Thanks so much for your video! First year apprentice electrician here so I was stoked to be able to fix my own GHD. Have to say I had it 10years+ before the fuse blew!
Thanks this helped me fix this item, it wasn't immediately obvious that there was a fuse in these until I saw this video. Initially after repair they powered up but there was a rapid beeping and no heat to the thongs. I read this happens when tongs are less than 5 degrees, so I ran a hair dryer over them and they came back to life.
I’m so shocked, I know nothing about any of this, but was able to figure out the issue with my straightener and fix it very inexpensively. Thank you so much for this video!
I fixed my wifes straighteners for less than a tenner for a set of thermal fuses off amazon saving her £100 if she had to buy a new ones, many thanks for this vid , your the man!
Great video mate. I was given a set of these from someone as they did not work. Tested the fuse as shown here, had blown, ordered new fuse form the UK which arrived today. Fitted it and off she goes. Great job. thank you.
Watched this video, bought a cheap digital multimeter from Amazon (£6.99), completed the tests and found the fault. £1.49 to fix. My daughter is delighted. Thank you so much for this video 🙏
thank you!! GHD would not replace my straighter and you just saved me $200. you are awesome!!! plus got to learn how to make my screwdrivers magnetic!! thanks again!
Was scratching my head for 10 minutes trying to figure the spring out! Look at the spring, push the long piece of the spring all the way down and that makes the short part of the spring face upwards. Get the other side of the straighteners and push down diagonally so you're forcing the short piece of the spring towards the long piece! Hope this kind of makes sense for anyone struggling like I did :)
Nice video, very helpful indeed! Fixed my wife's prized mk5's within a few days. I wish my multimeter had audio tone for continuancy but got the job done 👍
Thanks for the video, very useful in knowing how they work. So, mine have correct resistance and polarity readings proving the cable, fuse are correct however they still dont work. Ive accessed the top plate and there's voltage across the circuit board but they still dont work. What would the problem be, could it be the circuit board on the top plate?
This has been amazing. I wish I hadn't thrown my old ones out. However I got right to the end but snapped the clip off that holds the new thermal fuse. I've put the broken bit sideways, but is it possible to replace the clasp. It works perfectly but they belong to my goddaughter. Not sure if the clip just keeps it in place as the fuse is screwed in firmly. What would you suggest. Is it just to keep it still?
Hi great video, I have a question please, my wifes straightners are GHD 5 one side heats up but the other does not. I have resistance of 79.04 Ohm on the heater and the fuse is Ok. What else can I check for this heater please. the side which does not work is the switch side.
does it fail because the component just went bad or is it another part causing it to fail? I ran a continuity test on the heater power and it was fine, is that the only test needed after replacing the part? Thanks for your video.
What would cause an intermittent rapid flashing red LED? Also a kinda crackling noise can be heard whilst the LED flashes rapidly I've tested the main power cable to be sound
I'd like to use the plates for a project and was wondering if they can be powered directly somehow? If they take up to a straight 240v, does that mean the voltage can be reduce and thus adjust the temp? Thanks in advance
Hi, just found this video and trying to have a go at fixing them. I've take them apart and testing the plate and the fuse with the metre. The plates coming back at 70ohms but the fuse is coming back at 00.2? Would that suggest the fuse needs replacing? Just getting a constant beeping noise and there not warming up. Thank for the video by the way 👍🏻
Hello, i took my north american GHD 4.2B model to europe. I attempted to use it with a converter and it didnt heat up. It started beeping. I am back in north america now and my straightner will not turn on. Any ideas what this may be? And any possible solutions? Thank you so much!
Should of checked the thermistor, if the thermal fuse has failed then thermistor may have become detached, for much older ghds you will find that thermal fuse has failed due to age. Also thermal fuse will face if top heater element has failed. Apart from that nice video.
@channelengineer I have a pair of ghd mk3, checked the cable and connector all fine, metered the thermal fuse thats okay, but still dead, do the resistors on the early ghd mk3's go like they do in the mk4's? The 2 x resistors on the pcb are r14 and r13 but both measure continuity whilst on the pcb, i am stumped what else it could be.....unless because i did not remove the thermal fuse from the pcb when i measured it and gave me the wrong result,it beeped
Hello, we having a problem with my wife’s straighteners, we’re getting mains power to the circuit board, both plates and the thermal fuse test okay, but they are still dead, anything else which could be faulty? Great vid by the way.
hi, i have GHD 5.0, have replaced thermal fuse because it was broken, but now when turn on i listen beep and only one resistor is warm, the resistor near termistor is cool. What i can check ?
