I think streaming changed that. Back then CDs were selling like hot cakes and singles were cheaper than albums. Many kids in the 2000s didn't have that many albums in their bedroom but they had an insane amount of singles and labels understood that. It was all about the first single and the video for it even when the album dropped it was always "This song on the album will be the next single" they never talked about the other songs on it
Now with streaming people don't really care about singles they listen to the album and chooses the songs they like from it. Sometimes the whole album drops on the artist's UA-cam channel so you can even listen to it for free. So artists now have better crafted albums all around

I think the fact hip-hop surpassed pop as the most accessible commercial genre also played a role in pushing many pop artists toward creativity. Making simple & catchy tunes won't fly anymore. Experimentation with genres is risky, yet the best way to refresh and improve artists' music.

    • @TheGeorgeD13

The more recent idea of each album being an "Era" of an artists' career has done wonders, imo, in pretty much forcing many artists to continually push themselves to do different things and experiment with their sound.
Many fans today EXPECT their favorite artists and pop stars to do different stuff from album to album. People wouldn't stand for something like what AC/DC did with making pretty much the same shit their entire careers (don't get me wrong, I love those guys, but there wouldn't be an AC/DC in that way today because of fan expectations being so different).
For me, this has made all genres, but especially Pop, more varied than ever before.

Hit the nail on the head. When will people understand, that much like any other genre, there's good pop music and bad pop music. The problem with the people complaining about Fantano's reviews is that they assume ALL pop music is bad by virtue of it being pop. Like, no, bestie. Yes, there's a bunch of shitty pop music being churned out every day (think David Guetta, Bebe Rexha, Imagine Dragons, Tones and I, etc.) but clearly Fantano is only praising the genuinely GOOD ones. Or at least the ones he enjoyed a lot or think is well-made.

The best take I've read is that mainstream music isn't as 'genre specific' anymore. With new artists and proyects experimenting with new sounds, songs aren't purely aren't "pop" or "r&b" anymore, instead you have them grouped by themes or emotions. Spotify playlists now have have some really weird names to group their music, like "making breakfast on your birthday" or "driving on a rainy day while remembering your childhood". This with the ability of social media apps like Tiktok to make otherwise unknown artists famous makes for what I think Anthony describes as "Better pop", new mainstream songs or albums now mix different sounds and makes if feel refreshing, even if not everything new is of high quality.

I think the biggest difference between the pop music of today and say 15 years ago is that everything is niche now. The Internet has freed artists who still want to do pop music to allow them to almost make multiple sub genres of pop music, whereas 20 years ago there’s only one or two different types of pop music you could do you could do pop rock, or you could do pop R&B. But the Internet is democratized sounds.

Like, I can picture that if we were in 2003, a bunch of Olivia Rodrigo wannabes would pop in the charts to catch up with her, and although I’m not denying that there may be some out there nowadays, they don’t get as much as exposure because music has become more about relatability than about what’s trending right now. What I don't think a lot of people realize about great pop music is that it's one of the hardest genres to get right. While its sad that it is, almost by definition, designed to sell and be easily digestable (I'm not including outliers like Kate Bush and Bjork), its still very very difficult to make a song that addictive and memorable and, let's face it, melodic. It's no coincidence that when an artist is called poppy (when said in both a negative and a positive sense), they're usually called so because they're very melodic. Kurt Cobain being a great example.

    • @thatboynelly
      @thatboynelly 9 місяців тому +34

I honestly couldn't agree more with this take. People love to shit on pop music, and I was absolutely one of those people in my teen years. I'm 25 and I didn't really start coming around to enjoying what I consider to be "good" pop music until the last 4 or 5 years. And I understand some of the reasons why people shit on it. It's often formulaic, it's often lacking emotional depth, it's often overproduced, so on and so forth. There's a million generic pop songs made every year that will never really make an impact anywhere for those reasons among others. While it could be considered easy to crap out a pop song that follows all the conventions and standards of pop music, it is absolutely one of the most difficult genres to do right and do well. It's not easy to craft an earworm that people can't get out of their head whether they want it there or not. It's not easy to craft a melody that is immediately memorable. It's not easy to craft a song that can be genuinely enjoyed by almost anyone.
I remember reading an interview The Weeknd did back when he released Beauty Behind The Madness where he said something to the effect of how he could release 100 more albums like House Of Balloons without issue because it was easy for him and without challenge, but that making pop music was difficult. People definitely underestimate what it takes to make great pop.

For anybody who likes a pop-y sound and digestability I would recommend listening to Tomoo, she’s a Japanese artist who makes songs that I think are a bit closer to western popular music than most jpop is. I thought of this because her new song super ball just released today (it’s only on yt as of right now for some reason) and it’s great imo, especially 2:23 onward in the song was just so good! I would highly recommend listening to it along with my other two favorite songs of hers, othello (Osero in Japanese) and yume wa sametemo. If you like those I would also recommend yoake no Kiki e, honey boy, and be what you want to. in 2006 music wasn't even seen as a real form of art, it was just rubbish to be sold, and the same happened with Rock before that and Jazz before that. part of this was just pretension of people who thought they were better than others and a little racism/misogyny, another part is that Jazz, Rock and Pop artists started to take themselves seriously throughout the evolution of their respective musical genres. Olivia Rodrigo and Billie have much more creative freedom than any other mainstream teenage female singer in HISTORY, while Britney who sometimes managed to write and release good pop songs like Everytime was forced 99.9% of the time to record what others told her to.
Taylor only managed to write a more adult language on her albums when she was 27 years old (TWENTY SEVEN YEARS OLD), many don't know but she fought with her old record company to be able to release pop music in 2014 and she only had the freedom to do what she wanted 100% in his 7th album aged 28/29.

I do see the striking similarity to the way you described MTV and the music industry to modern day UA-cam, where increasingly famous creators have to process and package digestible morsels of content down to algorithms in the precise, regurgitated format that maintains their level of success. And while I love your content, I think it's worth noting that while popular music has gotten better overall, UA-cam content has not.

Like he briefly mentioned too, as a UA-cam channel where it’s your livelihood, you gotta review what is expected to make in some money. Sadly amazing albums that are super obscure is not going to get very many click (unless the internet did some magic, like how famous Fishmans music got because of the internet, but that’s a later thing we can’t really predict). So, he would be making a slight sacrifice for the channel by reviewing something like a sprain album, because he feels it’s so good at least a few more people should listen to it. But if he did that all the time, the channel would likely be impacting his livelihood drastically in a negative way, and people who wanna see albums they are familiar with to some degree (a lot of peeps are like that, so he HAS to make a Drake album review, cuz dude, the guy doesn’t need the pos/neg exposure, we just want to react to Melon’s opinion) may even leave the channel when they see bands they have never seen before being reviewed constantly. This is also why we never get mid obscure albums reviews (not worth reviewing a mid obscure band with a brand big as this). It’s usually only very good or very bad (which also extremes play in viewership too). Lol
It’s harder when you have a business, can’t put 100% into it depending on your outlooks, but there is thankfully passion and good in what’s popular too. And it makes seeing those good (and sometimes bad lol) obscure things we should hear all the better.

There are so many musical tropes that have not aged well from that era: the all-mids radio-like vocal embellishments, the digital cymbal flourishes, the "sforzando" string synths (like in every NSYNC song), really the general overexcitement about new developments in synth technology, and of course the spoken word intro or bridge conversation / argument / affair discovery lol
