If you grew up in nyc in the 80’s, these films were constantly playing on Sunday’s on channel 5, so cool to know that’s what influenced him. Kids today will never know what it’s like to grow up on 7 channels and no cable.
the last few seconds RZA talking about his sampling techniques. That's where the gold is in this video. I'd love to hear more how we made his songs back in the early 90's (golden Wu Tang era)
When I was a kid growing up in LA in the late 70's early 80's we used to watch Kung Fu theater every Saturday right after Soul Train then go outside and try to emulate the moves we saw. Man....good times
I grew up in the 70s and 80s also, and I remember us going to the movies and watching Bruce Lee and other kung fu movies. My male cousins loved it and tried to emulate it and had many discussions about who was the best.
My grandad studied hung gar for around 24 years and actually taught me some, but then he sadly got sick and passed away at the beginning of this year. God rest his soul🙏🏽❤️
In Russia most of kids of my generatioin (80's & 90's) grew up with Shaw Brothers kung-fu movies. So hearing the legendary Wu-Tang Clan was so relatable! Keep the amazing music alive.
Little none fact to many around the country, is that during the 80's in the NY tri-state area ( NYC, NJ, CT ) Kung Fu movies where shown on local TV on Saturday afternoons. There was a generation of boys that grew up watching martial arts flicks in the 80's and you can hear the influence of the movies in early rap lyrics. The Wu -Tang Clan took it to a whole new level however and that is one of the reasons why the group resonated with a lot of NY, NJ males in the 90's so quickly. Also in Manhattan, during the same time period, the only type of movies you could watch in movie theaters, 24 hours a day, seven days a week were adult movies and Kung Fu movies. That's how popular martial arts movies were in NYC during that era.
Not just the tri state, my dad lived in Fla. and my mom in Cali... I seen them both during those time @ each of their homes. It got so ridiculous we use to were Kung fu gi’s everywhere!
Thank you for this comment. I didn't know this. I was wondering what made him and other wu tang members so interested in kung fu movies. And now i know why.
Not Just NYC this was Global Suhn in South African Townships in the late 80s early 90s someone who had a TV and VHS would bring it and the whole neighborhood would be in that house watching Kung-Fu movies, When Wu-Tang was known in the mid 90s everyone went krazy with that Shaolin Style Hip hop.
I could listen to RZA talk about anything. He’s got the most unique voice ever. It sounds like he swaps out various vowels , and his Rs and Ls are sometime’s like Ws, his “TH” sound is an “F” sound. Certain suffixes of words just drop off. I’ve never heard a voice like his. It’s amazing. It sounds awesome, especially being how insanely intelligent he is.

I'm late to the party, but I'm completely impressed that RZA know more about Kungfu movies than I do, and I watched these movies in the original language.
Not to mention he produced all of their debuts back in the 90's. Tical, Enter the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, Only Built for Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords, Ironman,
god you know that they all love these movies but rza knows the actors and characters names has seen them hundreds of times has dissected them both figuratively to find meaning and literally to reconstruct them into his own art. honestly so beautiful and inspiring i wish he had like a movie review channel lmao it’s obvious film is a second passion of his
RZA opened my eyes to so many martial arts movies through his and the rest of the clan music. We need a nice remastered version of Flying Guillotine,it’s been way too long since the non completed DVD dubbed version
JUst saw Marvel's Shang Chi recently and i can't hep but think how knowledgable RZA is in regards to Kung Fu & it's various fighting styles. It would have been nice for him to be involved in the production in some capacity, given his love, history & knowledge of ancient martial arts.

