Great review as usual. I think Sony is getting really close to nailing a great phone. You are right that the XZ3 should have been the phone released earlier this year, but at least Sony are aware of and have acknowledged their problems and shortcomings with their mobile division. And at least now they seem to be very quickly moving towards catching up and evolving their phones to both get back into the game and to actually compete against the other manufacturers. I also agree with you that the XZ3 may just be the best looking phone this year. Sony is also starting to nail the design aspect of their new phones (the old classic design was great, but out of date for the current tastes and market). I have had the Sony XZ Premium for a year and a half now and it's been a good phone. I want to upgrade soon and really like the XZ3..... cannot make up my mind if I should get the XZ3 or wait a bit longer and see what Sony releases next as I feel they are so damn close to nailing it in terms of making a truly great phone.

Should you go ahead with the XZ3 or wait for the XZ3 Premium. Well... if you're going to want a dual lens set up, and better low light shots, I'd say hold on for the Premium... however there are no guarantees of course as to whether or not we'll definitely get that- just my hunch. It's tricky, but as you say - Sony really seem to be on the up!
@@tech_edit Imho I think it may be for several reasons. One is definitely that Sony realises that their mobile division needs to be fixed.....especially in time for the coming 5G. The other is probably also due to the general turn around Sony is currently experiencing where they made record profits this past year and they have been kiling it with their high end tvs (check out their master class OLED TV if you want to the sexist TV you have ever seen. The entire screen vibrates to produce all the tvs audio), their mirrorless cameras, their noise canceling headphones, and Playstation. So I think they can now turn more of their attention and focus to turning around their mobile division. P. S. Check out the Sony Xperia Touch. It's a tablet pc that has no screen. Instead it produces a projected display onto any surface that responds to touch. It's a product that is way too ahead of its time for the mainstream/current market, but it's a damn cool piece of tech imho.
I will definitely check out the Xperia Touch. I certainly would love to have one of the OLED TVs. Incredible... I've only ever seen them demo'd in stores and at events like IFA etc - but wow..! Yes, I think you're spot on about the need to get everything firing on all cylinders ahead of 5G's arrival.
As a Sony fan I hope they get back on track. I want to see them do well in the mobile market. But one of the things they need to do that they still haven't done is release one flagship a year. It's crazy how they went from releasing two flagships a year (which is already crazy), to now THREE flagships in the past couple of years, with their numbered series and the Premium line. They need to fix this. People are less likely to buy expensive flagship phones if they know they'll be replaced in 6 months. If they want to grow their brand fixing this would really help. And I also wish they would offer a version of their phones without a glass back. I really want to get their new phones, but I won't buy a phone that's fragile. I'm just not going to spend so much on a product that can break even more easily. I know I'm also not alone. A lot of people won't get a phone with a glass back (same how a lot of us won't get one with a notch). If they did two versions of their flagships, one without wireless charging but with a polycarbonate or aluminum back, they could get a lot of people pissed off that so many flagships now have glass backs. They could get these customers. If they would just do these two things, and actually work with wireless providers in the US to finance and market their phones, then Sony could get big again like they used to be in the Sony Ericson days.
Agree - IFA in autumn should focus on flagships in compact (5"), normal (6") and Premium (6" 16:9) sizes. MWC in spring should focus on mid-range - i.e. XA3 - also in compact, normal and Ultra versions. Keep the design for a year and only update annually. I am also still waiting for a new Sony tablet - Z4 is still one of the best Android tablets but needs a replacement - 11" 4K OLED tablet with small bezels and 4 speakers would be nice... The other Sony departments seems to be doing great - PS4 is still great, OLED TV's are the best, new wireless headphones are fantastic and their Alpha mirrorless cameras are #1 in the full-frame marked...

I hate apple but their new 7nm chip is a worthy upgrade, the price for the same / similar rear sensor and 4gb ram make the xz3 pricey, should at least have the xz2 premium's dual camera. I guess this is why the grey market prices are £670 already for the sony.

