I'm so excited to get my leos switched over to your bioactive kit. I know they're going to love it. Thanks for this video. Very clear, and fun to see the setup process!
I definitely want to see a 40 gallon bioactive leopard gecko setup!!!!Sounds good, update us my dude Josh!!!
Don’t worry! He’s made one
thank you so much bio dude. I rehomes a 2yr old leopard gecko who has been kept in a 5 gal tank. I wanted to give him a better home. After watching you set this tank up I had to do somthing like this for my new guy. I ordered your kit and I love it. I have seen a big change in my geckos routin.
You really had yours in a 5 gallon??
I really like the idea of this Terra Sahara substrate, without the need for a base layer. I have several humid bioactive vivaria, I am seriously contemplating the switch to bioactive for our leopard gecko now. Thanks for a great video!
Thank you!
This is the first youtube I have seen showing how to do a bio active for leopard geckos. Plenty around on Crested Geckos. Very interesting. The gecko looks kind of snug in a 10 gallon, particularly with the need for multiple hides, so I guess a 15-20 would be better.
Absolutely. This enclosure is just the tank I take to shows to display. His new tank is a 40 breeder that I am working on at this moment.
The Bio Dude Josh Halter . Could you post your setup of the 40 gallon for your leopard gecko?
Working on it!
I will be shortly. I am actually getting a new 24 x 18 x 24 for them that I will be doing a construction build on.
The Bio Dude Josh Halter u look stoned u smoke green crack
I know this video is three years old but I just found your channel! I just adopted a leopard gecko with MBD so I have officially subscribed and can’t wait to build her a beautiful home. Thank you!
Awesome setup!!!And I have to say the products I bought from you are top notch!!!
Thank you! Thats what I do!
great video man love the setup and led light can't wait to check out ur site!
Thank you!
Will definitely be ordering this set up. Always wondered about a natural set up for Leos, but it seemed pretty daunting. This seems simple. I have a 20 gallon terrarium, so this stuff should fit better.
Nice I'm going to get this hopefully
is there any equivalent for this stuff in canada, I can't seem to find anything :(
I have a exo terra medium low, what size kit would be best for it? thanks
Could I use a Deep heat projector with this setup?
Hi I have a bearded dragon in a chameleon can you use bio active substrate with chameleons and bearded dragons and also have a corn snake I was wondering how much it would cost
Great video. I was wondering if having the cold hide works better because I assume mold would be a problem with the moisture and heat (not on the sphagnum moss but on the Sahara.
Good question. Typically he chills on the 'sauna' hide of the vivarium. When you see a little bit of mold between those layers that is actually a good thing! That is showing you that your tank is cycling, positive bacteria and different types of fungi are starting to do their jobs in breaking down the organic matter. If you go out into the woods and keep digging to the bottom you will almost always find some sort of mold or fungi : )
We are slowly but surely!
How/do you recommend moisturizing the substrate, just spraying?
So my question is, why are the moist hide and hot hide in the same place? 95% of videos you see online have the hot hide and moist hide on different ends of the habitat.
Well the Moist hide needs to be warm to stop bacteria and fungi from growing
CoolJZW 3 bacteria grow best at temperatures above 41 degrees and below 130. Being warm makes them breed quicker not that I’m saying it matters anyway. Don’t cook for anyone for a living thinking like that
Great video. Just wondering why the plants. They don't eat them do they? I thought that they didn't. Are they just for appearance?
They are carnivores
This guy says every thing beautifully
hey, i've been wanting to do this for my leos for a long time just wasn't sure how to go about it... you don't ship to Canada so my question is how would i go about the substrate? could i buy some substrates from the petstore and mix them or how would you suggest i go about it?
awesome ! I cant wait to get my leopard gecko! Do you recommend a breeder or store brought?
I live in Canada do you know any brands that is equivalent to the TerraSahara Substrate?
