What got me most as a kid was how competent he was. He instantly goes to the right house, immediately finds the trap door, and would've caught them here, if not for the interruption. It wasn't scary so much as unnerving. Bad guys were supposed to be blunderers.
Robert Helpmann a very talented and under rated dancer/actor. He danced for the Australian Ballet company for many years...this was his most famous role I give him props for his performance
Robert Helpmann was 59 when he played the child catcher. its amazing, he really dooesnt look it. this is such a memorable part of my childhood tho, it scared me so much :)

I always remember the child catcher with a bigger nose. Memories are weird like that. Anyway, he always scared the living crap out of me when I was little.
This guy cared the bejesus out of me after watching this movie. l didn't trust the ice cream for the next few summers, l didn't even approach the truck when l saw it.

Absolutely love Robert Helpmann🖤 and known as Bobby through out his career being a wonderful Ballet dancer but he was so the perfect choice👌🏻for this rule and no one could do it better than him in my opinion.💯🖤Robert was made for this rule and his character is very mysterious and so awesome! Such a fan of his love him!🖤
He's an exceptional reference to the *Wicked Witch of the West* (black clothing, his butterfly net as a broomstick, long pointy nose, black hat, black hair, croaky laugh). Anyone agree?!
Yes, and not only that, but Robert Helpmann, who played the part, was a notorious homosexual. Leave to brazen Hollywood to cast a homosexual in the role of a child predator.
I have a feeling that Roald Dahl created the Child Catcher. It's said that he wrote the movie so I'm sure he did this guy. He often creates villains that they're adults who hate kids.
"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" is a book written by Ian Fleming, the same man who wrote the James Bond series. I never knew that Roald Dahl wrote the script for the movie. Interesting.
Sadly reminds me of child protective service 'officers'. Still lolololol at- 1:36 The baroness will have your teeth for a necklace, and your eyeballs for earrings.
@BenShirai not to mention the guy who played the Child Catcher was a world famous dancer (but very popular in Europe and Australia especially) back in the day.
That's one heck of an actor. He was so kind to children in real life, but the character scares the you-know-what out me even now that I'm 40+ years old.
Roald Dahl ("Charlie and The Chocolate Factory," "The Witches," "The B.F.G.," "Matilda," "James and The Giant Peach") helped write the screenplay for this film. Matter-of-fact, he came up with the "Child Catcher" character. He was always so great at this--creating perfect baddies for his children's stories. Dahl forever--children's answer to Charles Dickens. Helpmann nails it --him and Van Dyke. The adults are the scene-stealing lovable funny-uncles. The hallmark of any good kiddie film.
Sir Robert Helpmann played the Child Catcher. He's just a rather thin, gaunt man. Just check out his photo in his wikipedia entry and you'll see it's him.
How many children did this guy catch besides the two in the movie? what else dos he use to lore them out? How much did the Baron pay him? Did they send them to a conentration camp?
To be honest I was never scared by the child catcher as a kid...he was just a baddie, and I thought he and the Baron were very entertaining in their vehement dislike of children, which is pretty comical really if you think about it. I think the Child Catcher is more 'retro scary' in that, as adults, people look back and see all sorts of 'connotations' around the character and sort of retroactively make him scarier than he was at the time because of them.
He scared us as kids and we loved it. At least I did. Such a captivating and dynamic performer. Truly an artist!
this guy gave me nightmares as a kid - a testament to his amazing performance - scared the living hell out of me !!! awesome character
I was privilaged to have met the Late Robert Helpman who played the child catcher all those years ago.Charming man. Trained at the Royal Ballet.
What got me most as a kid was how competent he was. He instantly goes to the right house, immediately finds the trap door, and would've caught them here, if not for the interruption. It wasn't scary so much as unnerving. Bad guys were supposed to be blunderers.
I think he had something of a supernatural ability, at least that was my impression as a kid.
this is one of the most traumatic scenes of my childhood

He certainly moves like a dancer!

His name is The Child Catcher. You've got to give him the respect he deserves as the dastardly villain that he is by calling him by the right moniker
All of my friends are so scared of him and I can do the best impression of him. It freaks them out so much. LMAO XD
Dude, I was scared of this creep as a kid...
I'm 20, and he STILL creeps me out.
this is the only character that I remember ever being properly scared of as a child..