One advice from a photographer, bro - when shooting against the light just put your hand above the camera and shade it. No optical system is great in fighting flares and that's the simplest thing you can do ;)

6:55 what happened to Xperia Actions in Xperia Assist? I'm not going to buy an X3 if they took out Xperia Actions. The Tasker app is too complicated to use for a replacement.
I actually have the XZ Premium and until the XZ3, I didn't see any Reason to upgrade to a new Sony phone. It's easily the sexiest phone released this year. And since my XZP is still running perfectly, I'll wait for the next Premium, this will be a beast.
And me too I have xz premium and still running very fast and expected xz3 I don't like the newest Sony phones but because I want something a lot more powerful for my next phone I'm gonna wait for the next xz3 premium phone

Why is the google pixel3 the only phones to not have the 3 icons (back, multitask and home) and instead just has the midle bar like iphones. Is that specific of googles phones or you can have the same interface in any phone with android pie????

I have both note 9 and xz3, xz3 display looks nicer, may not be as technically accurate, or as perfect a gamut as note 9, but no one looks at their screen through a display mate measuring scope. Xz3 looks nicer, it just does.

it's a great phone but i think 2018 is a year of experimentation for sony personally I will wait for the next premium device I can't help it i fell in love with the 4k screen of the xz premium great video overall

Awesome review, David; liked it even better than the one you did for Directmobiles! Glad to hear your thoughts on the phone, as there's been mixed reviews out for it so far. Most I've seen/read seem to agree it's a good phone, but still lags behind the competition. And here in the U.S., it's considerably overpriced compared to some other handsets you can choose. I'm especially glad to hear you didn't have any trouble with it only having 4 gigs of RAM. It's a puzzling decision on Sony's part, especially when you consider that they're going to be offering a 6 gig variant in certain Asian markets. Still going to hold off making a decision until we get final details on the other phones coming out this month. I'm especially interested in the new Pixel (non XL), so I'm hoping you get a chance to compare the two. My OnePlus 3T is still doing fine, so I'm in no rush, and I'm hoping if I wait until closer to the holidays the Sony will drop a little in price (if it's the one I decide to go with).

I've no idea why they do that - and why we get the lower ram models... very odd. And it was only recently brought to my attention that the US Sony prices are higher. I need to look into this. I remember that US Sony fans used to order their Sony phones from the UK and have them shipped over- and that was because the power button was also a fingerprint scanner, whereas on the US version it wasn't. Maybe it's worth considering doing now, just for the price difference? The USD is quite strong against the British pound, but there's always import tax to think about I suppose. Tricky. Btekt Late reply David, but I just placed an order for one of the 6 GB international models in that gorgeous Bordeaux Red color (neither option of which are available on the U.S. models). Was still undecided until I saw that the price on Amazon had dropped to $629 USD, brand new, which I believe is still cheaper than buying the U.S. version! Pricing was the only thing really holding me back, and now that they're going for this price, I thought it was finally time to pull the trigger. Really looking forward to getting this, as I've been intrigued by Sony phones for a long time.

Yes mate. I've had the device for weeks. It's not proper face Unlock. It just uses facial recognition algorithms rather than using hardware like the other manufacturers. And it doesn't work very well in comparison.
I love those cases too. And cant get them yet. And believe me I've tried. They will be available when the phone is. I shot that footage when I was at IFA in Berlin last month.
UPDATE!!! It seems it is called a Sony Style Cover - many to choose from - but slightly different to the ones I filmed at IFA. available from Sony store online! Turns out some are available at the checkout, but some still aren't available... Cheers Sam.
I'm thinking of getting a xz3. But the price of the XZ2 Premium is down on eBay so maybe I'll get that instead. The Oled panel looks so sexy though. What decision to make?
I'm worried that if people go for either the XZ2 Premium or the XZ3 - they'll regret not getting the XZ3 Premium!!! But.... If I had to choose between XZ2 Premium or XZ3 I would choose the latter, because I watch more content than I take pictures in low light.... Hope that helps pal!

Sony create world's first phone that can render the SDR videos to near HDR level quality.. Samshit can't do that.. Im not even thinking twice, even thinking one and a half times to buy this phone as soon as it release... As smart guy, i only wanted best wireless audio player with sony's HI- RES,cau'se we live in wireless ERA (2018).no.1 best display and xperience on multimedia. ONLY SONY WHO GOT THAT.
Great review bro. This is the best Sony has produced since the Sony Z Ultra all those years ago! The only thing missing to make the XZ3 near perfect, is adding a headphone jack, a bigger screen eg 6.5" display, and at least a 4000mah battery.