I ordered a bioactive tank a couple days ago and it came in today but I didn’t get the bugs
Isn’t the substrate too dense for the heat to rise from the heat mat all the way to the top?
I am looking at upgrading my blizzard leopard gecko to a 40 breeder tank and I ordered the kit for a 20 gal cause that's what I currently have, my question is can I add sand to the substrate to make up the difference instead of buying more dirt? Or what would you suggest? Thanks.
What under the tank heater do you recommend for this depth of substrate
I like the Zoo Med ones
Do you still recommend to put the heating pad on the back of the tank with this setup? I have a 20 gallon - long tank
I recommend the side, yes
I can see you've upgraded you technique for the moss between this and the rebuild. Super loving your videos. I've recently become obsessed with the idea of creating bioactive terrariums and decided that a leopard Gecko will be and easy start thanks to everything your videos have taught me. My Goal is Chameleons and tree frogs.
P.S. Plz create a twitch channel.
I'm on your site right now and I am curious if it comes with the cute little cleanup crews (bugs)?
I currently have a 10-gallon setup with the UTH attached to the bottom of the vivarium. Is there a way to convert this viv to bioactive using your substrate without completely redoing the heating?
You can easily do that with no problems. I like to put the heat on the side as you get more out of your unit.
The Bio Dude Josh Halter Thank you! In your opinion, is it possible to peel the Zoo Med UTH off of the bottom without damage? I've heard both yes and no...
Nope. That will destroy the unit. The main reason I put it on the side (as it even says in big bold letters on the product) that you can't put weight on the cord itself. So you can ONLY put it on the bottom if the cord falls down an open table under the tank, not getting pinched. Removing it would just mess with the unit unfortunately.
The Bio Dude Josh Halter Thank you, that makes a lot of sense. I suspected as much. The vivarium we has is built with raised feet, so fortunately the cord of the UTH is not pinched. I am unsure how we could convert this vivarium at this point...wouldn't the substrate be too deep over the UTH, preventing the gecko from getting enough heat? Or would we simply make that part of the substrate shallower, covering the area with cork bark, and allow that area to function as the hide?
You can do either or. The deeper the substrate the more effective it is.
It is different for everyone, there are some people that must use supplemental heat and others that do not.
Do you use a Temperature Controller with the Under Tank Heater and if, so what do you keep the temperature set?
You want to use a thermostat and it should be around 90-95°F I keep mine around 92
Hi! Is this setup suitable also for sharp ribbed salamander? I am looking for this kind... self maintenance of a terrarium for the sharp ribbed salamander. I've never had one before... thank you!
I am not 100% certain on their husbandry - I would have to consult my book.
Salamanders can be tricky, so if you reach out to us at customercare@thebiodude.com I can do some research and get you taken care of with the appropriate stuff! Thank you ; )
What would I need for a 55gal setup? As far as how many isopods and springtails
James, if you contact me on my website I can help you!
How is the tank getting heated? I didn't see an undertank heater?
I did not install it on the video as this is not his cage, this is only to show you guys what you can make. His normal cage, a 40 breeder is heated with nano heat and a UTH
No I don't know if you said this during the video but what size did you use for this pack??
Hi Hallie. This is a 10g set up.
So where would you put the thermostat probe for a setup like this?
Hi Robert. I would put the prob where your hottest point should be. I usually put it in their warm hide in a setup like this.
Sorry if it’s been answered already, do the 20g long bio kits come with one or two 6qt bags of terra Sahara, also what size tank is this,
Hi Esskay. That is a 20g long in the video for a baby gecko. The 20g long kit comes with 4- 6qt Terra Sahara. You can view all of the contents here: www.thebiodude.com/collections/gecko-bioactive-kit/products/leopard-gecko-bioactive-kit
Question: How much Terra Sahara 6 quart bags would you need for a 24 by 18 by 12 inch Exo terra terrarium? (L times W times H) I'm not the best at conversions and I want to know if I would have enough for a tank this big.
hey there, send the care team an email - customercare@thebiodude.com
I’ve seen a good amount of people use clay balls as a base substrate for water drainage. Are they needed for a leopard gecko setup since the humidity is so low?
