    I watch these on some very high end equipment. I own them all but I also grew up with the films. I remember the bootleg and shoddy vhs/dvd quality. I am super happy with what has been done with these sets amongst others. We definitely live in the best timeline for these releases. Regardless of flaws, these new editions are the best these films have ever looked.

      Have you had a chance to watch any of Shout volume 4 yet? I have noticed a real dip in picture quality, Rebel intruders looks color saturated, Sword stained with royal blood looks plain awful - shockingly bad.
      The 3 Tang Chia films fluctuate in picture quality - Opium and the kung fu master, I put on my dvd after and thought it was superior. Just wondering if you had noticed?

    Bells of Death is a good reason to get that first box. Fair choice picking that for the intro. ;)

    Thank you! This is the first video on UA-cam to do a comprehensive review on these sets. I want to buy one or two of these sets at some point, but here in Canada they're between $150-200 CAD even on Amazon.
    I wonder if there's any possibility that 88 films or Arrow will release and restore some of these films or if Shout is the one stop shop from now on.

      A few of the films included in various sets have versions from 88 Films. They came out six or seven years ago, though, so they aren't the best.

      @KingSigy I finally picked up Volume 1. To add to the small errors on the packaging, they list The Thundering Sword (1967) as approx. 195 minutes on its own case, which is wrong, and then on the box, it's listed as 95 minutes, which is also wrong, haha.

    Great work Peter! Thank you for the overview of these sets, I hope to pick up a few going forward. Super excited for set #4 as (in my opinion) that has the best movies on it!

    Nice overview of these sets. I just picked up a few of them on Shout’s website since they are having a sale on Martial Arts titles atm. The Ti Lung/David Chiang set was an absolute must buy for me since I just can’t get enough Chang Cheh in my life. Wish they had included a booklet with some essays and film info though

    Boy this younger generation complains about everything. I have everyone of these sets and the picture quality is beautiful on all of them. Some people don’t realize how awesome it is to have high quality physical media of these classic titles. Back in the 80’s the only way we could watch some of these titles were on terrible quality bootleg vhs tapes. I do agree that the art on the Ti Lung/David Chiang set is horrible but considering the quality titles it has its very worth the price to me.

      The picture is the same transfer(old) you see on iTunes and not new scans like you see on the Arrow boxsets. Those VHS days are over. No longer CRT’s in 240p. We are in the 4K era with current HD format’s.
      I’m not giving money for old transfers when is currently available on iTunes for $7.99 in HD. Instead of insisting that people don’t know what high quality physical media is just say you are satisfied with what you have because this channel does comparison on the technical stuff and I even showcase Laserdisc films here. We have seen better from these classic SB films from Arrow and Spectrum films.
      These sets are not bad but we knew something was up when Shout has been pumping these films out on a monthly basis. It shows they have the license for a short period of time. Because Arrow is taking their time with them.

      Films look great…your loss.

    • @TimesSqKungFU

      How is it my loss when I own these transfers for the fraction of the price for years. No one is saying these releases are bad just stating the quality of them when others done better(look at 8 Diagram Pole Fighter from 88 films Vs The Arrow release with a new scan). You are happy with them and that’s fine. Great looking boxsets and okay extras with the original audio, not a downmix which we didn’t get during the DVD era to a lot of these.

    I appreciate the in depth analysis of these sets. I think you nailed it; Shout acquired a ton of SB and put them out very fast which is a bit strange to me. I don’t know if the license required them to do so, or they’re trying to cash in since the Arrow sets have sold well etc. I am not well versed in the 60s era or Shaws. I probably seen a good amount of volume 3, and most of the David Chiang/Ti Lung set. I unfortunately do not own any of the Shout factory sets. It’s getting expensive to keep up with all the upcoming releases from Arrow, Eureka, etc. I am however happy that these films are finally getting more recognition and quality releases. I just hoped Shout would’ve gave more time in releasing them to catch up etc. Hopefully these sets are around for the foreseeable future so I could have time to acquiring them.

      I think you’ll be good with the Shaw Brothers Classics line. It’s really only the Brave Archer and Ti Lung/David Chiang sets that will potentially sell out.

    I am a huge fan of these sets, I didn't expect to love volume 1 as much as I do because that's not my favourite period.
    Out of all of them I found the David Chaing /Ti Lung box a real slog to get through, just didn't enjoy those films as much and yes ,the box art on that set is utter toilet.
    I contacted Shout to ask if we will see anymore next year ,sadly not ,so its up to someone else to take up the mantle.
    I think its Film Art (German label ) that have released a superb print of Avenging eagle ,which includes the missing footage (its only around 90 seconds ) spliced back in the film .I was lucky enough to get a copy .
    Excellent summary by the way mister .

    it's crazy how spoiled we have been the last two years with all the Shaw Brothers releases -- all my life most of these films have been locked away or import only! Something else that was annoying with the DVD authoring - I couldnt figure out how to turn on Subtitled during the Commentary track viewing!

    So if the films aren't remastered, should I bother with these sets since I already have a lot of the DVDs? I have no regrets buying the Shawscope sets from Arrow because the films look much better than the DVDs I own. This seems like a different scenario. I have the money but still, we're looking at maybe in the ballpark of $500 to replace all my DVDs with Blu rays.

    • @TimesSqKungFU
      @TimesSqKungFU  4 місяці тому +1

      I would only recommend upgrading on films you really care about. The Shout Blu-Ray's look good and have solid extra features, but if you don't really care for a majority of the films, it's not worth the money.

    • @TheYzeman
      @TheYzeman 4 місяці тому

      @@TimesSqKungFU yeah that’s the downside of these expensive sets and collections. Sometimes you only want 3 or 4 films out of 12. I’m definitely a quality over quantity guy these days. I really need to get a region free disc player so that I can buy some of those individual import discs.
