How to: Frequency Separation Retouching in Photoshop with Mixer Brush
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 жов 2019
- In today's video I will be sharing my process of using Frequency separation with the mixer brush in Photoshop for skin retouching.
A lot of pros dislike the use of Frequency Separation because they believe it is a destructive way of retouching but for a long time I have been using this technique together with Dodge and Burn and in this two part video, you will get to see the way I use them.
The term sounds very complex when when you understand how to use it, it's a very quick way to retouch portraits and in this video we get to see how I use it.

This has been one of the most comprehensive tutorials on frequency separation I've seen so far... And I've seen TONS of them. Thank you
+Bunmi Adefisayo thank you very much for this feedback and thanks a lot for watching!!
@@Phloshop Being a newbie to retouching, I noticed that it doesn't take away the pimples and skin pores and all those skin imperfections. It evens out the tones but not the texture. Am I doing something wrong?
Bunmi Adefisayo oh no.. what you’re doing is right. It means you didn’t heal the skin blemishes before using frequency separation.
I’ll recommend you watch this video of mine
ua-cam.com/video/Yrmp7tQSCjg/v-deo.html
And then come back to this to understand Frequency Separation better. And then let me know if you have any more issues.
Thanks a lot Joseph for the great tutorial! Keep pushing and God bless you!
My pleasure! God Bless us all
You have really ENLIGHTENED me. You made me UNDERSTAND photo editing.
Thank you for your feedback! I’m happy the video is helping
Good job Joseph. Very well explained!
+Courage Xah thanks a lot bro!

Thanks a lot bro!
Great, thanks boss!
+DICKSON DANNY Dedzah you’re welcome! Do you use frequency separation too?
Seriously sooooooo HELPFUL! the micro dodge and burn method alone was not possible with my schedule as a new mom. This has explained and helped me so much. Excited to watch the next suggested video :)
+Life Captured thank you very much so sending me this feedback and I really appreciate your kind words. I’m just happy to have been able to help you with this video.
And oh! Congratulations new mum 😊😊
@@Phloshop Thank you! unsure if you take photos and edit toddler shoots because that will be information I would need one day lol

New here I have always wanted to learn how to D&G Great work bless up
+Kwesi Blaqq-Ish glad you could join us.. the D&B video rather goes live later today.
So when you watch that please let me know what you think!
Good day, thanks for always sharing and inspiring.. my question is how do you know the right mixer brush settings to use for a particular image to be retouched cause have seen you used different mixer brush settings. sometimes your mix is at 15% times its at 50%. pls what's reason behind that. will appreciate a positive response. thanks
Thanks a lot Bro
+Michael Oluwole you’re welcome bro! Do you use frequency separation too??
thanks for this video. very educative. I kept to the old way of doing FS because everytime I wanted to learn how to use the mixer brush I left the "sample all layer" checked all the time so I stopped learning. haha
+Graffiti Studiosgh haha I’m glad this video has helped you. 🙌🏾🙌🏾
ive been using a mixer brush for frequency separation when i even out the skin ,that black and white layer is an eye opener ,i should update my own UA-cam tutorials with that in mind . thank you for this one bro keep up the good work
+Josh Muuo you’re welcome bro! There’s so many ways to do things in photoshop it’s so overwhelming. I’m glad you found something useful from this video.
@@Phloshop h
Well explained. Great technique even if I’m a D&B addict. Good job.
+Jean Joseph Napoleon thanks a lot. Which ever technique you’re used to is great especially if it works for you.
I’m releasing the D&B video on Saturday so I hope I’ll see you there?
Phloshop Looking forward to that video. Big uP.
+Jean Joseph Napoleon thanks a lot man! I appreciate it!

