do you get such big calve muscles?" She said "I don't drive. I walk everywhere. I walk home with all my shopping...it gives me strength, and a good workout." My mum carries heavy shopping for 35min walk home.
I normally overload my calves with 550 lbs x 15 on my last set... 2 days ago I tried this thing here in the video, along with a couple of other excercises (seated and donkey).... Still sore. Thumbs up for you sir.

Finally, calf :) Hi Jeff, Can you make a series about how to self-diagnose the causes of common pains such as shoulder pain, back pain, knee pain etc? Many Thanks
Smart guy! Remember to stretch the calves properly! I shift the stretch for the whole calf and it feels great. If you walk a lot in your job it is also important to stretch the calves after the work because you can then recover them easier, get the toxic waste out and creates better mobility for the coming days.
I build my calf muscles from a morning/evening routine while brushing my teeth. In the doorway to my bathroom the threshold is high because of the elevated bathroom floor. So I do my calves raises bare feet on that threshold one leg at a time with one hand pushing against the top railing of the doorway to keep balance and add weight (the other hand holding the toothbrush and doing tooth brushing). I switch leg every time I need to spit. Works great! Teeth are whiter than ever!
Ermal Mulaku if you go on Google play (it might also be on the Apple Store) there is a program called Spartan bodyweight. It's designed for MMA fitness training. Might be what you're looking for. And if it doesn't, then I guess you'll have to start thinking of names for this new series you want.
Just do the standing calf raises on one leg at a time. I do them on one leg until failure, then the other leg, while dangling my heels off of a step. For added challenge, don't hold on to anything and try to keep your balance. It makes it much harder. For the soleus, you can squat down, put your elbows on your knees, and do your calf raises that way. With body weight only though, it's hard to make your calves sore.
Nah, nothing helps for small calves genetics. Just look at the Mr. Os with all the roids and hgh in the world and you will see that those with bad genetics still have small calves compared to their giant quads etc... I have been lifting for 15 years and my calves are still small, tried everything.
The calves need to be trained frequently because it's a highly adaptable muscle group that's used to carrying you every single day. Also it's a small muscle group, which means it recovers more quickly. I had to train them 5-6 a week myself to see progress. It really tests your patience.
I did this using the side of the smith machine for the first exercise... and it was killer! Will definitely be doing this again. Thanks Jeff Calf-aliere :)
Will do this lightly next time. I swear what this guy says is true. I cant walk properly for 2 days now! Though goes to show how effective this work out is!
I made my calves do this workout no matter how hard it got. I worked them with dedication and perseverance. But they couldn't take it anymore. They left the shed....
What a shocker! So even though I didn't anchor my feet down and underneath a bench, I still simulated the motion enough to which my calves are sore. Thanks, Jeff, now, in a few days I'm gonna repeat this exercise the correct way!
nawec8484 thank you for your kind words sir..😊 i feel that you and me have now got a connection through my dumb statement... i feel that it has brought us together... we are now soul mates! we could however be lovers if only you would open to your true self... fancy a quick bum-finger behind the shed? 💩👈😝
I only did 10 just to see if the information given to me was false, and shortly after I had a hard time getting back up 😓 lol. Definitely gonna do this on my next off day.
I'm going to give these a try next leg day. In recent weeks I have started to do standing calf raises just off the floor without elevation. Because of this, I am controlling the movement and driving through the ball of my feet more. I am getting a better contraction than before and the Gastrocnemius is under constant tension. I feel like with elevated raises if I get to parallel or into a negative, I have shifted the weight and allowed the Gastrocnemius to essentially rest. I don't know if this is the same for anyone else. But fundamentally I think it is due to my height. I am 6 foot 3 inches tall. People keep coming up to me and offering me a plate to stand on and I have to explain to them why I don't need one and they don't understand. The best example I try to refer to is how with hip thrusts you also don't want a full range of motion. But they argue you do. Instead of correcting people who are doing something different, you should ask why they are doing something different. Guarantee once I begin doing these, the same thing will occur. No, you should be doing elevated standing calf raises...
Thank you I really appreciate the advice I've been struggling with my whole life with cankles even after losing 65 lb I didn't have the legs I always want and this worked thank you now I don't have to wear high heels to be confident my legs look amazing
Can you make a newer calf workout? even slight variation will do, I think I almost tore my right calf muscle on the first exercise because I didn't hook my legs properly or uneven weight/ load distribution
I train my calves every Tuesday Thursday and Saturday on my lower body days Try this circuit for 5 rounds with each exercise back-to-back with 1 minute rest between rounds and I tell ya your calves will love the pump: weighted pogo hops (I use weight vest w/ 40 lbs): 30-45 sec as explosive as you can one legged calf raise: 12-15 reps each leg, squeezing like hell at the top for a good few seconds each rep one legged static calf raise hold: 15-20 sec each leg, really focus on squeezing/contracting your gastrocs football shuffles: failure I also prefer each exercise done on a decent uphill incline to get that full stretch of the gastrocs in each rep Been doing this circuit for a few months now. I've gained a little over an inch so far (I'm at 16 in.) and still growing
The calves are really, more-so than any other muscle group, genetically predetermined. It doesn’t mean they will not grow from the stresses of exercise but, you will have to really target them and be patient with the growth that occurs. The best calf workout for myself has always been extremely slow rising and declining calf raises off a ledge of some sort. Allow your heal to really go into the negative on the way down so that your foot is basically pointing upward ,stretching the entirety of the muscle. Doing it really slow is key here as well.
Like with all muscles, your calves won't grow unless you use progressive overload on them. Sure, this will make them burn/sore, and you might even get a "pump" for a day or two. But if you want the muscle to actually grow, you need to do heavy calf lifts (both seating and standing), and progress that heavy weight upwards with every workout.
A nice easy way to hit PO on calves: plantar flexion while at the heightof your deadlift. Give it a try and mind your mind-muscle connection. Takes getting used to.
Theres one video i would like to see is when u use the markers to show us what direction ur muscle fibers are moving. when we do certain excercices i know you've done break downs on back chest and arms but what about calves and thighs? i really find that information helpful. Its really nice to know exactly what muscles ur working out when u do certain exercises.and thank you've really helped me to fill in alot of gaps i didn't know about exerciseing.
For everyone that's super pumped about trying this tomorrow for the first time... take it easy! how many days a week should you do these to be beneficial for growth on a "hard gainer"? Every other day? 3-4 days a week?
Steve_MP5 depends on your body and level of soreness. I’ve had people tell me they train calves and core everyday or 5 days a week.
Everyday
The calves need to be trained frequently because it's a highly adaptable muscle group that's used to carrying you every single day. Also it's a small muscle group, which means it recovers more quickly. I had to train them 5-6 a week myself to see progress. It really tests your patience.
Steve_MP5 some people can train them nearly everyday but personally I need at least a day of recovery in between for the pain and tightness to subside
Jeff thank you, calves have always been a muscle group that I struggle to develop. You just gave me two additional exercises to add to my arsenal
Can’t believe the sore in 6 minutes series was 2 years ago. Didn’t realize i’ve been watching this channel so long!

