Steel wool will scratch the Chrome and leave little pieces of metal in the scratches and the rust will reappear. Use bronze wool you can rub as hard as you want it will not scratch the Chrome but yet it'll take everything else off just use a little oil for lubricant with it. Used to use it a lot when I restored old bicycles... Works great
Shame the other viewers didn't get a kick out of it. I like it even though it's pretty rough, it shows a lot of love. I'd mostly practice welding to firm up that frame and patch up the body holes, then sand and touch up the body parts. Also probably pressure wash it inside and out... It is the kind of thing I'd love to see more of it's journey, there's surprisingly little about it online. Do the new owners have a channel? Hopefully they won't just part it out or engine swap it, since you clearly got that big old engine running and it seemed solid. Crossing my fingers you asked a few questions.
Steel whool all the way just done right not dry and I'm right cause he even said his voice is messed up from breathing it in....made first comment b4 I heard him said that
I feel like people would have liked The Bondo Express more if it was gettinga full restoration. Not necessarily new parts, but just less jank: Cover up the gaping holes and maybe some bracing welds on the frame to stop the flexing. Oh well, good luck to what ever the new owners are doing.
That’s what I was thinking. He only bought it for $750. It was making good content and he has literally put way more money into things that are a dime a dozen for content. I’m like “would I rather watch you do a little resto mod on a cool 4x4 mega truck or watch you replace a water pump on a Jeep Grand Cherokee” I mean that’s a no brainer. The stuff he was complaining about was simple things. Can’t even finish painting the 2 front wheels atleast.
Good luck to the new owner of the cool Toyota monster pickup, figure $40000 should bring that thing back to reasonably good looks/function, right? Haha. Nice trick with the fishing line.
Of course whenever you start working on that boat again, you, Josh, Gabe, Jake, and Elliott need to do a parody of “I’m On A Boat!”. Might make Hoovie and/or Wizard jealous! 🤣
Wetsand with aluminum foil and coke. Saw that on mythbusters years ago, they had an old work truck bumper, wasn't quite as dodgy as the one on the Toyota, but it literally looked brand new and they didn't even really scrub all that hard.
This takes me back. My dad a 1982 Hilux 2.2 diesel manual and it rusted through a few times before he sold it for a 1992 Isuzu. Loved both those trucks. Probably both still going somewhere in some form since this is South Africa.
I kinda like that JR isn't afraid to take a chance on low cost/no cost stupid stuff. He also takes chances on high cost stupid stuff. His policy is:. Got an itch? Scratch it!
Can you please have these guys come back with the truck when it's done? I'd love to see it restored. My 4-year-old watched your monster truck episodes with me. He's a big fan of Grave Digger from Blippi.
I love your channel! But legitimately I've only been notified about two of your videos about this truck including this one and you're already selling it! Don't know if you have posted other videos about it and UA-cam has not notified me! But was hoping to see you do more fun stuff with this truck but I guess not!
I didn't hate the truck but I knew it was waaayyy too much time and money to get it back to right. I was just hoping you wouldn't fall down that rabbit hole lol. Happy-sad to see it go!
@@WatchJRGo kinda looked like the most efficient restore might be a new Hilux body and LS swap? If you leave the read doors normal opening it seems liek it would be less work than restoring it as is?
Steel Wool works even awesomer if you use 0000 plus Turtle Wax Chrome Polish. That's been my go-to for years, even on old jukeboxes with impossible to replace chrome.
I've had really good luck with copper pot-scrubber scouring pads - they don't leave any rust-prone residue and do a bang-up job on chrome or alloy surfaces.
For future reference, late 90s (Vortec) Chevy engines used a factory gear reduction starter that doesn't have any problem cranking high compression engines. They're a direct bolt-in on earlier engines, you only need shorter bolts to attach the starter to the engine.
Crazy to see where this ended up and the shape that it’s in. I worked with the original owner/builder in the late 90’s when this was just a 4 door. Was a great running truck with the 350 Chevrolet powerplant that took home many trophies from central Kansas car shows as it was a one of one custom build, but unfortunately, was like riding a horse with two legs that weren’t the same length because the suspension wasn’t up to par. The builder (2 Chilly’s custom welding) decided to cut it in half again and add the Gulwing doors after a four foot long crack that was about an inch and a half deep and an inch wide developed in the roof in the early 2000’s. Shame to see what has happened to it in the decades since but not a total shock as most custom builds don’t age well when they have nearly a hundred pounds of body filler in them and aren’t stored in a climate controlled environment.
I think the treads on those tires are directional to remove/squish mud out from the treads. I think the front right and rear left will push debris towards the center of the tire thus I think the front right tire/rim should be exchanged for the rear left.
To make the chrome look new use Brasso Duraglit Metal Polish Wadding I did a motorbike my uncle had abandoned with it because I was 14 and bored he saw it and remembered how much he loved it. It was back on the road that week.
I really wanted to see you race Westin Champlin. Several months ago he bought a Lincoln Towncar 4x4. I though a race between that and the Bondo Express would have been awsome.
The Porsche repair got me thinking, we spend so much time, effort, energy, research, ingenuity, sweat and elbow grease to bring our vehicles from broken to reliably functional. The average person just sees another car or truck running around, but we know what it took to take them back from the brink
That is a Hilux but it is pretty beat so hopefully whoever buys it brings it back to nice. You got it running and moving and that's a huge plus for the next owner and actually running and moving should help get a tiny bit more. I usually like to use brillo pads, I think the soap and water help when you're polishing away. Glad you got enough to make it worth the effort and money you have in it, it was awesome content for the channel. Weight? Scientific measurement... A LOT...
I wonder if this is a case of "the Greater Fool". Good luck finding him. Actually I imagine you'll have no trouble. This current era seems to be well supplied with them.