Hey there! you are right, the humidity is too low to need one.
Hi! Great video...does the kit come with the isopods?
Thank you! We do not include the isopods or springtails with the kits due to needing to ship them overnight and their sensitivity to hot/cold temperatures during shipping. For that reason, we recommend trying to source them locally.
Can you write down a where you got all the stuff ???
Do you have to dechlorinate the water before you spray it?
Depending on where you live, I would recommend it.
Does the leopard gecko bioactive kit include the bugs?
Hi Justin. The kits do not come with the bugs. Those have to be shipped separately via FedEx overnight. The kits, however, do come with The BioShot which does everything the bugs do overtime, aside from soil aeration.
I'm guessing they don't get uvb from the light you're using?
UVB is provided via a ReptiSun 10.0
hello, do you ship to canada?
How can you heat it with so much substrate
Killersnake 898 like I stated in the video the Sahara is designed to keep large air pockets throughout which allows you're under tank heaters to push the heat throughout the side of the tank
Thank you so much, you made a bioactive setup seem way less intimidating.
Glad it was helpful!
Do you think you'll ever ship to Canada?
are lights grow included in these kits
Hi Arachnivue. All of our species specific kit include the LED light.
Could you make a video on bioactive anole set-ups.
Yes! I have two Cubans setup Bio.
Soon!
Awesome
Do you NEED to include the plants?
I saw on your bearded dragon bioactive video that you used your bioshot. I am about to make a bioactive setup for my 2 leopard geckos in a 30 gallon. do you think it is a good idea to use your bioshot in a leopard gecko setup? I Just want to be sure that the archea in the bioshot does ok in a leopard gecko setup. Please tell me your thoughts on how well it would survive in this type of environment. Thank you for your time. And once again, thank you for a great video.
I would recommend the BioShot for all biomes.
Thanks Josh
Hi! I'm wanting buy your product for my leopard gecko. Does the kit online come with the bugs?!
Hi Lacy. The bugs do not come with the kit. We include The BioShot instead which does everything the bugs do aside from soil aeration. The bugs have to be ordered and shipped separately via FedEx overnight.
How would I keep the heat going through all that substrate?
You can put the heat mat on the side of the terrarium (which works great). I have used an UTH with a deeper layer and the gecko always dig their burrow slightly deeper to reach the heat a little closer.
Thank you very much for the support. It is greatly appreciated! Let me know if I can be of assistance with your build.
The Bio Dude Josh Halter sure thing! I completely support you! Your great with your builds! I will be making all my geckos bioactive eventually 😄 my geckos are the world to me so I wanna provide them with the most natural stuff I can give them❤✉✉
Can you use an asparagus fern in a leopard gecko set up?
I don't think it would handle the arid environment as well.
I don't know how well it would do with that low of a humidity value.
Does the led do something? Plants dont need lights... Please answer
Hi Rhyno Roy. The LEDs provide a proper spectrum of light that stimulates optimal plant growth. While some plants are considered low, they all need some type of light source. How do plants process photosynthesis without light?
@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter do you ship international i live in mexico ...thnx
Rhyno Roy no, he doesn’t ship internationally
would you say 15 isopods is enough of a start for a 20 gallon bio active considering they will breed? i also have a tremper albino who has some trouble catching prey and is sensitive to light so i don’t think it will be able to catch the isopods
That should work out great!
i want a bio active setup for my leo. my parents wont order me anything or anything like that so is there anything any stores sell that can be used as the substrate. something safe that wont impact her?