Thanks Jeff
I did this using the side of the smith machine for the first exercise... and it was killer! Will definitely be doing this again. Thanks Jeff Calf-aliere :)
Will do this lightly next time. I swear what this guy says is true. I cant walk properly for 2 days now! Though goes to show how effective this work out is!
My calves have never been so sore in my life. Ingenious workout!
Feels great
I made my calves do this workout no matter how hard it got. I worked them with dedication and perseverance. But they couldn't take it anymore. They left the shed....
Jeff could you do a sore in six for the forearms
LMAO bro that shit too funny
Blake Trahan 😂😂😂😂 bruh that's shit is true af . Switching up too helps
Tyrixxk tha only but can you do 4 sets 🤔
Carlos G depends, how much time do I get
Tyrixxk tha only average in between set time, 1 minute
What a shocker! So even though I didn't anchor my feet down and underneath a bench, I still simulated the motion enough to which my calves are sore. Thanks, Jeff, now, in a few days I'm gonna repeat this exercise the correct way!
Just started this workout yesterday and I'll continually to try my best to build my calves up..
right before my calf workout thanks jeff

I knew I'd find some gay comment about that.....
No, you should be doing elevated standing calf raises...
it's like you read my mind , I've been needing to get bigger calves
Emilio Perez Everyone needs big calves lol
rasta jay not me, and I have never exercised them either
rasta jay true true

Kenard Andrade Neto you cant be serious.

Thank you Jeff, you're turning my past Jessie into a future Jessie every day.
My calves have hurt for 3 days, but TBF, were not existent due to injury and muscle wastage, looking forward to building them.
Jeff seriously needs to give a lot of attention to his calves!
Can you make a newer calf workout? even slight variation will do, I think I almost tore my right calf muscle on the first exercise because I didn't hook my legs properly or uneven weight/ load distribution
Jeff brought out the microwaves again! I love those things. :)
I train my calves every Tuesday Thursday and Saturday on my lower body days
Try this circuit for 5 rounds with each exercise back-to-back with 1 minute
rest between rounds and I tell ya your calves will love the pump:
weighted pogo hops (I use weight vest w/ 40 lbs): 30-45 sec as explosive as you can
one legged calf raise: 12-15 reps each leg, squeezing like hell at the top for a good few seconds each rep
one legged static calf raise hold: 15-20 sec each leg, really focus on squeezing/contracting your gastrocs
football shuffles: failure
I also prefer each exercise done on a decent uphill incline to get that full stretch of the gastrocs in each rep
Been doing this circuit for a few months now.
"Oh trust me they'll respond. and tommorow they'll be yelling atcha. And you'll be yelling at me" idk why that got me😂😂
Like with all muscles, your calves won't grow unless you use progressive overload on them.
Thank you for this video. I've found my people.
jeff I'm begging you please do a more specific video about different exercises to do that work the lower chest! with or without weights prefered!
