I've been an F&I manager for 20 years in the Northeast. Larry is right about the coatings offered in the Dealership. Most prep departments just wing it with no preparation for the application whatsoever and just want it out of the bay ASAP. He's also right about the tire & wheel coverage especially on high line stuff. The most utilized would be the service contract (extended warranty) we have 2 claims in the shop right now totaling 15 grand. Obviously there's variables but stick with those 2 and do your coatings at a professional shop. These cars come straight fun the factory with plenty of defects. No prep & straight to the professionals for paint correction and coatings.

Hi Larry ! I started my journey as a detailer a while back. I work at a Mazda and Volvo dealership in France.
I find it sad that dealerships sometimes do some shady preps, but I guess that’s not really a surprise.
The thing with the dealership I work at is that, since it’s a small dealership, the sales department really lets me take the time I need/want to work on a car.
I suppose no dealership is identical to another one, but as someone who loves my job and detailing in general, it really bums me out to hear and see what some would do just to get cars out the door.
Anyhow, thank you very much for all the tips I learned from you years before I got that job, you’re an inspiration ❤️

Wish I knew this a few years back when I bought my brand new truck. As a detailer, I should have known but it was my first time ever buying new and thought that the dealer would "take care" of everything. Not a chance. When I went to pick up the truck, they hadn't even washed it. It was filthy. So, as a detailer, the first thing I did when I got it home was a very detailed exterior wash. Well, when I was finished, I was shocked. Multiple deep scratches, multiple areas where there were almost like small pebbles right in the paint, I had purchased the one-time application of life time undercoating and they oversprayed over the entire paint surface, I had 3 paint blemishes called snowballs ( where the paint is a very hazy, white color which was very noticeable on this deep cherry Ram 1500), it had a large banada strip on the hood where it looked like a different color, I'm aassuming someone wiped it before it cured? And, I had a spot on the hood about 2-3" long where it got damaged and removed paint right down to the metal. Now, when I noticed all this I contacted the dealer and they said they'd replace the vehicle, so I looked at 3 other trucks they had there ( same year, make, model and color) and they ALL had the same issues. It took some fighting but they returned my old truck that I traded in, I handed them the keys to the "new" truck that, as they advised me, had to be returned to have hood replaced, rear bumper replaced ( due to the sever staining from the overspray of the undercoating process) and have it completely repainted, which we know won't happen. They put it right back on the lot after a wash and a heavy coat of wax to "hide" a lot of the imperfections. I now know to do a very detailed inspection of the entire vehicle next time.

This is well presented! When we got our new Mini I remembered your F80 M3 video from years ago . I asked the dealer not to prep it and don’t remove the plastic in/out. I spoke to my detailer a few days before and came up with a game plan. Drove straight from the dealer to his shop and let him do the prep and any dent removal(none luckily) it was cool because all the shipping and factory paperwork was still with the car and I kept
The dealer actually refunded me 350$ on delivery in cheque as they didn’t have to prep it. The salesman said “I wouldn’t want my car prepped here too”

Great car choices for the demo. Do you adjust your pressure washer PSI for various paint or age scenarios? For example, the new Porsche paint and clear chemistry is much newer and very different vs. the vintage MB single stage paint. I'm wondering if that matters when working with a pressure washer.

    love Reflex Pro.
The thing about ppf is that it's a strong bond and can melt and warp baking in the sun then it cools and may pull paint off when removing if left on for more than 2 to 3 yrs so you'd have to remove and replace it often that's too expensive to ppf a whole car. just do the areas most effected polish n coat the rest. it's cheaper to fix rock chips n scratches than it is to replace film. makes no sense but it does work so 🤔 more people should ppf the headlights but then I wouldn't be restoring them as much lol
awesome videos as always Larry 💪

Hello Larry, let's say after you remove the plastic yourself at the dealership you notice how dirty vehicle is from transit (probably the train yard). Would the dealership actually let you wash the vehicle there in one of their bays, I'm really curious about that? Trying to inspect a dirty vehicle for imperfections, you might miss something if it is not cleaned. Also when I have bought vehicles, dealerships always tell me they have to do a road test and drive your vehice, how true is that and to what extent do they have to drive it?

    • @AMMO-NYC

Hello, yes my suggestion was to inspect it at the dealership. As you can see in the video, we peeled off the plastic in the dealership bay. This way there’s no surprises when you take it home.

I think there was an editing error at 22:18. You cut out the step where you actually apply the ceramic coating.

I was interested in a car and the dealer called me and told me they got the car in that day. Told them not to wash it cause I wanted to inspect the paint…The guy told me “Have a good day sir we’ll call the next on the list” Like are you serious? I found out the next guy bought it 14k over MSRP too. I really hate having to deal with dealers.

When I picked up my car, I insisted they don't remove the plastic. They looked at me like I spoke Egyptian to them. But they left the plastic on.

You can't really tell that the car has a wax, coating or other protection on it just by hitting it with wather. A fresh paintjob is known to be hidrofobique in it's nature. What do you do in that situation?

I mean realistically it's possible to do everything he said in like 1 out 20 times. They may even forget to not to touch the car (remove protection film, wash etc) because the car is already sold and they move on to next customer. Also, it may work on cars 100K+ but Honda civics, I don't think so.

    My worst witnessing:
Sat in my car outside a dealership waiting for a friend.
3 new cars were dropped off outside the dealer.
A grease monkey stripped the protective covers and washed all 3 cars with a half full 10L bucket and gritty sponge.
    It was painfull to watch.

Hmm I think a good inspection is valuable regardless of the status of car. On average, a car is most people’s 2nd most expensive purchase. Food for thought. Thx for watching!

  • @OnTrackDetailing

The best advice is always tell the dealer to do no prep and hand straight over to your detailer.
The biggest scam is the dealer applied paint protection...they charge you £500 and do literally nothing, or apply a sealant that is gone by the first wash...
Never let the dealer wash it and it could save you hundreds in £$ in less time polishing and restoring the car.