"You gotta imagine.. I'm a ten year old kid watching this yo, and I just seen a guy lay on a bed of nails... It was hard enough laying on my box spring. know what I mean?"
Wow this was an awesome interview I've seen little clips of Rza talking about his favorite kung fu movies but this was an excellent dive into the movies samples history I love this stuff could listen to him talking old kung fu flicks all day 😀
The sad thing is after Gordon Liu had a stroke and moved into hospital, his family and his assistant all took advantage of him, embezzled his money, the great master now is extremely skinny and weak. Let’s hope things get better for him.
That's horrible.
Wow really? That's awful
Shiiid if he is still alive that’s a blessing who knows maybe Man will wise up and be able to restore health back to normal post stroke!!!
Omg that's so disgusting, karma will get them
RZA should send him the statue weapon.
RZA has the coolest voice on earth. Could listen to him all day.
If you grew up in nyc in the 80’s, these films were constantly playing on Sunday’s on channel 5, so cool to know that’s what influenced him. Kids today will never know what it’s like to grow up on 7 channels and no cable.
This is the reason why Wu-Tang Clan is the best hip hop group ever
i dont know about being the best...but certainly the coolest!
@@bradpittiful7288 To you what are the best groups?
John Smith OutKast
@@peerce8364 The difference is the impact and wu tang has a lot of skilled rappers that are on the same or even higher than Andre 3000
John Smith Arguably ODB, other than that nah

Yea! Wu-Tang...cultural appropriation at its finest!
@@JR-kv6ez Wu-Tang clearly did their homework on the culture they were inspired by with this video.

WuTang is for the Children! 🤣✊🏾
This was great! RZA really knows his kung fu flicks lol
That’s an understatement.
the last few seconds RZA talking about his sampling techniques.
Kunfu movies were popping those times og
Yes, in NYC every Saturday morning was when we caught the flicks too.
Same here. I watched every Saturday back then.
Who’s ready for the new Wu-Tang series that starts tomorrow on Hulu?

In Russia most of kids of my generatioin (80's & 90's) grew up with Shaw Brothers kung-fu movies. So hearing the legendary Wu-Tang Clan was so relatable! Keep the amazing music alive.
same in poland !
And now i know why.
yup Saturdays and Sundays was Kung fu days... as kids put on your ninja slippers and sit close tv and watch )
In Philadelphia too, I would watch the kung fu flicks and NWA wrestling Saturday afternoons as a kid.
This is amazing. As a fan of martial arts films and rap music this is just pure enjoyment. Thanks RZA
The way you broke this down is amazing!
@@Sqwrl334 agreed...especially considering i was thinking something less eloquent prior to reading this comment.

I'm late to the party, but I'm completely impressed that RZA know more about Kungfu movies than I do, and I watched these movies in the original language.
In 1995 alone Rza produced; Only Built for Cuban Linx, Liquid Sword and Return to 36 Chambers the Dirty version.
If that's real that's a crazy legendary fact cuz niggas nowadays like Kanye stress having to produce multiple albums at once
Not to mention he produced all of their debuts back in the 90's.
Tical, Enter the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, Only Built for Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords, Ironman,
Nothing but classics.
Incredible…
And with some of the sampling challenges these OG producers faced, they were able to create timeless Hip-hop music. Salute to The Rza
This is the reason that the Asian delegation drafted the Wu-Tang Clan in the racial draft.
Such a solid pick.

This is dope! I hope everyone watches their show on Hulu
I have seen most of these films. RZA is a real OG Asian Martial Arts film fan.
wu tang joints are so fuckin hype everytime they come up on my spotify.
god you know that they all love these movies but rza knows the actors and characters names has seen them hundreds of times has dissected them both figuratively to find meaning and literally to reconstruct them into his own art. honestly so beautiful and inspiring i wish he had like a movie review channel lmao it’s obvious film is a second passion of his

I already had a mighty respect for WU and RZA but somehow he made me even more impressed
The amount of passion he has in really endearing
No joke, I'd listen to a full commentary by RZA on each of his favorite kung fu films.
JUst saw Marvel's Shang Chi recently and i can't hep but think how knowledgable RZA is in regards to Kung Fu & it's various fighting styles. It would have been nice for him to be involved in the production in some capacity, given his love, history & knowledge of ancient martial arts.