How do you not mention the HDR screen (HDR10, HGL & Dolby Vision), it's performance in displaying video, photos and menus, and especially NO mention or review of HLG-HDR video capable camera on the rear! This phone (along with XZ2) is the only phone with a camera capable of capturing HDR video for instant playback. It is the future of all cameras, and this phone has it built in!
Devil or even just buy usb c headphones.. I mean it has wireless charging now so the port is like the new audio jack basically the way I look at it bc I too hate wireless headsets
Nice review. Although, I think if you go to settings -> lock screen and security -> Smart Lock, you can find a Trusted Face feature, which is essentially face unlock. I only recently found this on my xz1.

Without a doubt, if you're into the Premium offerings, I'd recommend waiting for the XZ3 Premium - especially if you want a dual lens camera set up that's ace is in low light. In theory you could not wait, and go for the XZ3, but as soon as the Premium comes out, I have a feeling you may wish that you had waited. Hope that helps. I'll be at MWC in Barcelona and will hopefully film the XZ3 Premium there...

No mention of the AWOD? Granted there's more important features to a phone, but would have been nice to see it get some mention, as it's the first Sony phone to have AWOD as well as oled display. Nice review anyway, but I think I will stick with my XZ2 till at least next April, and see what the XZ4 will bring to the table.

I’m playstation fan and I love Sony. My TVs at home are a bit over five years old and still they’re awesome today. I own a iPhone 8 and looking at this for a upgrade. This phone is faster then the Apple latest iPhone line up.
using xz3 like for month. would give it 4/5 . some features doesnt work properly but its just a minor problem. camera isnt too good and if you play at your smartphone battery last for 6hour ..
I'm liking that comment because you're paying attention and really studying the results - that's great. Personally I thought that was a good effort there, and I don't have a problem with that blur. I suppose its all down to personal preferences and we each have different levels where we set the bar. I'll be doing some comparison videos soon, so I can show you how all of the different cameras from Sony, Samsung, Huawei and Apple stack up - that'll help explain where I'm coming from. What I meant there was how the background near the edge of your face was not blurred, which implies that the edge detection in the software was confused. It will be good to know in the future comparison if this is a common issue like how the flares interfered commonly. Anyway, thanks for the reply :)

I forgave it there to some extent partly because that was a particularly busy scene there to deal with. I've never had a 4K screen in my house before cause I feel like it's too expensive for a tv and hd is good enough but I might get this as a tester. Been waiting for this review.
That's a good question. I'm hoping to get a chance to do a battery test of alll the best 2018 flagships in one video, in less than 2 weeks from now. Just trying to work out how to film it so it isn't too boring to watch. But to answer your question, neither phone has any trouble getting through a full day. Beyond that though... sketchy.
Btekt Many reviewers daid that the battery life of this new sony xz3 is not super It achieves only around 7 hrs SOT on wifi. And 5 hrs on mobile data So it is not something spectacular. So can you tell us how much hrs can this phone give u on mobile data and brightness on 50% ?

That's a good point there. Both the S9 plus and XZ3 have seriously good sound. I need to play them both side by side to determine which I prefer - they're pretty close audio wise. Maybe that could be a future video... I'll play them both side by side. If I don't have time to film that, I'll let you know which I prefer and why.. Thanks for commenting!
Another update: Strategy Analytics (an independent company that tests to see if mobile phone screen claims are true) did a blind-test (so to speak) on which screen had the BEST display! 70% Of them chose the the SONY XZ3! tough choice. Personally I prefer the Sony. The pixel takes better pictures. But the Sony does pictures really well too. Much better screen on the Sony no notch. But then the pixel does have those swipe gestures.
Sexier than S9+? That's a bold statement. It's like a copy of S9+ with more bezel which aren't symmetrical too. No it's not better at all and S9 is already 7 months old and S10 is coming soon. Liked the Sony brand but after some Xperia's, I stopped buying it. Too expensive for what you get like HTC.
You're right, it is a bold statement - and although its only my personal opinion - I definitely prefer the curvier looks. Also I think the bezels annoy some people a lot more than me. I totally respect your opinion though - and there's no question that some previous Xperia phones have not represented great investments. Sony seem to be on the up again tough now. Also, you're right re HTC - some extremely competent and good-value phones from them right now. Not sure if you've seen my HTC content on here? I really rate them highly. Thanks for commenting!

