I love this concept of dry brushing over Contrast Paints. I’d love to see more in this series, as well as what you, as an experienced painter, can achieve with with contrast paint and drybrushing on flat panel vehicles. Nice work!
It always gives me more confidence to see a painter with paint on his hands. I'm serious. And thank you very much for this tutorial! I got a whole batch of these wonderful models to do and I think I'll use this style! ;D
😊👨🏼🎨We agree - what's a real painter without paints on his hands 😅 And you're so welcome! Very glad our content serves you as an inspiration! Thanks so much for the support
This is awesome man, I really like the combo of dry brushing and contrast paints for getting a really high quality tabletop standard across an entire army without needing to take an age on each individual model. I'd really like to see you do more stuff like this across a few different model ranges since they all seem to give me some kind of inspiration.
Cheers Patrick, we've got plenty on the list dude, I just have to learn each one, if it's something I haven't painted before. Most of the videos you see are the first or second time I've painted a scheme :)
Another great tutorial and inspiring as to what I'll do with the small number of Nighthaunts and looks simpler and quicker than the traditional way I see many use love to see more like it.
Wanted to pop back into this video and observe: this strategy works extremely well for painting a fully assembled Lady Olynder. Trying to conventionally wash shade Olynder is nearly impossible if she is completely together due to the chaotic spread of tendrils flowing behind the model. Entirely basing her in a dark color as seen here and then dry brushing upwards from there makes her far less of a pain.
Hi! Can I make a production suggestion / request? I think it might be an idea to provide, either at the start or very end of these brilliant tutorials, a more in-focus, steady and lit picture of the completed model? Or a turnaround? A lot of far less professional or capable tutorials do this and I really appreciate it. The mini-in-front-of-hand view is fine but I often fine it a little quick, wobbly and hard to make out. Just a thought. I get a lot from your tutorials, thanks so much for your time and hard work.
Absolutely my dude! We have more showcases in our recent videos, but it is absolutely something we are looking to get better at, and do more. A lot of the reason why is my ineptitude with technology, the new video editor is a professional photographer though, so there's some significant upgrades imminent!
@@robertbullen5769 Any time, buddy, quite a lot of the stuff that's changed in recent times comes about as a result of feedback or was at least sparked by comments (e.g. our 'glossary' lower thirds). We'll take it all!
Love this video! You are a great artist. Like the Nighthaunt colour concept and the painting technic. Please, show more Painting Videos of minis from the AoS!
Thanks for this video! I asked for a Nighthaunt drybrushing video and waited for it before painting my Nighthaunt Warcry warband. Now I know the technique...but I have mostly green and purple colours in mind so I'll try to find some colours that work. If you can, make a green and/or purple Nighthaunt painting video in the future :)
Yey! You're very welcome buddy! Your wishes - our command 😊 Thanks so much for the support and happy painting 🥰👨🏼🎨 Also, your suggestion is added to the list.
Thanks for the fantastic tutorial! I made a couple of slight changes (ratling grime for the metal and graves, rust, etc), but I'm super happy with how these came out. Do you know if there's a way to reverse this process for dreadscythe harridans? I primed mine white and I was hoping to use the same process, just inverted.
So I’m trying to achieve doomfire magenta flames that start out straight doomfire magenta and then fade to white. My fiancé helped me by adding a pallet and using a little bit of white. Like we slowly added more white to the different pools of magenta and got lighter and lighter shades. So right now I think I’m ok but I’d still like to know what you would do.
No worries man, I would prime the entire thing light grey, drybrush it white, and then just dilute more and more with medium toward the bottom, letting the white basecoat show through :)
I'm super happy to see this work on smaller model. I have the D brush set now and I have a question. When do you use the small one ? I really don't understand this one... In fact I use the Large and medium... But the two other are kind of not use. Can you show one use in a video ? Can you do one human minis also (like a barbarian) of the small size ? I really like your channel :)
Hi Kriss, you'll have an answer to this in the next couple of days! :) We're painting up indomnitus models currently, and it's almost exclusively using the small brushes, we're quite pleased with the result! We're getting a lot of flesh requests, once we've done power armour and robots it's on the short-list :)
IF you wanted to do this process in red what reds would you use? I gave it a try using your method it came out looking the same even when using differnent color reds. My goal was to try and make the physical top cloak look different from the ghostly bottom part.
It depends how disgusting you want to go, flesh tearers with a spot of purple and black in: blood :D Our upcoming bloodthirster in contrast should be a good representation of what can be done, you might want to use more medium than we do, though :)
Great tutorial. Have you covered off in your series about taking care of your dry brushes after use and why you use that little dipper thing (technical term 😁!!!)?
Once again another great vid idk what it is your video tutorials just blow me away and make want to get whatever model your painting there great also do you have a website or something where I can view your work ik your a company but still the work you do feels more like a UA-camrs work or something it's great.
You know! Just an idea, there are not very many different schemes on the Scarlett doom faction, nor the one with the metallic scheme. I think if you made a video like that, overtime it’s possible it would gain quite a bit of traction! I’m searching everywhere for one. I’m gonna settle on your advice though because so far- this scheme looks the best.
Very nice job. Definitely in my alley of doing things and my school of thought that you can get more than decent results without the need of very difficult techniques or tools. Outstanding. Subbed and I am sure I will have a mention of you in my channel!
I’m having an extremely hard time wrapping my head around this….can someone please explain how to do it with doom fire magenta, I’ve never done Nighthaunt before and just got a black coach
Hey dude, that's a different paint, and you've given no details of what you'd like to achieve. Let us know in another comment (not a reply to this, it'll get lost).
Hi there, I'd start from deep blue-purple like many of our tutorials, then transition through mephiston, troll slayer, fluorescent orange, then flash gits - into ice yellow from vallejo, adding fluorescent yellow to finish.:)
Do any of these tequnies help for doing metalic armour ,edit I mean drybrushing/stippling and stuff as a broad term not specifically this model but the use of contrasts reminded me of when I was attempting metallic armour

Hey, that came out great! Never used contrast paint myself and still not convinced by them but starting to re-consider, also, quick question, what colours would you use for dead (ish) skin if you were avoiding green, I have some battle servitors to paint and not sure how to do the skin bits on the head without going to a green ish tone as the rest of my colour scheme is super green heavy and I'm worried they will disappear a bit!
Blue and Purple works really good for a soft under tone for dead/corrupt looking skin. Start off with grey and go to lighter shades as you high light and use a soft glaze over it all to bring it together and add the dead look.
Artis Opus sweet! would be particularly interested in seeing this done with a dry brushing technique. I used your ghost wall video and did a motorcycle with it and it turned out absolutely incredible. Anyway that I could send you guys some pics?
That's a pretty nice model ya end up with there. Wondering, since ya like the fluorescent paints, if you'd be interested in trying to do something synthwave inspired? Seen a few people on reddit and in hobby groups looking to do something like it on their Necrons and I had a go a few years ago with this scheme i.imgur.com/tFaDjg6.png for a tournament. Although that's just an impcat pic, I'm too lazy to go grab mine.
Ive got a nighthaunt army coming in the post, received a box of your dry brushes already and I’m super excited to get stuck in with them 😊
