PS1 has No 2D hardware. It’s all 3D GPU accelerated recreations of 2D raster based art and assets. Dreamcast has no 2D hardware either. The only systems in this group that actually have real raster based anything is the GBA, CPS2, and the Sega Saturn, and even the Saturn only has it for backgrounds, the sprites are textured quads. And the Anthology collection is emulated, so NO 3D GPU stuff is used to recreate any of it outside of the framebuffer it displays its visuals on.
X-Men vs. SF only had 3 versions. Hardly worth the effort lol! SFA3 spans 7 platforms: arcade/CPS2, PS1, Saturn, DC/arcade NAOMOI, GBA, PSP, and the DEFINITIVE version on the PS2.

I've played most of these! This analysis is just superb, and, as they say, they all play just GREAT. Still, while it is technically the worst, i need to praise the GBA version. It is probably one of the most IMPRESSIVE ports for a handheld ever made, if not THE best. The whole game's there (sans the intro and some tracks/voice samples, but they are ultimately cosmetic changes), and its gameplay is just phenomenal!!! Kinda makes one irate to see other GBA ports of technically INFERIOR games that were just pure trash. (Looking at you, Sonic!)
Really enjoyed this video! Would it be possible to record gameplay without the filters smearing the pixels? The look is very distracting, especially when showing handheld titles (GBA here, GBC in the Alpha 2 vid). Keep up the good work!
It’s not that the Dreamcast version is missing T. Hawk’s walking back animation. It’s that it didn’t exist until the Saturn version. Believe me, they could’ve more than put that in.
The Saturn port is extremely impressive and the one that offers the best experience, in my opinion, when it comes to variety of characters, balance and modes. Besides, the Saturn controller is the best one for this title. Of course, the PSP port is the one most people would say is the definitive one, but I actually believe the added characters are detrimental to the experience and the stretched image bothers me a little.
Playing on PPSSPP, you can fix the stretched image. Ingrid is completely out of place in that game but Maki, Eagle and Yun fit in fine imo though Maki's resolution looks to be too high
People always like to hate on the PS version of a lot of these 2D games. But what people don’t understand is that the console was Built more for 3D than 2D. The fact that they made an overall solid port with a few missing frames should amaze people on how they did it. The game had loading times but thats a Plague that still runs to this day with almost everything we use. computers, phones, TVs, game consoles etc. load times aren’t event long for this game and it baffles me that no one is used to it in gaming by now. Take a look at Street Fighter Alpha 2 For SNES. Would you believe that game was actually able to run on a SNES at all? Despite the limitations the PS1 version of SFA 3 is still Good but no port can be perfect. The Dreamcast was a port of the PS1 and the Saturn had load times too but not as long as the PS1. A lot of these kids didn’t even grow up with these games and most of them don’t event own a copy of any version of the game themselves.
It actually was, while the animations were restored it also carried with it a lot of the hitbox problems while creating some brand new ones in the process. The Saturn version was actually a custom made port for the system and was actually a more faithful port in gameplay than both the DC and PS1. It really wasn’t until PS2 Anthology where it finally met its match.
@@tiagofernandes8389 It was not a PS1 port. This is just an uniformed PS fanboy making boisterous claims. The DC and NAOMI versions of SF Alpha 3 are special Conversions coded from the ground up.
The PS2 version is not Naomi emulation, it is said to be a rebuilt CPS 2 version with the extra characters added. T-Hawk also has his walking backwards animation from the Saturn version as well, something the Noami version is even missing.
Footage is from emulators, have you tried the Dreamcast version on an actual Dreamcast? Back in the day the consensus was that the Dreamcast had the best SFA3 port. Hitboxes were not changed
Many purists have said the hitboxes were messed up, and it is based off of the Naomi version, which has been said is based off the PS1 version, so no it isn't the best version of the game out there. The PS2 and Saturn versions were arcade accurate as one was based off the CPS2 version (Saturn) and one was a reworked, with the extra characters from Upper added in, CP2 emulation of the CPS2 version. (PS2).
Bloodreign1 I have a SS and a DC in my living room. The hitbox differences may be too few and or subtle as I cannot see the difference. For me I prefer the DC for faster load times and VGA output (vs SCART). Obviously SS has a much better first party controller.
Dreamcast version was an all together different game and couldn’t be used for arcade practice at all due to everything it altered. And it was a LOT. That and the PS1 had the absolute worst home conversions of the game. The first actually good port was the Saturn one up until the PS2 Anthology which based its ports entirely off the original CPS2 games instead of doing major altering of things.
