    to transfer a logo to a knifeblade you need a laser printer!
    inkjet dont work for this!
    and not every paper works. try different typ of paper.
    best results for me was with very thin and shiny paper from this book.
    2.
    just place the logo on the blade and use some aceton with good pressure. watch out to dont let the paper move. (it has to be as wet as possible) than just let it dry for a minute.
    3.
    remove the paper very carefully with clear water. all parts of the logo have to be clean and free from paper.
    4.
    cover the parts of the blade that you dont wont to etch with some tape.
    5.
    etch with saltwater.
    (search on youtube for videos about it, there are enough)
    6.
    clean up with aceton.

    Finally... someone who provided information on DETAILED work. This was so much more effective, clean, and detailed than most other DIY etchings.

    just to be clear: use a good coated paper to laser print on, like from a magazine,
    at 0.14 we see laser printed on magazine paper - I thought it was From the mag-- mag paper is clear coated for shininess,
    at 0.30 we see soak with acetone -- that resets the ink off the paper and onto the metal,
    at 1.19 wash paper off with water, ?? is that immediate or wait till it drys? -- let paper get soaked, gently roll off the fibers,
    at 2.41 .mask off with box tape/ packing tape, -- not masking tape as it is paper based and packing tape is plastic sheet.
    electro etch with a solution and wash off with acetone,
    = easy way to get very tiny and sharp detail in etch.
    thanks Geko

      VERY VERY VERY helpful, Karl!
      Thanks - I was confused at first too about the printing, and wondering what he meant when he said you needed a laser printer! (And was wondering why that magazine/catalog has a bunch of biohazard-like logos all in a row!)
      AND I was confused about the liquid - "why is he putting water on it with one pad, then putting it in water....!?!?!"
      THANKS for the explanations!
      My one suggestion, too: try this on a piece of scrap steel, preferably the same type as your knife, FIRST.

      So I do have to use a laser printer? Because I don't have any type of printer. Or can I use a cutout of a magazine?

      This may be a silly question, does the logo need to be printed in reverse? black outline with white letters/symbols?

    • @curiouskitteh8215
      @curiouskitteh8215 6 років тому

      Wade Smith probably, because stamping programs automatically flip the end file to be a mirror image, so that when you stamp it it reverses again. I just did a photo transfer project too and couldn’t use anything with text because my end product would make it unreadable.

    The etching of the knife is oxidation of the iron atoms off the knife making them ions. Cool thing to do is before taking off the tape, reverse polarities on the knife and cotton swab (switch red and black clamps). Then go over the etch again and you will permanently blacken it as you reduce the iron ions back to an oxide inside the etch you just made. I've done this and it works great.

    Can't wait to try just the transfer method of the resist to the metal. Been using an iron and aaargh - such iffy results. THEN I'm gonna up the ante and learn what you're doing with the battery terminals/alligator clips since that seems to work like "poof"

    Very interesting. A few things I dont understand:In step 3 you state all parts of the logo has to be clean and free of paper. After cleaning there is a blueish square surrounding the logo. In step 4 you don't cover this square with tape.In step 5 you include this square when etching but only the logo comes out etched. Why isn't the whole square etched?I have not tried this yet but plan to do it soon.Greetings from South Africa

    I found this a couple of weeks ago, didn't comment on it at the time but went ahead and tried it out. I had a few issues with speckling around the mark but noticed that if I let it dry completely after I remove the paper backing with water it works very well especially with smaller and finer markings. I wanted to thank you for this and also let you know I am spreading the word. I saw another video of someone using the iron method (which I was using initially) and posted a link to your video. Here is his link; ua-cam.com/video/dIPYvfIQ8ug/v-deo.html and that person will try your method! Honestly you gotta love the Internet, thanks again Geko !!!

      +Geko on Crete I'm using a lot of acetone. the problem is with the paper but i can't get a printout on thin glossy magazine paper. would thick, photograph paper work? i don't have a printer at home, so it takes time to try different papers. sometimes it does work but the quality isn't good enough

    • @andrewvautour1795
      @andrewvautour1795 8 років тому +3

      +Rayhan Ali I have found that using sticker or label paper works the best. Get some labels paper, the kind normally used for say sticking on envelopes for addressing. Peel off all the labels and print your image on the shiny side. The back of the sheet will be paper and the side you are printing on will be the glossy. This way you can soak the paper side and it will transfer well to the image. Hope this helps and as Geko on Crete stated, you must really saturate the paper so it soaks all the way through. And again thank you Geko on Crete for the information, really helped me :)

    Before you masked off the design, there was the logo encased in a box. The logo is the printer ink, what is the box? Remaining material from the shiny paper? I'm trying to figure out why the logo etched, but the box around it didn't.

    • @gekooncrete2183
      @gekooncrete2183  7 років тому

      the "box" is the printer ink. the logo is just shiny metal. the etching efects just the places that are not covered from the ink.

    do you let the ink dry after printing or place it immediately on the knife?

  • @theosalt1
    @theosalt1 4 роки тому

    Does this mean you rely on the carbon content of the ink from the magazine picture to conduct electricity and electrically etch the steel? If indeed this is so and it really works then this is really clever. Would probably not work for any other non-carbon coloured ink.

    • @LowenKM
      @LowenKM 3 роки тому

      Nope, the laser toner is basically just micro particles of black plastic, fused together and onto the paper to form the image. When the toner image gets transferred off the paper to the metal, it acts as a stencil 'resist', so all that black surround on the design was actually _protecting_ the metal from the etch.

      I thought so too. I am going to go thru some more of my magazines and get some more paper. Can it dry too long. I may let it sit for an hour to make sure. I know acetone evaporates very quickly, I did the version with regular paper and box tape and an iron. Worked pretty good. Heating my surface is not the route i want to go though.