I like the vernacular. The one I have in my workshop at the moment is being "a right pain in the arse" too. Plug, cable, heat fuse and plates all test good so I am at the end of the video and I haven't found the fault. More probing to do then!
Checked first plate like you said, seems to be the thermal fuse, opened other side. It configuration was different. 2 thick wires going to heating plate and 2 tiny wires going in behind circuit board to solder. Got ohms reading on plate. Any thoughts?
+RJ Moreno I repair ghd all the time, if you see any sign of that then a new power cable cord is needed, also if the R8 or R11 resister has failed then inspection of power cord is required fully tested.
Hi, got a set of ghd 4.2b, checked the R8 & R11 resistors there fine, checked the thermal fuse as on the video and that too is ok, is there a way of testing the themistor plate without totally taking it out, becuse there still not working? Thanks
yes. open the top part and should see 4 wires going to the board some models they are soldered on others screwed. use a multimeter on resistance and measure the hotplate should be similar values as shown in video. if OK measure the other wires going to the thermistor these are normally the inner 2 wires and should be around 100k ohms out of circuit (in circuit can't remember the resistance) but if you heat or cool the plate the resistance should change if not you got thermistor problems. it's not uncommon for it to drop off the plate use some heat transfer adhesive to reattach and try again.
Hi, I have just checked all components following your video step by step but all connections seem absolutely fine. I checked the other heating element which seems fine and all wires from one circuit board to the other and their all ok. Checked continuity from the plug right the way to the live and neutral on the circuit board and again all ok. Can't figure out what the problem is. I can hear the electric buzzing but led is not lighting up when turning on, although continuity is fine between the wires. Any other ideas? If you could take a look if not it would be much appreciated.
Daniel Langrish if you have cheaked everything it might be the mains suppression capacitor on the main board has failed but can't for sure with out looking at them myself. normally a crackling/arching sound means you have a cable fault. Double check the cable and socket in straighteners for any burn/scorch marks.
Thermistor my gf was doing that they were working when you were clamping them together just flashing no beeps sometimes heated up sometimes they did not, its best to chnge the cheap things then move onto the expensive stuff.
check the other plate. The thermistor probably detached from the heating plate. You will have to remove that plate de-solder the thermistor from the pcb and use some thermal conductive adhesive to reattach it to the underside of the heating plate or buy a new plate with the thermistor attached. both options mean you have to de-solder the thermistor and solder it back on again.
Thermal fuse checks out ok, getting 120 volts to the board, heating element has normal resistance, all components on the board look good, any idea what else it could be?
I bought ghd platinum white styler Used only three times, then began whistling sound shows them with a red light, not heat, what's the problem and what should I do? Please tell me
@channelengineer Couldn't you of testing the thermal fuse for continuity whilst it was still connected in the circuit to the pcb? or would it of given a false result
Hi mark My ghd's model 5.0 aren't working and I think it's something to do with the fuse, would I be able to send you them to repair if possible please?
what do if the strightner did not show any thing on screen and the screen light is on and some time it just show 180°C this problem start when I use it on wet hair one time by mistake plz help
Sounds like your GHDs are in shiver mode. This can happen if your GHDs are to cold to operate usually around 8 degrees its a common problem during cold times of the year or leaving the in cool locations. Make sure to leave them unplugged in a warm room for about 30mins to an hour longer the better. Don't force them to heat up on a hot surface like radiator or use a hair dryer; if they are very cold you can get condensation building up in side and make the problem worse. If this does not work the thermistor maybe faulty and needs testing.
Mark Rennie sounds like you could have a loose mains cable/connection, faulty switch or the mains suppression capacitor has failed. open them up and look for any black and scorched areas. had a similar problem.
sounds like thats the faulty component and needs replacing. problem is usually this part is only sold with the board (pain in the ass). you can get replacement boards from www.ghdspares.co.uk. If you want to hunt about for the component itself to desolder and solder the new one on. look up polyester film suppression capacitors, capacitance = 470nF, Voltage = 275V, suppression Type = X2 the match it to the size in your straighteners.
nice one thanks, looks like £20 delivered which isn't too bad.. Massive thanks for your help. If I have to solder, would need soldering iron and more good luck with my shaky hand :)
these are the same model in the video and I received the spare parts and replaced and it beeps like normal, but the side with the switch doesn't heat up at all.. the other side does? I even swapped the old board for that side back and it is the same. Any ideas please?