Annelise Ward eco earth. It is a great substrate and my leo has been able to pass it through its system, making it alot better than sand impaction-wise. It also works fairly well for plants as a have a Aloe Vera planted in mine. You can get a buncha it for about 10 bucks from a local pet store! Hope this helped! :D
Do I need the bugs? I find 35$ for shipping bugs expensive right now being that I don't have much money but want a better habitat for my gecko
You can collect isopods from outside, they're basically rollie-pollies. But you have to keep them on carrots and lettuce (or safe foods) for at least a week, so that any parasites or bad stuff comes out before you put them into an enclosure where they have the potential to be eaten.
What's the name of those succulents?
I’m a bit confused. Why would you do this set up for a desert dweller? They are used to heat, sand and rocks and not dirt, plants and cork with humidity. Please help me to understand. Because I like the idea of setting up a natural habitat for my geckos. I want them to be as happy as possible. Tks for the very through video.
Sand is bad for Leo’s, the substrate stays dry at the top, making humidity low. Also the plants are good for the Leo’s environment
Jack R thanks for that information.
Is a LED a UVB tube.
No it is not. Personally, I use a 5.0 on him.
This is a 10 gallon?
How often watering
I mist the tank daily.
Jesus what a bright light for a nocturnal creature. This is like the sun in the earth's atmosphere. I think I would be more interested in my pets comfort than plants.
in nature the sun rises to, you just have to give it a good place to hide
How often do you want to hydrate the moss??
I have not honestly - the 24 x 18 x 18 that we are in has been working great with little to no maintenance.
they dont need a water dish? (not trying to sound stupid) I am definetly ordering from you I've just never had a leopard gecko and all the care sheets say they need a water dish. Is it because of the humidity build up on the heatpad side that they dont need it? also I love the break down of your videos as do my kids👌
Brittany, I always provide fresh, clean water. This tank is just a demonstration.
Can i use eco earth
Yes
Is the substrate sold in stores ??
Some, yes. Expect more USA distribution to more chains by the end of the upcoming year...Boxes!
Can you have a tank this small for a leopard gecko? I'm not saying you did anything wrong, just curious.
I would recommend something larger. This is just a show tank, he is actually in a 40 B.
The Bio Dude Josh Halter mines in a 55 tall and she thrives
Hi! I know this video is a bit old and possibly this channels opinions have changed but is a 10 gallon long an okay size for a leopard geckos entire life? I've heard most pros on youtube say 20 gallons is more efficient at maintaining a defined cold and hot side, which is choice for an adult leo. However I myself don't even have a leopard gecko lol I'm just trying to get facts straight before getting one in the future. (I hope it's obvious I don't mean any hate, I still enjoyed this video) :)
Hey there! For the gecko to grow out in we would recommend 20 or 40 gallons, due to once everything is inside such as substrate and decor there is less space. 40 gallons would be more ideal for space, which is best for optimal heating gradients(hot and cold sides), plant growth, enrichment and decor :) Check out the dudes blog page for A LOT of informational articles involving set up and enrichment! i will link it here, make sure to check out the library of blogs on the right side of the page - The Dude Abides. www.thebiodude.com/pages/bio-dude-blog
what is spot clean anybody knows
Spot cleaning means looking around on the surface of your enclosure, checking for the things like the animals excrement and other unwanted things, and removing them.
Can you do a Madagascar Giant Day Gecko Setup ?
water bowl???
I want everything in the tank that I see in your video.
Hi Josh. I'm new to all of this and you mentioned spot cleaning. What exactly does that entail? Like you, I want things done right (I might be more on the OCD side of things). Also, I have an adult female and a yet-to-be-sexed 1 month juvenile. Do you see any issue with housing them in the same 20 gal setup? I'll be buying my supplies from your website, as soon as I hear back from you, so hurry up ;-)
Hey Martin. I do not recommend d keeping them in the same enclosure. The little one is way too small and the 20g isn't big enough to do a proper cohab. Spot cleaning would be picking out fecal matter or urates for the first couple of weeks while you micro fauna gets established. After a couple of months, this will not be necessary.
