  • A friend of ours stopped by Costco and found the new Intense 951 mountain bike that they are now selling throughout their stores. Well...there might need to be a little bit more training on assembly! The crazy part is that there are multiple stores where this has happened that people are sharing. It reminds me of the Walmart assembly pictures from back in the day.

Intense makes pretty nice bikes; mountain bikers generally need to be able to do some basic repairs out in the woods; tightening loose fasteners, fixing a broken chain, changing/patching a flat. I wouldn’t think twice about going through and readjusting and setting up a bike for my preferences anyways… if the price was right and I wanted a high quality bike I’d be happy to pick one of these up.

Unless you already have the knowledge and the tools to do 95% of what's required and want to save a lot of money.
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of supporting local bike shops and when I have the money I will buy I'm strapped and if I can get a lot more bike for my money with the tradeoff being time and labor to build and maintain it, I'll choose that.
Bikes are very easy to work on and for the vast majority of work I can do it myself and or buy the tools and do it myself. The whole 8dea of a shop doing free maintenance for a year or something just isn't attractive to me when I can do it on my schedule.
I'm a janitor not a dentist but I want that dentist level bike. I'm glad there are dentists out there who have no problem dropping $500 on new tires and a service but that's not me.
What the hell is going on with tire pricing?
In Canada, the good tires cost $150!
      Trudeaunomics.

Bike tech who works for an assembly company.
You get paid per build aaand the company has their way of building. The pay is trash and most people who are assemblers... cant tune a derailleur.
So, ive worked in shops and ive built and refurbished bikes. I started working and realized i was doing "too much". Boss man hands me an impact driver, smacks the grease out of my hands and tells me its gonna take 25 builds at least to make a good day. I say all this to say the industry is all about incentives. Quality is a factor and keeping the stores happy, too. But, the standards are beyind subliminal. Ive seen fls pass off deathtraps ad complete builds. I cant tell you how many star nuts, inner tubes, stems and crank arms ive had to replace from other builders. They dont want us to use grease and the time it would take for a proper build is not worth the $7.00.
So, you get stuff like this when the bossman and the store manager put their fastest assembler on the job.

I recently was on an outdoor fair and i recognized a bike shop from my tonnenweise which i have never visited before. I wanted to try out their E-Fully by Focus and instantly recognized that the fork shows the wrong direction and the brake disc is on the right side, not the left. I told the seller about that. He had no damn clue what i was talking about. He asked his coworkers and none of them could help him either. They brought a bike to the fair but cant tell a shit about it, they didnt even know there was a big mistake in the build done. I told them to fire that builder or to yell the crap outta them because if i didnt tell them they would not have sold that bike in years. I even thought about working there just to fix their mistakes but i think i would have gotten sick doing this.