That's a good question. For Sony's best ever camera (on a phone) I'd say the XZ2 Premium. For Sony's best ever display (on a phone) I'd say the XZ3. For the best of both, combined - wait for the XZ3 Premium! That will probably be unveiled at MWC in Barcelona at the end of February, based on how these things normally happen with Sony. I can't guarantee, just a hunch - but I hope it helps you out with the decision making process!

I still think the S9 is better looking but I've got to say I would love to get rid of touchwiz and swap it for stock android. Last Samsung I owned I had it running Cyanogen Mod and it was the best, but having knox tripped meant that Google Pay no longer worked which was a deal breaker for me as I use it for pretty much everything and these things worked on my Oneplus3t. If I could get around Google Pay issue I would get rid of touchwiz in a heartbeat.

One advice from a photographer, bro - when shooting against the light just put your hand above the camera and shade it. No optical system is great in fighting flares and that's the simplest thing you can do ;)

I actually have the XZ Premium and until the XZ3, I didn't see any Reason to upgrade to a new Sony phone. It's easily the sexiest phone released this year.
And since my XZP is still running perfectly, I'll wait for the next Premium, this will be a beast.

yep the XZ Premium is really no disappointment in performance even though it came out last year. Best phone I've ever had.

Why is the google pixel3 the only phones to not have the 3 icons (back, multitask and home) and instead just has the midle bar like iphones. Is that specific of googles phones or you can have the same interface in any phone with android pie????

I have both note 9 and xz3, xz3 display looks nicer, may not be as technically accurate, or as perfect a gamut as note 9, but no one looks at their screen through a display mate measuring scope. Xz3 looks nicer, it just does.

Glad to hear your thoughts on the phone, as there's been mixed reviews out for it so far. Most I've seen/read seem to agree it's a good phone, but still lags behind the competition. And here in the U.S., it's considerably overpriced compared to some other handsets you can choose. I'm especially glad to hear you didn't have any trouble with it only having 4 gigs of RAM. It's a puzzling decision on Sony's part, especially when you consider that they're going to be offering a 6 gig variant in certain Asian markets.
Still going to hold off making a decision until we get final details on the other phones coming out this month. I'm especially interested in the new Pixel (non XL), so I'm hoping you get a chance to compare the two. My OnePlus 3T is still doing fine, so I'm in no rush, and I'm hoping if I wait until closer to the holidays the Sony will drop a little in price (if it's the one I decide to go with).

I've no idea why they do that - and why we get the lower ram models... very odd. And it was only recently brought to my attention that the US Sony prices are higher. I need to look into this. I remember that US Sony fans used to order their Sony phones from the UK and have them shipped over- and that was because the power button was also a fingerprint scanner, whereas on the US version it wasn't. Maybe it's worth considering doing now, just for the price difference? The USD is quite strong against the British pound, but there's always import tax to think about I suppose. Tricky. Anyway thanks for the feedback again - see you here again soo I hope. Once you've made your decision do let me know!
Btekt Late reply David, but I just placed an order for one of the 6 GB international models in that gorgeous Bordeaux Red color (neither option of which are available on the U.S. models). Was still undecided until I saw that the price on Amazon had dropped to $629 USD, brand new, which I believe is still cheaper than buying the U.S. version! Pricing was the only thing really holding me back, and now that they're going for this price, I thought it was finally time to pull the trigger. Really looking forward to getting this, as I've been intrigued by Sony phones for a long time.

Yes mate. I've had the device for weeks. It's not proper face Unlock. It just uses facial recognition algorithms rather than using hardware like the other manufacturers. And it doesn't work very well in comparison.

Great review bro. This is the best Sony has produced since the Sony Z Ultra all those years ago! The only thing missing to make the XZ3 near perfect, is adding a headphone jack, a bigger screen eg 6.5" display, and at least a 4000mah battery.

