What I loved about this battle was it the was naval equivalent to hand to hand combat seen on the eastern front in WWII. Both sides fighting in desperation.
With the stakes in yamato being much higher than mere opression. This was the battle to decide the survival of the ENTIRE UNIVERSE. EDF and GDF where the ONLY forces able to hold their own for that long AND did in fact win. Gatlantis in the OG was NOTHING compared to this here. Stellaris would threat that as an endgame crisis to be shure. The fact that BOTH FLEETS suffered so heavy loses that the where SCARED that they could not recover at all without the Dimensional time fault say's it all. And later in 2205 it was obvious how weakened the EDF still was from that war. 2 mere Dreadnought refits AND Yamato made up an ENTIRE FLEET at this point. The Andromeda's and Ginga where pressed beyond everything to repair the solar system AND protect not only earth but also the now federation those 2 agreed uppon. If both would have recovered more then the attack on gamilon AND the evacuation would have ben waaay easier and better to handle.

In the new series, the new Ajax-class Autonomous Cruisers are showcased and seem to be effective had it not been Dezarium they were fighting against. Plus, later, it is shown that there are a dozen or more Asukas present in the EDF, which, admittedly, is because it's been years since 2202, but that's 6 years of building one of the most high-tech ships they have, and built dozens of them, pretty clear that they still have a strong naval industry.

My favorite part is the Gamilas flagship in the end that's still going with five of those kamikaze sword ships stuck in it. They knew what they were doing when they built those :D.
If you think about it, had they managed to develop some kind of AA system that was essentially the WW2 Bofors; faster than the 3-5 inchers while hitting harder than the Oerlikons, the Yamato would've been able to withstand the relentless aircraft and small drones that were thrown at it. The Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster exemplifies this weakness, as even the seemingly formidable rain of lasers wasn't enough to stop the Garmillan air wings from absolutely wrecking the Yamato.
I actually love this. This shows the Yamato is vulnerable and not some unstoppable Mary Sue ship. Why I loved this series as a kid and still love it today. You're right though.

I’m a little surprised that they didn’t kill off more crew members like they did in the original S2. I’m pretty sure only about 17 or 18 people survive in that version. (Spoilers ahead, but you’ve probably already watched this series) Most of the same crew members are killed off (Kato, Tokugawa, and Saito), but it seems like a much larger portion of the crew survives the battle. I guess part of that is due to the increased crew size in the remake to nearly 1000. The original had somewhere between 300-400.
hardly new tech. The dimensional Radar is the ONLY part that was new, but not standart for anything. Only ginga TO DATE carried that with her (as she was ment as an exploration vessel in the first place (oh and she is still able to fire type 3 shells, torpedo's AND her AA guns(without the cosmo reverse now she is able to utilize her shock cannons too). The rest? Nothing new. More AA guns (from ginga) as well as 2 more mean looking turrets as 2 where destroyed and needed replacement. The Transwarp(Yes, they call it that XD) she pulled against the desura II? Even that wasnt new at that point. Both forces experimented on that and this was the first in battle use of it.