good work bro
Thanks a lot. Really appreciate it
Thanks. But why did you leave the high frequency layer? How to disappear the reddish of skin in some spots ?
please can i get your action for download? am actaully new on photoshop
I’m a newbee, i puchased your actions and I don’t know how, when and not to use majorities of the actions. Do you have a video of the exact thing you do to photos taken raw before brining it to Ps. Most especially If you use LR? Also, can we use FS on a non make up face of a model? Most especially men, i noticed all of the videos i have watched is with makeup faces. If no, then how do we edit and retouch a non make up face of a model(male or female) thank you. I hope you can reply and help me with answers.
Thank you very much for this amazing video.
One question though, your frequency separation action, how did you create the 'brush' layer in the middle?
+Mary Alabi you’re welcome 😊.
Uhm the brush layer is just a normal blank layer. So if u have an action for FS, after u run it simply create a new blank layer n place it in between the High n Low layers
Phloshop Thank you ✨✨
what is the use of the Layer between Low & High?
Please how can I get your action you are using in video...
Helle thanks for that tutorial, how do you do to create new layer with not transparency apparence
+Gradian PictureSTT you’re welcome and thanks for watching. I don’t quite understand the question though.. do you mean how do I create an empty/transparent layer?
Could we get your fS action .cause I find you teaching nice and very interesting .
+cleret fernandes I’m working on all of those... I’ll release them soon
Thanks Phlo. But how do we get the frequency separation action ?
+TRENDZ TV working on it. Should be released soon
hi im a professional photographer thanks alot for this efforts i like learning have downloaded the video and would watch and learn i would have loved if the video had started from how you process your raw file from capture one then to photoshop and also how you heal the skin before you run the FS action...i might start doing your style so i would want to learn it and give you credit for it..thanks once again
+APT MEdia oh that’s great!!! Here is a link to a complete retouching video I made.
ua-cam.com/video/Yrmp7tQSCjg/v-deo.html
Let me know if this answers some of your questions. Thank you!!
How do I delete layers
and also would like to know
how you;
color grade
sharpen your image
whiten the eyes
etc
+APT MEdia I have different videos covering some of these. Nowadays I don’t really whiten eyes but maybe I’ll show this in a video soon.
Phloshoppppppppppppppppppppppp👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 All I do is shooting, Bruh. There’s someone responsible for editing. Though I’m getting there
+JustDavidMinistries Hahahaha thanks a lot bro! Do you use frequency separation too? Is it a similar process?
Phloshop Now don’t be disappointed, Bruh. I am just hearing this frequency of a thing for the first time😂😂 Learning from afar☺️
+JustDavidMinistries hahaha it’s fine. The most important thing is that you know now.
But what technique were u using before?
Link for action ???
Can you do a tutorial on how to create the frequency separation
+YoungKen _LakeHouse studio I’ll try to include it in my next tutorial
I don't even have the option to hit "play" on my actions. My play option is grayed out
What about just duplicating the low layer and put on a blur, then using a mask just paint white on the area that needs it?
+Tristan Wilhelm hmm that’s seems interesting! Is that a technique you use? I’ll have to test it out..
Thank you!!
Please, why adding that noise layer? Is it to sharpening it or what? I don't get it. Thanks for your response in advance.
The noise layer is just to make it look more organic in my opinion. It’s just something I like to do. You don’t have to do it
@@Phloshop Got you. Thanks!

I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I tried this method and for some strange reason when I use the brush to smoothen the rough shadows it's coming out light and the entire skin flat. What i noticed is that when i start passing the brush on the skin the icon on the top left (the white square) I'm seeing a brown circle in the middle of mines but I'm not seeing that with yours.... Please help me understand what is wrong.

@@Phloshop Where's the link to the 8 and 16 bit actions? Sorry, but I don't know how to get to your pin. Thanks for the great tutorial. Greetings, Nick.
Link for action
+Kwesi Blaqq-Ish I’ve pinned it in the comment
Your video is very small window so your details shown are not visible easily .can you zoom the picture or enlarge it's form
try to add the raw image ohk
+Lester Afutu okay
why are you doing all this when you have the retouching panel. i do mine myself like you with my own process but many professionals i look up to use the panel.
+DIRTBAGDOM not everyone has access to the panels. Plus it’s the same thing. The panel just keeps the actions in their own “container” whereas actions are just stored in the app itself
Your video is very small window so your details shown are not visible easily .can you zoom the picture or enlarge it's form
+cleret fernandes I’ll be sure to pay more attention next time.
Thanks
@@Phloshop I used to always wonder why the magazine covers had these strange blow up , I kind of though it's the make up ...now it's so clear the art is fantastic in your guidelines tutorials