@@pinkmysteryman I'm pretty sure he's talking about Alpha 3 on the 30th Anniversary Collection being compared. It's no point in making a comparison video because all of the games on the collection are 100% emulated.
This is a great series, insta sub. Btw will you be doing a another series like this? Say maybe Marvel vs Capcom and Marvel vs Capcom 2? Or starting with the Vs games? Keep up the great work!
This is an excellent video, very informative and great the way you compared the games side-by-side. I hadn't realised that the version of unlockable version SFA3^ on the PS2 Alpha Anthology was merely an emulated version of the Naomi arcade version, and that the other Alphas were just emulated straight from CPS. Personally, my favourite versions are the PSP Alpha 3 Max and Naomi arcade because both retain most sprites and gameplay mechanics, whilst including some extra characters (although I do agree with you that the extra ones on the PSP version do make it look like Mugen because they were simply taken straight from other games without Capcom bothering to style them similarly to Alpha characters).
Maybe his walkback animation causes the NAOMI hardware builds of the game to bug out lol (Dreamcast, SFZ3 Upper arcade, MAX PSP). But yeah what a bizarre omission and I'm surprised it was never restored.
DO you know what's going on with the arcade mode and the added characters from the console versions to the arcade port of SF alpha anthology? (meaning Dee Jay, Fei Long, T Hawk, Guile etc.). I have read, that there is a code with which, those characters with Juli, Juni, Shin Akuma and Evil Ryu can become available for battling against them in arcade mode), BUT ONLY FOR STREET FIGHTER ALPHA 3 UPPER VERSION!! I would like to know, if in the ps1 version of the game (where Dee Jay, T.Hawk and Fei Long are available from the beggining), can anyone battle against them in arcade mode? I have played many hours SFA3 in ps1 as a kid, but it has been many years from then, so I can't remember if I came across those specific characters in the arcade mode. GREAT VIDEO !!!
Great video man, you have to cover some more capcom classics; X-men CotA, Marvel Super Heroes, X-men vs SF, Marvel vs SF, Darkstalkers etc etc. Look forward to your upcoming vids :)
I had the game on my gba and i can say for sure that the gba version is the most impresive one (taking in count the limitations of the console it's an AMAZING job)
I found out that the Japanese Saturn version is the closest to the arcade in terms of not being nerfed - maybe even Crouch Cancel works (haven't tested that). All other versions on DC, PSP, PS1 (etc) all had major balance changes compared to arcade - even the US Saturn release. Not sure why the Japanese Saturn release was spared.
Although it's not shown in the video, i think the NAOMI version of alpha 3 upper is one of my favorite ports since it had more characters and used the arranged soundtrack. I think alpha 3 max on psp is the overall best port available.
I've always enjoyed SFA3 at home...on my PS1. I always wanted the DC version, but never got around to finding it. Now though, I'll go ahead and find the Saturn version, as I've had both US and JPN Saturn consoles for a long time now. (And already have the 4MB cart, etc.) Great video!
Good luck paying through the nose for the Saturn version, it is highly sought after and will run you a small fortune. A cheaper option, if you still have a PS2, Alpha Anthology. Once you beat SF Alpha 3, or lose to Bison, you unlock Alpha 3 Upper (hold select and X while pressing start). You'll know it's Alpha 3 Upper when you start the game and see the expanded roster, everyone that is in the Saturn version is also in that hidden game on Anthology..
@@segaunited3855 The Dreamcast port is far worse. It has wrong hitboxes, wrong speed, a horrific filter that affects all CPS2 games on the machine, and both unnecessary balance changes that kill any chance of it helping you play SFA3 against opponents online in 2022 + a lot more input lag (suspected to not affect the earliest Japanese versions, but those don’t have VGA support). The PS2 Anthology version is 100% arcade perfect, still has a good training mode, and you get a fixed version of SFA3U (which is the Dreamcast version).
2:47 to 2:59 PS1 R.Mika has the CPII Intro Pose and Winning Pose too, plus the one when she runs with the Tire. 5:21 PS1 has that intro too, but you have to unlock it
fafling so the saturn needs an add on to run it, I think that’s kind of an important thing to know. The PlayStation version though not the best and missing some animations didn’t need an add on to run it. In my opinion that makes the ps1 version a better version
It's not so much that the Playstation version doesn't need an add-on, it's more that it can't use one (no expansion port on the Playstation). No other choice but to cut enough corners to make it fit the hardware. Since the Saturn version was released late in the system's life, Capcom considered that the target audience probably already had a RAM cartridge from a previous game, and didn't want a watered down version.
