Make a Split Band Turquoise Ring: A Silversmithing Tutorial
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- This tutorial shows how to make a great setting for an oval cabochon. This stone is a 10x12 mm piece of Turquoise. This is a good beginner project for someone who has learned a little soldering and wants to practice. For materials, I used 3 mm sterling triangle wire, #,4 low dome sterling half-round wire, and 3/16 inch (4.76 mm) fine silver bezel. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande.
It is important to use safe practices when dealing with fire, sharp tools, and chemicals. Here is a video on safety: • General Silversmithing...

Hi Chad, enjoy all your videos. This one is one of your best, in my opinion. Thank you I have learned a lot watching you work. Really appreciate you and your hard work doing these great tutorials.
Thank you Bryan! It makes me happy that you are enjoying the videos:). Thanks for the nice comment!
Nice one Chad! As usual good tips throughout the video. Thanks for this!!
Thanks Bill! Glad you liked it:)
Just discovered your channel a bit ago, great teaching style, you make everything seem so calm and relaxing and great tips like the way you started sawing the split ring band and the pick soldering technique has been so helpful for a beginner like me. Thank you so much!
Thanks Mona! I'm glad you're getting some useful tips:)
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for! I did start, you gave me the courage🙏. I wish so much a could give back more for the amazing things you’ve taught me-one day I will. I’d love to send you one of my precious stones though-I’m terrified I’ll ruin it and I know you could make something amazing with it! Thanks so much again Chad!
You’re welcome Lauryl! I’m glad I could help:)
This is one of my favorite rings to make. Looks great. Who cares if you air file, it gets the job done. Hey now, careful who you call an old geezer!
P.S. I use tobacco or cardboard. It’s the old way. Since you’ve already called us old geezers you’ll know.
Hehe. The idiom I almost said was "within spitting distance." Next thing you know I'll be calling things "the cat's pajamas," cementing my status as a geezer:)
This is an awesome video, I learned a lot from this one
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful design!
Why thank you:)
Simple, yet elegant, thanks for another great project
Thank you so much for your generosity playwithasmile!
Another Great job
Thanks SabreKing!
Looks great _ love the silver and turquoise combination
Thanks Norma:). Hard to go wrong with turquoise!
Awesome thanks
No problem Kathy! Glad you liked it!
Hey, you old geezer, Chad! Jk! Love the triangle wire, great ring. I won't holler about air filing. Sometimes it just works, and there is less file chattering. I DO wonder why you don't use a piece of sand paper flat on the table for pieces that are larger than the width of your file if you are going for a flat uniform surface. I find that a file that is narrower than the piece will never produce an unmarked surface that is flat. Whatcha think?
Have you tried that? You might love it. I buy various grits of those 6" round sand paper discs (220 is my favorite) the ones with sticky adhesive on them, and put two together back to back. I write the grit on them. Flat on my table/bench, they sand flat surfaces really nicely and quickly. 🌺 🌺 🌺
Super good idea Flying Chef! I honestly should have done that a long time ago. You're the Bee's Knees!
@@chadssilversmithing bzzzz bzzzz!
Chad, I may be incorrect here but it rings in my mind that obtuse goes with triangle’s. It’s no big deal anyway.. btw, I am an older geezer than you are 😂. Thanks great tutorial!!
I’m just not sure if there is a term to describe oval proportions:). Glad you liked the video!
❤
Thank you!
So Chad,.. Do you not put a makers mark or a hallmark on your stuff ?!?! Just wondering ! lol
If I can find a good place to stamp them I do generally:)
What was it that you put under the cabachon? And where do you get it? Thank you
I use uncorrugated tagboard. Sneak into your coworkers desk and cut the backs off of any legal pads you find:). Those work great!
Is obong a geometric term ?
As a non-math guy, I would say oblong is probably too vague for mathematicians:)
Very nice indeed! Silver and Turquoise work so well together. Thanks for sharing Chad and have a fantastic weekend.
Thanks Gazz! It does look really nice together. Have a good weekend yourself!