How do you not mention the HDR screen (HDR10, HGL & Dolby Vision), it's performance in displaying video, photos and menus, and especially NO mention or review of HLG-HDR video capable camera on the rear! This phone (along with XZ2) is the only phone with a camera capable of capturing HDR video for instant playback. It is the future of all cameras, and this phone has it built in!

Nice review. Although, I think if you go to settings -> lock screen and security -> Smart Lock, you can find a Trusted Face feature, which is essentially face unlock. I only recently found this on my xz1.

Without a doubt, if you're into the Premium offerings, I'd recommend waiting for the XZ3 Premium - especially if you want a dual lens camera set up that's ace is in low light. In theory you could not wait, and go for the XZ3, but as soon as the Premium comes out, I have a feeling you may wish that you had waited. Hope that helps. I'll be at MWC in Barcelona and will hopefully film the XZ3 Premium there...

No mention of the AWOD? Granted there's more important features to a phone, but would have been nice to see it get some mention, as it's the first Sony phone to have AWOD as well as oled display.
Nice review anyway, but I think I will stick with my XZ2 till at least next April, and see what the XZ4 will bring to the table.

I’m playstation fan and I love Sony. My TVs at home are a bit over five years old and still they’re awesome today. I own a iPhone 8 and looking at this for a upgrade. This phone is faster then the Apple latest iPhone line up.

I'm liking that comment because you're paying attention and really studying the results - that's great. Personally I thought that was a good effort there, and I don't have a problem with that blur. I suppose its all down to personal preferences and we each have different levels where we set the bar. I'll be doing some comparison videos soon, so I can show you how all of the different cameras from Sony, Samsung, Huawei and Apple stack up - that'll help explain where I'm coming from. What I meant there was how the background near the edge of your face was not blurred, which implies that the edge detection in the software was confused. It will be good to know in the future comparison if this is a common issue like how the flares interfered commonly. Anyway, thanks for the reply :)

I forgave it there to some extent partly because that was a particularly busy scene there to deal with. How is the battery life compared to note 9?
That's a good question. I'm hoping to get a chance to do a battery test of alll the best 2018 flagships in one video, in less than 2 weeks from now. Just trying to work out how to film it so it isn't too boring to watch. But to answer your question, neither phone has any trouble getting through a full day. Beyond that though... sketchy.

That's a good point there. Both the S9 plus and XZ3 have seriously good sound. I need to play them both side by side to determine which I prefer - they're pretty close audio wise. Maybe that could be a future video... I'll play them both side by side. If I don't have time to film that, I'll let you know which I prefer and why.. Thanks for commenting!
Another update: Strategy Analytics (an independent company that tests to see if mobile phone screen claims are true) did a blind-test (so to speak) on which screen had the BEST display! 70% Of them chose the the SONY XZ3! tough choice. Personally I prefer the Sony. The pixel takes better pictures. But the Sony does pictures really well too. Much better screen on the Sony no notch. But then the pixel does have those swipe gestures.

You're right, it is a bold statement - and although its only my personal opinion - I definitely prefer the curvier looks. Also I think the bezels annoy some people a lot more than me. I totally respect your opinion though - and there's no question that some previous Xperia phones have not represented great investments. Sony seem to be on the up again tough now. Also, you're right re HTC - some extremely competent and good-value phones from them right now. Not sure if you've seen my HTC content on here? I really rate them highly.

The bezels to the XZ3 are symmetrical unlike the XZ2 you must be referring to.
It's uglier than s9+ for sure (how tf people find a phone "sexy" is beyond me)

Xz2premium or Xz3 which one is better?
That's a good question. For Sony's best ever camera (on a phone) I'd say the XZ2 Premium. For Sony's best ever display (on a phone) I'd say the XZ3. For the best of both, combined - wait for the XZ3 Premium! That will probably be unveiled at MWC in Barcelona at the end of February, based on how these things normally happen with Sony. I can't guarantee, just a hunch - but I hope it helps you out with the decision making process!

I still think the S9 is better looking but I've got to say I would love to get rid of touchwiz and swap it for stock android. Last Samsung I owned I had it running Cyanogen Mod and it was the best, but having knox tripped meant that Google Pay no longer worked which was a deal breaker for me as I use it for pretty much everything and these things worked on my Oneplus3t. If I could get around Google Pay issue I would get rid of touchwiz in a heartbeat.