Great video, here some AWESOME gba stuff: even though there is no world tour, every time you beat the game you unlock world tour upgrades in three options menu that effect all the characters in the game! My fav is alpha 1 combos, also the intro is not there but the intro music is hidden in the cartridge, you can hear it on youtube. Even though the gba version is awesome crawfish always sacrifices everything to make sure all characters have their animation frames. I think it not a good trade off even though it's impressive.
In my opinion, the best version of this game will always be the PSP version. It has so much content to keep you busy along with the base game. The definitive portable Street Fighter.
@@Bloodreign1 Are you mad? The psp port Is the most complete version with all the previous characters and new exclusives characters/game modes added for that port. Saturn version is the ultimate . Hence the ridiculous prices on ebay . Psp is good but good luck playing it with people. With no local two player and a horrible dpad and analouge. Go for the dreamcast version . So you can then buy more fighting games which are arcade perfect
Saturn version is extremely nice, but the PS2 version is a bit better (for those of us who don't care about Reverse Dramatic Mode or World Tour, it is great) due to being emulation based off the CPSII version of vanilla Alpha 3, with the extra characters added in. There's really only one mode both versions have that I care about, and that is Survival Mode.
Hey man! Awesome video, very good comparisons! Also if you beat the gba version, all the world tour options are available as a cheat menu for the entire game!
Yeah there isnt a cheat code for the options screen, I only unlock them from beating the game, they appear in the options screen, my favorite is putting back in the 2 in 1 combos from alpha 1.
I really wish capcom would give alpha 3 the remix treatment since it's their biggest, most ambitious and cohesive street fighter game. I'd say do something where they combine the best elements of cvs and cvs2 and remix that but that would involve dealing with snk so that would be a lot harder to get going. Alpha 3 is theirs and since they're doing glory day games like everyone's favorite resident evil games it makes sense to do a fighter. I know they don't want to affect/cannibalize sfv but this would at least be great to do at the end of that games lifecycle and would be absolutely massive and not some "hd" version like they did with sf2 though I'd settle for it if it's all they were willing to do.
One thing that kinda ticks me off about the PS1 version is how the announcer says the wrong comment, for example when he says "It all depends on your skill!" I'm expecting him to say "Go for broke..." next, but instead, he freaking says "Face it straight!" and I'm like "What?! no! you got it all wrong announcer man!"

@@Darknight0681 You forgot Nintendo 64. It HAD 2D hardware.
This video comparison was out of thia world. Awesome work!! Please, do Xmen Vs Street Fighter sometime or Marvel vs Capcom 1. Anyway, subscribed!!
X-Men vs. SF only had 3 versions. Hardly worth the effort lol! SFA3 spans 7 platforms: arcade/CPS2, PS1, Saturn, DC/arcade NAOMOI, GBA, PSP, and the DEFINITIVE version on the PS2.
@@sdlock83 There is no definitive version because the PS2 version is missing exclusive content from the home releases. It's only the definition version for competitive play.
if sfa3 was to be released again, it should be the ps2 version but with the final alpha 3 from psp but with ps2 mvc, sfIII, etc modes included. basically merge the ps2 and psp versions together for the perfect version.
shinra358 I’d like to see an All-Net P-rus Multi or NesicaXLive arcade version based on the PSP release, plus a Windows/PC version.
That would be awesome but Crapcom is hella lazy & stupid, lol!
I Really Wish
But Capcom Are Stupid The 30th Anniversary Collection Was A Really Bad Collection. Vanilla Alpha 2 & 3 But No Alpha 2 Gold, Alpha 3 Max Or Hyper Street Fighter Alpha Or Hyper Street Fighter 2. They Didn’t Even Create An Hyper Street Fighter 3.

KOF howling blood and Guilty Gear was also a good port.
Really enjoyed this video! Would it be possible to record gameplay without the filters smearing the pixels? The look is very distracting, especially when showing handheld titles (GBA here, GBC in the Alpha 2 vid). Keep up the good work!
GBC was on the 1st Alpha, not Alpha 2
Will always love the PSP port for having the best characters to play as, Yun and Maki.