I used my mom's straightener and it doesn't work anymore..i shouldn't do this kind of stuff by myself so i'll just bring the straightener to some uh repair shop idk
Thank you so much for filming this 7 years ago. Helped me fix my wife's GHDs today (that stopped working in 2007).
Thank you so much. It was R11 on mine which had a hole in it. Followed your instruction and saved myself £120. Thanks again

I'm so proud of myself I fixed my wife's ghd v with only 7 pounds that she was thinking of throwing and buying new thanks to the video🙏🙏🙏
This is probably the best instructional video I've ever followed. Very clear and fixed the fault! Thanks so much
I’m so shocked, I know nothing about any of this, but was able to figure out the issue with my straightener and fix it very inexpensively. Thank you so much for this video!
Legend. Thanks so much! Very happy wife and very happy bank account. £4.99 for a new thermal fuse was the only cost.
Great video, love that it’s “real”, no editing which helps as no steps or details are missed. The boy walking in and getting a mention is quality.
I fixed my wifes straighteners for less than a tenner for a set of thermal fuses off amazon saving her £100 if she had to buy a new ones, many thanks for this vid , your the man!
Thanks Pal. Mine didn't have a blown fuse but at least with your help I identified a poor connection with the cable! Much appreciated.
Great video mate. I was given a set of these from someone as they did not work. Tested the fuse as shown here, had blown, ordered new fuse form the UK which arrived today. Fitted it and off she goes. Great job. thank you.

Just wanted to say thank you, great video helped to replace a faulty thermal fuse everything working fine now
Can I just add, what a brilliant video this is! Many thanks for your guidance 👍🏼
Thank you. Saved buying a new pair of GHDs for the sake of a 50p resistor. :-)
Thanks making this video; just repaired my daughter's GHDs for £2.85!
Hope this kind of makes sense for anyone struggling like I did :)

thanks m8 this video helped me fix my daughters ghg 5.0 got the part on ebay the next day
Fantastic video, very well detailed. Thank you for making it. Congratulations.

Any advice replaced the thermal fuse. But the straighteners now turn on and they constantly bleep with a red light and don't heat up??
I’ve got the same problem. Did you manage to find a solution? Thanks
Great video helped me repair my partners hair straighnters and nice clear instructions cheers!
Thank you for this video!! I saved me from buying a new pair of ghds! X
i have a question xx please can you tell me if you would need to replace both thermal fuses or just one? thanks xxxxxxxxxx thank you so much xxxxx
does it fail because the component just went bad or is it another part causing it to fail? I ran a continuity test on the heater power and it was fine, is that the only test needed after replacing the part?
Thanks for your video.
Great video, can you go further if its not the fuse
Cool. Popped open. Tested fuse. Blown. Easy fix. Thanks.
How do you replace the wire ? I've opened mine and it has a switch like connector that fits into a frame inside ?
Hi there, do you have a link or some details about the fuse. Thank you

just use a continuity test setting on the fuse. don't bother measuring the ohm rating. from what you say, ur fuse is fine
I have replaced the cable, and the LED flashes randomly every now and then and there is no heat. Does that mean that the fuse is gone then?
Thanks...my mrs ghd's had the same fault... Thanks for helping me find it.
Fantastico, utilissimo, numero uno. Grazie infinite.
My ghd light constantly alarms any tips on this ?