That awkward moment when you realize that the Child Catcher is also the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland (with Fiona Fullerton and Peter Sellers)

Right through my childhood.

Loved the jack in the box disguises.
1800's version of Child "Protective" Services.
I'm in this costume for Halloween. That eye roll/head turn combo he does upon discovering the boxes is EERIE!
Taken from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 1998 VHS.
I love the fact that the same guy that wrote the James Bond books wrote this story
robert helpman perfect choice

It's sooo funny when the child catcher discovered Mr Pott and the others disguised as jack-in-the-box!
He was a wonderful actor very scary and all the cast is so wonderful and loved by us all.
I always remember the child catcher with a bigger nose. Memories are weird like that. Anyway, he always scared the living crap out of me when I was little.

took my grandson to see the stage show . god i was even scared .
This guy cared the bejesus out of me after watching this movie. l didn't trust the ice cream for the next few summers, l didn't even approach the truck when l saw it.
I was always confused of the gender of the child catcher
I think he’s male (and he’s referred to as such) but I think they made the character androgynous for the sake of the uncanny valley effect

Benny freakin' Hill!!!
I still have nightmares 30 years after waching this damm film
The Child Catcher is in the film for about five minutes and he completely steals the show. I can't remember anyone else who did that.
Robert Helpmann. Superb.
this dude scared the childhood out of me.
Wonderful and amazing actor very scary he did a wonderful job .
oh god this guy still scares me! one of the scariest characters going lol

+NatterWithNat exactly. It's a free world.
I'd say he's the male equivalent of her, for all the reasons you mentioned.
The late great Sir Robert Helpmann an Australian icon of the arts brilliant ballet dancer and actor may he rest in peace !
omg he scared the living daylights out of me :C
I have a feeling that Roald Dahl created the Child Catcher. It's said that he wrote the movie so I'm sure he did this guy. He often creates villains that they're adults who hate kids.

Benny Hill!
The toymaker (Benny Hill) is buried in a cemetery located near me, in Southampton, UK.
That's one heck of an actor. He was so kind to children in real life, but the character scares the you-know-what out me even now that I'm 40+ years old.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!! He still scares the stuffin outta me :'(
He's MUCH more scary in the actual broadway musical!
This was a lot scarier when I watched this in the late 90s! Was so creepy haha
2:20-The child catcher gets surprised by 4 Jack-in-Boxes.
haha i always got freaked out when i was little at the part where they burst out of the boxes.. lol
Oh what nightmares hath he wrought
I seem to recall that Benny Hill also used to do the toymaker character from the film on his TV show.
Very difficult to put in him a single artistic category isn't it? If acting was secondary in his career, we must give him many cheers!
That guy still scares the shit out of me.

I always wondered why Benny Hill got the idea to audition for this part.
Childcatcher used to scare the fuck out of me lol...
your not alone
I'm 17 and I would run like hell if I ever saw this guy in real life.
Used to scare the crap out of me when I was younger , still creepy as hell lol
no worries. still scares me too and im 21. Damn good Villian

love the fact benny hill is the toy maker
The toy maker didn't think through his career choices.
I seem to be the only one who wasn't scared of him as a kid. He was and is my favorite character.

I'd love to get a job as a childcatcher. Seriously folks, the actor playing the Childcatcher danced with Margot Fonteyn.
How many children did this guy catch besides
the two in the movie? what else dos he use to lore them out? How much did the Baron pay him?
Did they send them to a conentration camp?
@BenShirai Whether you think so or not, there was facial wax add-ons used on the nose.
That Child Catcher scared the f*** out of me.
i used to hide behind the couch during this part
Why didn't the toymaker just remove the child catcher's hat and smack him on the head? I mean it's Benny Hill!
He was still leveling-up his power-levels in those days.
is that woodcarver guy Benny Hill? Really reminds me of that scene in Inglorious Bastards. "you have to know where to look " Creepy
YES That is Benny Hill :)
So what age do you have to become for the Chiled Catcher to no longer be able to smell you out ?
this is horrifying
@BenShirai Who played as the child catcher?
Dear Lord I am almost 48 years old and STILL scared of the child catcher lol! GREAT MOVIE