It’s not that the Dreamcast version is missing T. Hawk’s walking back animation. It’s that it didn’t exist until the Saturn version. Believe me, they could’ve more than put that in.
So much effort in your Work here! Thank you!
Madara Senpai DC game is a ps1 port?? Source...!?
Yeah the DC pad is not optimal for fighting games, however I hear there is an adaptor for the DC that allows you to use Saturn pads on it.
DC has a arcade stick.
Dreamcast version was an all together different game and couldn’t be used for arcade practice at all due to everything it altered. And it was a LOT. That and the PS1 had the absolute worst home conversions of the game. The first actually good port was the Saturn one up until the PS2 Anthology which based its ports entirely off the original CPS2 games instead of doing major altering of things.
you make the best comparisons on youtube. congratulations
Is there a followup to this for the 30th anniversary collection?
There's no official release/release date of SFA4, so no.
@@pinkmysteryman I'm pretty sure he's talking about Alpha 3 on the 30th Anniversary Collection being compared. It's no point in making a comparison video because all of the games on the collection are 100% emulated.
@@the757general2 2 Years Ago comment 💀 Yeah, I didn't realize that the 30th anniversary version was emulated at the time
This is a great series, insta sub.
Excellent comparison video.
PSP version is freakin awesome and the only disc I had for mine!
you do really good analysis. amazing.
More fighting games need the Alpha 3 announcer!
That´s super, great, excelent!
Awesome work!
Someone: Tell me something thats more rare than a diamond
Me: T.Hawk's walk back animation
The GBA version is very good than PSX, incredible
The GBA port was really something special. That little system really had something for everyone.
Great video man, you have to cover some more capcom classics; X-men CotA, Marvel Super Heroes, X-men vs SF, Marvel vs SF, Darkstalkers etc etc. Look forward to your upcoming vids :)
Nice to see all the tiny differences betwern these awesome consoles :) thanks a lot for the video!

PS2 and Saturn versions by far.
All of the versions are good (even the GBA version), but the PS2, Saturn, and PSP versions are the best with the latter having the most content

This is badass keep it 🤤👍🏾 Is just also described to this channel, I needed something like this...
Maybe it's because the Dreamcast version was the only version I played I didn't notice any issues with the gameplay.
im gonna subscribe after watching the comparisons really good job done on this video
i hop you do more of this, especially Arcade stuff.
PS2 SFA3 Upper is my go to version. It's the best of the lot even without the extra modes.
Although it's not shown in the video, i think the NAOMI version of alpha 3 upper is one of my favorite ports since it had more characters and used the arranged soundtrack. I think alpha 3 max on psp is the overall best port available.
PSP is the best port for me, more characters, the better, also Ingrid
Cant save without a 30 mb card..
PSP D-pad Sucks!
It's too Big!
I've always enjoyed SFA3 at home...on my PS1. I always wanted the DC version, but never got around to finding it.
Now though, I'll go ahead and find the Saturn version, as I've had both US and JPN Saturn consoles for a long time now. (And already have the 4MB cart, etc.)
Great video!
Get the Dreamcast Version. Easier to find and cheaper.
Plays better than the bloated PS2 emulated port on a collection.
Amazing work!! Thanks a lot, and get mi like.
2:47 to 2:59 PS1 R.Mika has the CPII Intro Pose and Winning Pose too, plus the one when she runs with the Tire.
5:21 PS1 has that intro too, but you have to unlock it
IMO SFA3 was maybe Capcom's best work on the PS1. Very impressive version considering the limitations, and how bad SFA2 was on PS1.
Resident Evil 2 was Capcom's best work on the PS1 but SFA3 and Mega Man X4 and X5 along with Strider 2 were close 2nd's!
What does the Saturn version look like without the ram cart ?
It looks like an error message ;-)
It doesn't work without it.
fafling so the saturn needs an add on to run it, I think that’s kind of an important thing to know.
Since the Saturn version was released late in the system's life, Capcom considered that the target audience probably already had a RAM cartridge from a previous game, and didn't want a watered down version.
fafling true enough
@hitsuka no tsukimiko 4 MB cart came with the game
Great video, here some AWESOME gba stuff: even though there is no world tour, every time you beat the game you unlock world tour upgrades in three options menu that effect all the characters in the game! My fav is alpha 1 combos, also the intro is not there but the intro music is hidden in the cartridge, you can hear it on youtube.