thanx for sharing ,my ghd 4.2b doesnt have the same power lead connector as yours n i replaced my thermostate fuse but my ghd are still not working?
Hi. I have a mk5 ghd I have changed the thermal fuse and the thermistor but I’ll I get is a bleeping and the ghd button flashing. Thanks in advance
Can a ghd 6 be repaired. Does not get hot enough ,,,,
I just repaired my wife's Chi. The red wire cracked off the plug circuit board. I desoldered and resoldered it and saved $90.

i believe those small wires may be for temperature measurement
All the black has come off one of my plate on my ghds can I repair or get them replaced
My wife's ghds got dropped on holiday and kept losing power when the lead is turned to certain points. How do I fix this? Thanks
Also are these all the solutions for any ghd problems?
Is from gdh to ghd version different !
So... What if there is black scoring at the 9:36 mark? Trash it?

Thermal fuse checks out ok, getting 120 volts to the board, heating element has normal resistance, all components on the board look good, any idea what else it could be?
Tyler Finses without looking at it myself I couldn't say but if those parts check out could be a component failure on one of the boards.
How can i fix my straightener if the handing stand is broke but te wiring is okay . Can you help me i mean the broke part is under the metal plate
I bought ghd platinum white styler
Used only three times, then began whistling sound shows them with a red light, not heat, what's the problem and what should I do? Please tell me
Nina Nina i also have the same problem with my vintage pink platinum ghd :(
@channelengineer Couldn't you of testing the thermal fuse for continuity whilst it was still connected in the circuit to the pcb? or would it of given a false result
Does anyone know what ohm resistors r11 & r8 are on the 4.2b
Thanks
My straightener wire is flickering what is the faulty can you please tell me
Can you use any multimeter?
Alisha Hussain yes
Great video, fixed the wife's ghd' for £4.50 👍🏻
Hi mark
My ghd's model 5.0 aren't working and I think it's something to do with the fuse, would I be able to send you them to repair if possible please?
I just repaired mine bought fuse on eBay and abracadabra they work woohoo thanks for video
Elements volt it's DC or AC what's voltage..
What causes shiver mode?
Sir in my Anex haie straigthener there is one transistor BT225 which i cannot find anywhere in the market, kindly tell me its substitute
can you tell me the package type. I might be-able to narrow down the search.
what do if the strightner did not show any thing on screen and the screen light is on and some time it just show 180°C this problem start when I use it on wet hair one time by mistake plz help
great video but not sure how to attach the spring mechanism
Mine heats up a little then shuts off im suspecting its a bad thermal fuse
Can i send you mine to get fixed?
Thanks, I had the exact pair that have just developed the same fault. My video

how to chnage mosfed in iron plz help
Thankyou, so easy to follow
Hi
My mark 5's are not working I think it's the switch or board under the switch
Do you do repairs if they are sent to you
Many thanks
Hayley
If you send them on i can take a look
hi what to do if only one of the plates is heating up plz xx
Thankyou very helpful 🙏🏼
Hi my professional hair stratiner it leaks water when I use the steam
ghd platinum heats up beeps 3 times and cools down continuous 3 beep while cold
use a stubby Screw driver to hold one screw in place .
Only getting 30 ohms on one heater, will that make them none function, only get a beeping noise when turned on, no led light just a beeeeeeeeeep
HAI Uses thermal switch ceramic fuses to cut off
Hello, my wife's are making an fast electric clicking noise from the side without the switch. Could this be the main circuit board please?
Mark Rennie sounds like you could have a loose mains cable/connection, faulty switch or the mains suppression capacitor has failed. open them up and look for any black and scorched areas. had a similar problem.
had a look and nothing scorched, sounds like the noise is coming from the CARLI mpx40? is that a terminal please?
sounds like thats the faulty component and needs replacing. problem is usually this part is only sold with the board (pain in the ass). you can get replacement boards from www.ghdspares.co.uk.