Would love to see a blue tongue skink vivarium video
Getting there!
that substrate is really thick, will using an under the tank heater be dangerous to heat the top layer to a proper temp? also i understand that humidity in high amounts can be dangerous for leopard geckos, so i think i may prefer tile as a substrate for now lol.
I currently house a leopard gecko in a 20 gallon tall. What would you recommend to purchase on your site?
ShinaTheAngelDragon I would go with the 20long kit. Or build it yourself with the Sahara kits offered on the website :)
The Bio Dude Josh Halter Thanks for such the quick response!!
My pleasure. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
if they usually go in the dryer spot why do mine poop in there water bowls all the time
Sometimes they will do that : )
You didn't use a water bowl!?
Hey there! for random displays or set ups they just are not in the videos. they are always added once an animal is inside.
This set up seems a little too moist, but that's just me XD
saltdogo aj The ambient humidity is 25% on one side and 50% where the humid Hide is consistently.
No, you're Mr lebowski, "I'm the dude"
CAT!!
Why don't you use rocks in your terarrium ? Nice setup by the way
Hi Romain. Sometimes I do. I just haven't done any lately. Thank you!
The minimum size tank for a leopard gecko Is a 20 gallon long
This is just one of his show tanks. He doesn’t keep animals in this size.
@@gabberwocky7759 yes but then he should mention it in the video
Why is that tank set up soooo tiny though?? As a person who has their own business and says their educated on these reptiles why not a way bigger tank?
Hey there! we make set ups in multiple sizes for different stages of life for all reptiles, this is also an older video, we had a larger enclosure video that was removed for a channel revamp. apologies if there was any confusion!
hi my tank is 53 imperial gallons which I think is 63 us gallons. Could you give some advice about what I should buy as you only do a 29 gallon tank . my leopard gecko is an offspring of the biggest in the world ... he's around 130 grams and 10 inches so I got him a big tank . he does use it all and I have loads of hides (3 small ones and one huge one ... a shoe box I converted) but I want to make his more natural so he can have the house he deserves! hope you reply and if anyone could give some advice that would be great and highly appreciated, thanks dom!
Hi are you in the United States?
The Bio Dude Josh Halter no the UK
Giant Day Geckos Bioactive Terrarium*?

Where is the heat mat?
The heat mat is on the side of the vivarium. It was attached after.
The Bio Dude Josh Halter Why on the side? They need belly heat, because it helps aid in digestion and blood circulation. Leopard geckos cannot climb glass because they don't have the toe pad that are often found in geckos and lizards. A heatmat on the side of the tank wouldn't do much because it doesn't heat the air.
I put it on the side because you get maximum efficacy from your unit that way. It even says on the box of the UTH that the surface the tank is sitting on has to be an open bottom, because you can't pinch the cord because it affects performance and longevity. The side heat works great getting the heat into the pockets as well as throughout the layers of the substrate, creating your heat saunas. I can't say I have ever had any issues using the pads that way with my Leopard Geckos.
How the heck is so fast lmao
That tank is way to small for that gecko and the bud was like he half arsed it
Wait where's the warm hide?
Back L corner
But they
with that much humidity your gecko will get a respiratory infection
Zacharie Richman that is simply not true. I'm the wild leopard geckos thrive in the more humid areas of the desert to help with hydration because in their harsh climate they are constantly
Losing water through osmosis. If anything it helps with respiration, hydration and shedding.
I'll post some vet journals here soon for you to read and learn a little more.
i have that concern too, seeing you spraying the whole tank the humidity for sure was too high. Very Little is known how they live in the wild because they are not that easy to observe it would be really interesting to see those jurnals do you have a link? Providing humid hides is essential for shedding, but i would just spray those instead of the whole tank ;)
That tank is to small
Very very small come on!!
Bigger now
don't like you handling your gecko like that, no wonder his tail fell off...