Even though the gba version is awesome crawfish always sacrifices everything to make sure all characters have their animation frames. I think it not a good trade off even though it's impressive.
How saturn loading times were about 1/3 of those on PS1! A real advantage over its direct competitor the PS1
In my opinion, the best version of this game will always be the PSP version.
It has so much content to keep you busy along with the base game.
The definitive portable Street Fighter.
Well, if you like broken hitboxes and missing animation frames, and playing on that nightmare of a d-pad, sure.
@@Bloodreign1 Are you mad? The psp port Is the most complete version with all the previous characters and new exclusives characters/game modes added for that port.
Thoes lost frames or the supposed broken hit boxes are insignificant compared with all that

But the absolute worst d-pad for fighting games, other than the Dreamcast controller ugh.
@@Bloodreign1 im with you bro
Saturn version is the ultimate . Hence the ridiculous prices on ebay .
Psp is good but good luck playing it with people. With no local two player and a horrible dpad and analouge.
Go for the dreamcast version . So you can then buy more fighting games which are arcade perfect
ps2>>dreamcast version
Saturn version is extremely nice, but the PS2 version is a bit better (for those of us who don't care about Reverse Dramatic Mode or World Tour, it is great) due to being emulation based off the CPSII version of vanilla Alpha 3, with the extra characters added in. There's really only one mode both versions have that I care about, and that is Survival Mode.
Hey man! Awesome video, very good comparisons! Also if you beat the gba version, all the world tour options are available as a cheat menu for the entire game!
GXSCChater just look up the cheat codes for the gba version
Yeah there isnt a cheat code for the options screen, I only unlock them from beating the game, they appear in the options screen, my favorite is putting back in the 2 in 1 combos from alpha 1.
Excellent content, thanks!

Very helpful, thank you!
Why is the dreamcast music so off? It sounds really good in game so I'm guessing your capture equipment didnt like the dreamcast signal??
WTF! How do I unlock SFA 3 Upper in Alpha anthology? Somebody help
Are you using emulation on the Dreamcast or is the disc scratched, music sounds choppy on this video.
So.. the best versions are Arcade, PS2, PSP, Saturn?
In Alpha 3 the cpu order is the same with each character?
Dude, are you all right? Haven't seen your update since one year or so ago, hope you are all right. You know, covid 19 is a disaster in the world.
What happened to the audio? It cuts out sometimes!
I'm choosing SF Alpha 3 for Dreamcast hands down and as far as handheld I'm choosing the GBA! I'm gonna pick that version up when I get a chance
0:07 False strike. Perfect.
Saturn baby! And liked and Sub'd.
And that's the way uh uh I like it! 3!!!
the audio glitches are from the emulators or were them in the consoles too?
PSP and PS2 for me.
Nah, the extra characters fit in really well.
Make comparisons from World Heroes Perfect, Fatal Fury 3 and Real Bout 1
For you guys complaining about how ridiculously pricey the Saturn port is just install a universal mod chip or buy the Action Replay 4M Plus cart flashed with Psuedo Saturn and you'll be able to play a backup SFA3 without buying a shitload of money on it. They're sites like etsy that sell repro games.
@Rap Lawyer the Pseudo Saturn cart flashed with Action Replay 3-1 has the 1MB and 4MB ram feature meaning you can play games like Street Fighter Zero 3 and X-Men vs Street Fighter. You can find the Pseudo Saturn on sites like Ebay and Esty.

Maybe we'll see the marvel series in the future?
Etroport, please, help me: how ddo you do tu use "correct aspect ratio" with scanlines? What emulator are you using? Are your screen resolution 1920 x 1080?
You can change the volume of the SFX in the PSP version in the options menu
Good job! Hey, make a video about Darkstalkers, this can be nice!
What happend if you didnt had the 4 MB cart for the saturn version?
The game won't even boot up without the 4MB RAM cart.
I would love if Capcom did one more definitive version of Alpha3 including all 38 characters, World Tour, Tag and Dramatic battle mode and the extra goodies and -isms from the Anthology version and color editor.
Well, we're getting SFZ3 Upper in Capcom Fighting Collection 2 which comes out soon. The sharp filter looks excellent, training mode, online obviously, save states for single player mode, music box, art gallery. I know it's an arcade collection but hopefully they do something similar for MAX by the end of the decade rofl, dramatic battle mode is just like one of the most fun things ever, there's so many insane combos to do
